I took the electronic fuel injection course in 2011, at UWI open campus in Carapichaima and found it was worth it. I gave my views on this (Posted Sun. 22nd may 2011)
I am also doing the auto mechanics course at this same place but sadly it is not worth it and I do not recommend anyone to signup for it.
The class is 60 contact hours on Saturdays and I have 3 more classes left. It suppose to be from 9.00am to 1.00pm but usually starts just after 10.00am and stops after 1.00pm
Compared to the EFI course, this course has no practical .
The teacher , (Mr. Breton I think ) is a retired person who teaches the class
While he is old school , knows his stuff and gives good info and tips ,many times when he starts to teach he always goes off topic and talks about things not related to mechanics.
Unfortunately other students in the class encourages this.
You are provided with copies of two text book approx. $200.00 each ( if you want it ).
Most of the things talked about can be obtained from youtube.
I signed on for some practical experience eg replacing brake shoes, pads , bleeding , adjusting/ timing valves, replacing timing belts / chain etc . but their are none of these since according to him
" the school has no such things for we to work on "
For an auto shop class their are no engines or systems to practice these on , no special tools or even a 12v car battery.
If you need some practical this is not the course for you.
Sadly most of the students in the class are involved in the field, ie some work in mechanics shop or have their own garages and as most of them said " I just here for the certificate " and beg to write the exam now.
The topics covered so far are
1 Using measuring instruments Micro meter screw gauge and vernier caliper
we learn to use the micrometer but no calipers were available
2)Two and Four Stroke engine operation
we went through this in theory and he showed us inside a scrapped 2 stroke engine lying around
3)Ignition systems coil and timing
we did this with a model in class mounted on a ply board employing an ignition coil with a distributor with pionts and spark plugs. Timing was not covered.
Most of the explanation was theory.
4)Fuel system carburetion : we did not do this since he said this is no longer used in cars
5)Cooling systems : we went through its parts in theory and he talked about problems and solutions.
very informative
6)Lubrication system : we went through this in theory, talked mostly about oils and what the marking on the oil container means ie 5W20 etc.
7)Steering and alignment : we now started this
We still have topics to cover in 3 classes !!

Braking system service and repair
9) Cylinder head service and repair
10) Engine fitting: Main and big end bearings
Piston in cylinder and ring tolerances
11)Engine timing
12)Valve adjustments
13)troubleshooting
Don't know how these will be accomplished in 3 sessions. Will keep posted.
