The sandpaper idea is killer, but as a plan-B, I have a very long flathead screwdriver that I use to pierce the filter from way up top the engine bay. It's hella messy, but you only need an eight of a turn or so anyway.
I have one of these too, but it's a bit big for my tiny L14476 filter, and slips like a mofo on the purolators, so if sandpaper fails, screwdriver IHMC
I just pour a bit of oil in the new filter to prime the filter medium and lube the rubber ring before installing...and try not to over-tighten it.
