K&N oil filter stuck

Postby COROLLA KID » May 21st, 2014, 1:09 pm

Let me calmly write this as I am about to throw a wrench through my windshield,
I was in the process of changing my oil and filter what suppose to be a quick DIY and then the gods said i must suffer.
I first tried to remove the filter with a socket wrench "which suppose to be the way according to K&N", which resulted in rounding off the hex nut Next I got out the vise-grips and proceeded to mangle the hex nut which didn't work. I then moved onto the screw driver. Not much luck there, as it is very difficult to really get any where in there with a hammer to punch a hole in the filter due to its recessed location, i tried WD40 and no luck there either...I used this type of filter before and it didn't give this much trouble to get out.....this sheit is very frustrating!

Anybody have any ideas other than suicide?

the engine is a B16a in a EG9 civic BTW

Pipe wrench held at an angle (smallest one that can still fit around the filter). .. filter is gonna look like a mangled wreck when it comes out. You will have to be under the car to do this though.
Also have a look at the different types of filter wrenches being sold and see if any can work in the limited space that's available.
Good luck on the filter removal
Had an ek4

You need one of these. No other filter wrench gonna help you there.

The pipe wrench is a good idea if you have the space.

Either a filterwrench like these guys say or some nitrile palm gloves and some serious force..ive been in this situation before with a friends navara amd my old ranger. This is what happens when you overtighten a filter on installation. Hope u get tru..

I eventually got it out , i couldn't find a wrench that would fit in the space so i tried and tried (4 hours) to loosen it with my hands and i came out..........my arm is still hurting, feels as if i have arthritis..lol.

Not me and K&N again back to the normal Fram cuz they got the SureGRIP feature, and not a hex nut like K&N that would fail...

 that is pain boy!

The sandpaper idea is killer, but as a plan-B, I have a very long flathead screwdriver that I use to pierce the filter from way up top the engine bay. It's hella messy, but you only need an eight of a turn or so anyway.

I have one of these too, but it's a bit big for my tiny L14476 filter, and slips like a mofo on the purolators, so if sandpaper fails, screwdriver IHMC

I just pour a bit of oil in the new filter to prime the filter medium and lube the rubber ring before installing...and try not to over-tighten it.

use a cloth in the tool to add some grip
