WTK: HID idle problem

Postby NightShift » March 31st, 2015, 5:43 pm

Fellas i have a problem.. hope u guys can help me out..
Here goes..
I have an almera that came with the single bulb headlight..
I converted it to the double complete piece headlight.. got it wired over with relays to work with the dim only 2 bulbs lighting and bright all 4 lighting..
The problem is i installed HiDs both on the dim and bright..
Now when im using it and its on dim its works nice.
When i switch to bright.. the car idle drops very badly for about a second and idles normal again... it happens everytime i switch to bright..
Even when i give people lights on the road it does it.. and it cut off once i had to start back..
Please help!!

Upon initial start up of HID lights, there is a extreme power draw to get the lights to come on. However after it has warmed up to full intensity and temperature (after about a minute or so), it requires alot less power to operate. Less than standard halogen lights.
That power draw upon initial start up is what is causing your low idle.

If it is so low that the car feels as if it wants to cut off, you might want to check your battery.

check battery...clean up the terminals and connections on both ground and positive side.
replace frayed / damaged cables and terminals.....yes it makes a difference.

ensure alternator is giving proper output.

as BH said the starting draw current is what gives that drop in idle temporarily.

also what you need to know is the stock alternator is rated to give enough power for stock equipment - normal headlight, stereos etc. when you upgrade your lighting to HID or your stereo to aftermarket with amplifiers and such you will also need to upgrade your electrical - ie big 3 upgrade and larger alternator and battery.

failing to do this you will see a reduced lifespan of your alternator and battery. :!:

try the big 3 upgrade as suggested above, used to have this issue when I have AC on, radio on loud and I flash lights.

-clean your terminals with sand paper and where ever else the wire is groundin (engine block/trani/body of car)
-make clean alternator own as well
-make sure ur belts making proper contact
-Get a single battery/ground size wire from any parts place. Bolt one end on to the alternator and the next end to the POSITIVE battery terminal
-and make sure you have no live grounding wires grounding on the body or anything

Are you pulling power from the battery or the light circuit
I believe it is installed incorrectly

HID can only be installed one way. Not so?
Especially that H1 dual bulb headlamp in those Almeras.

if its set up to run with a relay ie. both beams on together, it needs a direct 12v from the battery to have a normally open switch

Glad u sort out.

Didn't think of that Aaron, as from my experience Almeras don't need relays to run HID lights.

Remember he changed from single h4 to a dual projector style so the h4 would have engaged each beam individually so u needed a relay for both separate. I actually have a harness selling that would allow dual h1 off a h4 adapter
