eh....no need for laws here. personal responsibility. and get a gate from a certified vendor from a known provider, and with a contract in place for repairs/maintenance. who are the people installing this? fly by night people? local vendors of global firms?

and doh let yuh lil toddlers play near it and stay inside de house liming wit yuh hub/wife, partners, brudder, sister..

it's always sad when a person dies like dis. but then i must say i doh see the owners largely as de innocent victims here.

Price is king. Even with laws and legislation in place there will be no adherence without enforcement. We have the knowledge, expertise and skills needed to build proper gates locally but everybody want to save a few dollars here and there.

Another

That looks like a specialized piece of farm equipment for cattle.

I think the OP created this thread to cater for those sliding gates which a large number of households utilize.

This .

Get inspectors out to start issuing fines for breaches of building codes.....as an on going monitoring system.

including gates etc...

I does the family have recourse against the owners????
The location was not properly secured.

Common sense would tell you to put a steel pillar or two in front of the gate so that if it indeed falls it'd not land on some unlucky soul.

This ALL boils down to our BUILDING CODES which are Way OUTDATED.
There has never been a serious concern to have them UPDATED to international Standards so , until then we will still see people building make shift "Huts" , welding fences and handrails on the side of the road and so forth.

Anyone knows of a actual international standard for gates? Or at least a first world country building code? Interested in finding where exactly we fall short.

Just an example, but you must understand there are in fact guidelines for constructing and Erecting such........... its just that we do NOT follow safety issues locally.

Man crushed to death by falling gate

Published on Apr 23, 2016, 11:00 pm AST

A simple man with great potential.
That was how 25-year-old Darren Mangalsingh was described by his family yesterday.
Mangalsingh, a process operator at Industrial Plant Services Ltd (IPSL) in Point Lisas, died at the San Fernando General Hospital after a steel gate fell on him on Friday.
The incident occurred at his family’s St Joseph Village, San Fernando, home around 10 a.m.
Police said Mangalsingh was holding an umbrella and opening the front gate when it fell, pinning him to the ground.
He remained under the gate for almost 20 minutes.
Two workers, Ravi Balkaran and Jason Samaroo, found Mangalsingh and removed the gate. But he was unconscious.
He was taken to hospital by an Emergency Medical Services ambulance where he died while being treated.
His father, Vishnu Mangalsingh, returned from the United States on Friday night.
He said: “My son was opening the gate manually while holding an umbrella and it fell on him. Darren was a simple child with great potential.
“He had everything going for him. He went to work, came home and played video games, go out with friends and come back. He bought his own car, a BMW, and was on the road to achieve perfection.”
Mangalsingh said his last of three sons was the child any parent would crave to have.
“When the gate fell my two older sons came to assist him, doing CPR. But help came too late,” he said.
Mangalsingh’s elder brother, Dalelan, said they were both working on a specialty line of GPS tracking units for cars.
“He was the product champion for this. He was a loving, caring person and never said no to anyone,” he said.
Investigators have classified Mangalsingh’s death as accidental.
An autopsy performed at the San Fernando mortuary confirmed that he died as a result of chest asphyxiation.
Mangalsingh’s body will be cremated at the Shore of Peace cremation site, following a funeral service on Wednesday.

Indeed. Both of his brothers are longtime tuners.

Darren was a good kid. Always enthusiastic, kind and willing to help others.

He will definitely be missed.

I hope people will actually review and comment on the proposed national specification for driveway gates.

people want a pretty gate , plenty of people feel that if they could join two piece of metal togetether with some Birds#*t welding and then grind it an make it look good then it qualifies them as a welder or fabricator and dey cud build anything , but the reality is that we have a bunch of Quacks who doing all kinds of crazy shite and killing innocent people , it seems as though the main criteria for a sliding gate is " it does move real smooth , or it does open easy " no consideration given about stress and strain, wear and tear , maintenance etc , how many more innocent people must die before the government agencies do something about this !

is there a need for building code revisions? ent each manufacturer have set specs?

there's only so much that govt. can do, people need to buy from reputable firms, or start firms that have contracts/training and proof of such.

one issue imho is friend friend ting, who does buy in gate from overseas, but who ent really know what s/he doing. nobody should really die from dis, of course, but then only so much PNM or UNC in power can do.

Some people have their pedestrian gates in the centre of their sliding gate... the children have to come into contact with the gate sometimes

These gates are so heavy they can take out adults as well, its not only about kids - its about safety in general

most of these stories are about children left unattended, and not adult chilrren but small like three years old. it's a tragedy when anybody dies or get injured from it. but then parents need to tek responsibility too.

I could be passing through a gate holding My child and it falls and injures me and kills my child - does that make me irresponsible?

Or should we just use good sense and introduce some blasted standards that we ENFORCE so this does not happen to man/woman/child/pothound again???

pretty comprehensive doc with good illustrations
doc recommends the vertical bars on a gate to be 2" apart
