Help needed: Mould treatment and prevention

Postby Hyperion » January 15th, 2015, 3:23 pm

i have what appears to be a white mould problem in my home. I used vinegar but that was ineffective. i used a sodium hypochlorite spray and it seemed to work.

My concern is that the sodium hypochlorite spray smells very toxic, i had to use a gas mask, eye protection and gloves.

I need to know

1-how to prevent the mould from returning
2- is there an effective alternative to the sodium hypochlorite spray that is not as toxic?
3 - are there any local companies that deal with this? I couldn't find any in the directory

the white mould spreads real quick. It appeared a couple days after i painted my wall with a water based latex, maybe the moisture triggered an outbreak, but it is a health concern for me.

What strength/concentration did you use? Isn't sodium hypochlorite bleach?

I used Zinsser Jomax mold and mildew spray from FT Farfan, and yes the main ingredient is sodium hypochlorite.

The wall is not the smoothest finish, so it makes it a little more difficult to get rid of the mould

use 99% chlorine mix with water and spray the wall.

as for not returning you need to find out what is causing the moisture

If your house was built without plastic to prevent ground moisture, I know people use penetrating liquid to stop it. If not, you need to get rid of what's causing that humid condition for the growth.

Sherwin Williams primer contains anti-bacterial properties....and their Resilience (Blue Can) Exterior Acrylic Paint protects against moisture.

Another solution that you can try to clean the mold with is bleach and water (ratio 1:4) respectively.

Also Auto Work in Central has an anti-bacterial paint called Sovinil. Contact is 672-5322.

I was refereed to them by a chemical company when trying to find out about mold removal and prevention.

Hope this information helps.

describe the situation more tho
what is the room used for?

The best thing is to get a dehumidifier to lessen the humidity , and an air purifier to reduce the amount of spores.

my bedroom, i have a/c which i use at nights. i used a latex based water paint for the first time this Christmas, Pratt and Lambert Pro Hide Silver. Now I am noticing a white chalk like residue on the wall. I assume it is mould because a couple years ago I went away for a month and upon my return the apartment was musty and there was some mould on the wall.

However I was doing some more reading this evening and I came across "chalking", which has to do with paint residue.

well the AC acts as a dehumidifier, so humidity shudnt be too big a problem

Try spraying the wall with insect spray, worth a shot

are there any test kits i can use to test for mould in the air in my room? i found some old white jerseys in a cupboard with a musty smell with what looks like mould so i'l have to clean it. but i'm wondering if there is other areas i don't know about. for months i have some unknown health issues like these mentioned here that seems to fit mould sickness:

Fatigue and weakness.
Headache
light sensitivity.
Poor memory
Difficulty concentrating
Morning stiffness
Unusual skin sensations, tingling and numbness.
sinus congestion

also is there a way for me to test if i am in fact affected like a blood test or something?

White vinegar mixed 1:1 with hydrogen peroxide worked for me.

This works well
http://www.protectionplustt.com/product ... lean-plus/

it's a clear liquid that you spray on with a spray bottle and allowed to soak and then once dry you can paint over it. you should deal with the source of the problem first if there is moisture getting into the area from elsewhere.
