Not your Parents’ Carnival ~ Times change, and Carnival Changes with it — For Better or For Worse?

Look at photographs from the Carnival parade fifty years ago, and there are things that don’t seem to have changed much: the layout of the main stage at the Queen’s Park Savannah, the joy and abandon of the masqueraders in their spotlight moment, the advertising hoardings in the background.

But there’s much that’s obviously different in those archival images: the design of the costumes, the scale and organisation of the bands, even the gender of the masqueraders — women nowadays dominate most mas bands, by a wide margin.

And there are more profound differences that photos can’t capture, in the logistics and economics of the festival.

Carnival is a season of creativity and commercialism that dominates the first two months of every year in T&T.

But it’s also — and always has been — a kind of battleground for certain social ideas, for notions of cultural identity.

Over the two centuries in which the twin islands have evolved from colonies into a postcolonial nation, Carnival has evolved too

Sadly true, I stopped taking my kids to the Savannah when I couldn't explain some of the things big supposedly mature people were doing in front of them.

Local Richard Solis ~ Solman

In celebration and thanks for the year behind, and the year to come

I offer you all this song, which has a very special place in my heart.

Thank you all for journeying with me this far, and for all of the humbling support.

It is such an honour and privilege to be able to share with all of you sacred children of the universe.

Love and Blessings.

Child of the universe

Oh the beauty, the majesty the mystery of the stars.
You only have to look.

Look with the tenderness of your heart, and remember
How sacred the universe of which you are a part.

How sacred you are

Carnival People of Trinidad and Tobago

When their legendary father, Edwin, died just under two years ago, it fell unto Chanel Pouchet to carry on his legacy.

With the guidance of her mother Christine, the eldest of three daughters, assumed the captaincy of the PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, at the same time mentoring her youngest sister, Erin (left)

Chanel, who plays the guitar pan, is a hands on captain, as the sisters in the panyard painting the steel drums, while players were in practice mode as the band prepares for Panorama 2016, which officially kicks off this weekend.

But she was shy when we turned the cameras on her, pointing to the players who paint and clean their instruments as the band prepares for the big competition.

Silver Stars with her father’s composition and arrangement took the 2009 and 2010 Panorama titles

Shrugging her shoulders, as if its no big deal, Chanel recalled the days when her father and others did the backbreaking work to mix concrete and pave the panyard on Tragarete Road.

And noted that the year after her father died (2015) she painted ALL the drums and the racks, singlehandedly. No doubt it was therapy in her grief.

Liam Teague, handpicked by Pouchet before he died, will arranged his composition ‘Panoramic” sung by Sekon Sta for Carnival 2016.

They will face the first round of judging at the panyard on January 20th.

Local Roucou or Oucou

Roucou or Oucou, as some people call it, comes from the fruit of the Achiote (Bixa orellana) tree

Here in Trinidad we have two types, the usual red that most people know of and a green variety that doesn’t get red but dries after a while.

So if you are waiting for this kind to get red or ripe you will be waiting in vain haha!!!

This natural dye has long been used by Amerindians as a body paint.

Perhaps this is a remnant of our Amerindian heritage, mainly the Caribs, in our country who have been here long before Columbus, supposedly discovered Trinidad and Tobago.

But just as a side note, could you discover or rediscover a place and find people living there before you discovered it?

Hmmmm Just imagine that is what they taught us as “Caribbean History”. Anyhow where were we… Yes ..Roucou.

Roucou Used in Cooking ::

Roucou is now a mainstay in any trini kitchen and is used to add colour to our wonderful dishes, especially when we are making pastelle.

And who could forget Golden Ray Margarine, it also has roucou that gives it that signature red orange colour we all know.

I have been doing a little research online lately and saw that this plant also has a lot of medicinal uses, too many to mention here.

Some of these uses I do not know of so I will have to do some reading myself.

It’s good to read and expand the mind a little.

Before I go I’ve noticed something else.

The Tupi people’s word for Roucou is Urucu, don’t you find it almost sounds the same as roucou?

Well just something to get you thinking a bit

Local Pan Arranger ~ Jit Samaroo ~ R.I.P

It is with great sadness - the passing of Pan Legend Dr. Jit Samaroo at the age of 65 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Samaroo is synonymous with Renegades Steel Orchestra and has led the band to nine Panorama titles during.

Samaroo is the recipient of the Hummingbird Medal of Merit (Silver) and the Chaconia Medal(Silver) for his contribution to pan.

With Panorama 2016 - it is a sad time indeed to lose this cultural icon

Black Pudding

Made out of pig's blood, pork fat and oatmeal, black pudding might seem an unlikely candidate for the shelves of Britain's health food aisles.

But the breakfast staple, considered a delicacy in northwest England and the west Midlands, is the surprise inclusion on a list of superfoods to watch in 2016 produced by MuscleFood, a nutritional food retailer.

The crumbly blood sausage, traditionally served with hearty favourites like bacon and fried egg, contains high levels of protein, iron, calcium and zinc.

"2015 saw healthy eating reach a new level and this year we predict this trend is only going to get bigger," British media quoted Darren Beale of MuscleFood as saying.

"It's been interesting to note how people are changing their habits depending on the new buzz words in clean eating.

"Some of the foods have been on the up for a while like avocado oil and maca root, but others like mushrooms and black pudding have been a total surprise to us."

But some experts have already cast doubt on the claim.

The Institute of Food Research told The Independent newspaper that it tried to avoid using the term "superfood", instead advocating a balanced diet.

It also said that black pudding generally contained up to 20 percent fat and had relatively high levels of calories and salt.

Last year, the World Health Organisation warned that sausages, ham and other processed meats cause bowel cancer.

Local Hunting

Today we are enjoying the hunt after a 2 year moratorium.

A large percentage of hunters have lost their dogs in the 2 year of restriction - dog died, these hunters are now in the process of training dogs, and by the time these dogs are ready for hunting, the season would again be closed.

The people who benefited from the moratorium was the poacher, these are illegal hunters who hunted throughout the moratorium with no restriction, they haunted ,ate and sold wild animals to the supporting population, facilitated by many who have sworn to uphold the laws.

In this open season 2015, these poachers are receiving an additional benefit, in that their dogs did not die, because they had the required exercise, these dogs are now the most fit and experienced dogs making the poachers the most successful hunters.

From observation it appears that poaching favors those who indulge in it.

Should all bonafide hunters become poachers? Should we all engage in this illegal format because of the high benefit without sacrifice? We are all aware of the competence of the wildlife enforcement agency. Very few, if any of us would be caught.

Are you encouraged to join this deceitful, selfish, dishonest gang of wildlife thieves who are only concerned about themselves, who have no concern for wildlife survival.

Certainly Not.

You cannot afford to drag the noble traditional activity, hunting, which has its genesis in providing food for man into a shameless, degrading, mean and reckless activity.

We must stand as guardians of hunting, condemn the reckless poaching behaviors.
