pete wrote:No need for it to be tiered like that. Just time for points on your license and after a certain number of points you get a time out from driving. Even scale it so 80-100 1pt 100-120 2 pts over 120 3 pts and 3 pts being 3 month ban and the points staying for a year. If you go to 4 pts in a year 6 month ban from driving etc.

Then that driving will stop cause those ppl not gonna want to hire someone to drive them around or travel.

This will be much more effective... but I still think they should raise de fowlf****ng limit man.

Or we could raise the limit to something more reasonable?

Raise the limit?
Like you guys didn't get the memo about how any car traveling 83 KPH and over is a force of death and destruction? Only murder/manslaughter/mayhem can result if the speed limit is raised.

Stop bringing in cars that can cross 80km.....problem solved stop bringing in new cars with better safety features than those of the 50s and 60s when some of these laws were written.

Do cars in first world countries with enforced speed limits not have the ability to cross it ?

There was talk in the EU a few years ago about putting speed limiters on cars. The idea was to track either road signs or use GPS to let the car know what the speed limit is and not let the car cross it in that zone.

Haven't heard anything since.

Speed guns in effect in Trinidad & Tobago

SR wrote:Are first world countries speed limits this slow on the highway??

The mistake people make is thinking that the maximum speed limit on first world roads (interstates etc) should be equivalent to our maximum speed limit. Truth is that our highway isn't the equivalent of their roads which carry maximum speed limits. If you compare like with like (type of road) our limits are very similar and when lower not substantially. In other words a two lane road with on and off ramps every 5 mins or less (north/south highway) is not going to have a very high speed limit even in other parts of the world.
I won't even comment on the east-west 'highway' with all its traffic lights and extreme alignments.
I'm just saying don't think their maximum speed limit should be our highway limit when you're comparing roads with more lanes, less frequent ramps/intersections etc.
my 2 cents

Lets compare with third world countries then ...

Almost every other country with our level of development or less has faster speed limits on their highways.

Examples ?

Jamaica -max 80
Barbados -max 80
Singapore- max 90
Japan- max 100
Canada max 120(multi-lane) 2lane highways and outiside cities and towns 80

I threw in a couple first world countries just to compare.

Puerto Rico
65mph on highways (trucks 55mph) 104kph
Undivided roads - 55mph 88kph
Residential Areas - 35mph 48kph

Honestly some areas I could see 100 being ok. Once the on/off ramps are long enough that most cars can easily get up to the highway speed to merge then fine. But if cars struggle to get up to 60kph to merge onto the highway and meet cars doing 100 it's too much of a speed differential.

Fellahs we could debate till ah solar flare fry all the sattelites and kill we internet it wouldn't help one bit, if the decision-makers in office don't care enough to seriously review the current traffic laws.

If the current and past administrations used to carry out proper maintenance of the highways, then, perhaps, they could have proper technical justification for increasing the speed limit to around 100km/h.

But no one cares about maintenance. It is not as glamorous as Kamala using a big fancy scissors to cut ribbon for highways that go nowhere and buildings that are only shells.

So you all should really just end this thread, because with our, general, third world mentality, the maintenance of the road network in T&T is not going to get better anytime soon. Just deal with the 80km/h speed limit because that is what is safest given our local conditions.

I hear they looking to move Hinds as Minister of MOWT and put Imbert there. Hinds not doing a damn thing. They just have to find a new person to accept the post of Minister in the the MOF.

Well since folks would say Caribbean islands have backward laws just like us .... I widened the group. Also stated that in the post. But carry on.
I've just been looking for these countries with roads like ours and these lovely speed limits that people are craving for.

You forgot to mention these
Martinique 90 to 110
Guadeloupe 110
Cuba 100
DR 100
Guyana 100
French Guiana 90

Even some of the freaking poorest countries in the world have faster speed limits than us like Ethiopia, Niger and Guinea.

"Your Government working for you"
This is exactly how I felt this morning when a Gov convoy assisted me in getting home faster.

PCM 1 Merc S class with escort (Police car and two large black SUV's with blue strobe lights, the strobe lights of champions!) driving at 110 KPH. Met them at Macoya and tucked behind them, ran every red light with them to Grand Bazaar with some good measure of weaving to avoid cars that pulled on the side or slowed down to allow us to pass.

Anyone know who PCM 1 Merc S class is? Would love to thank them in writing for shaving off a good few minutes off the Sunday morning market run.

Count your blessings. I have a partner that tried this with the Amalgamated Prisoner Transport vehicles on the highway..drove for about 30 seconds and the next thing he knew there a pump action barrel a few feet away from his windscreen..bummy like that, big man cut across to the extreme left and humbled himself at 60km/h for the rest of the way.

Yeah know someone as well who got pull over and given a ticket for doing this with prison transport. But have never heard it happening with politician vehicles when people have tried.

I have even refused to move on the highway when the last admin was trying to roll over people's vehicles with their black prado's with blue lights and police escort. They eventually got frustrated and tried to push the guy on the left lane off the highway. They did give me a murderous glare tho ...

how bizarre, I thought this sort of behavior was voted out? worse yet, during a time when the general public is reminded that we don't have roads engineered for those kind of deadly speeds :o
