When I was looking for a pickup earlier this year a heavy T permit was required, however I have since been told it was adjusted and know multiple persons that purchased and operate these on a class 3 permits.

That won't stop people from buying them. They will still be flying out of the showrooms like hot cakes. I fine they should increase it to $300,000. After all it's a Toyota....lol.

12,222 new cars bought in nine months

Many motorists consider the journey to work in gridlock traffic a nightmare. With the Transport Commissioner, Ruben Cato, estimating in 2010 there were about 600,000 vehicles on the nation’s roads, the question often asked is: how many more can the road network take? According to data obtained from the Central Bank of T&T (CBTT) for the first three quarters in 2013, the number of new cars purchased was 12,222. Compared to a similar period for 2012, 10,877 new cars were purchased. In other words, there has been a 12.37 per cent increase in new cars purchased for 2013 compared to 2012. (See table and graph)

A closer look at the data indicates a sharp increase in the purchase of new cars during October 2012: 1,471, compared to four months later—February 2013—when motorists bought 1,069 cars. The slump in the purchase of new cars represents a 27.33 per cent drop. Cato reported in 2012, the Licensing Authority registered 27,488 vehicles in total. Looking at a six-year trend, from January 2007 to 2013, he said, in total, 230,000 vehicles were registered at the Licensing Office. With the average motorist spending four hours daily in traffic. What is the effect of that on productivity? Vincent Cabrera, president-general of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers’ Union, said traffic would thicken if the volume of cars on the nation’s roads is increased. Cabrera said not many people would opt to leave their cars home and use public transportation. “Do you see what happens in some of these places to get transport every morning? It’s a ‘rush and grab’ to make sure you get transport, so when you reach to work in that state of mind, obviously, productivity is going to be affected.”

Meanwhile, economist Mary King said an increase in volume of cars on the roads may mean “people are a little more confident that next year is going to be good.” Transport Minister Stephen Cadiz said the increased volume of cars purchased means the public’s taste patterns are steering more toward owning a vehicle rather than using public transport. He said there is need to provide a more efficient transportation system. “We do have a transit meeting scheduled tomorrow (January 3) where we’ll get some experts to sit down and go through the issues in T&T. These are both local and foreign experts who have dabbled with T&T before to come up with a comprehensive transit plan. Cadiz said new things are coming for 2014 in the transportation sector. “We are going to be seeing the new Motor Vehicle Authority coming into parts of the old licensing regime by September 2014. It’s going to be a lot easier, for instance, to license a vehicle. It will change somewhat, the way we train our juvenile drivers and how to obtain a driver’s license.” Cadiz said the more time a motorist spends in traffic, the less productive they are at work. “Obviously, we have to do something about it. One of the solutions is, in addition to better road network, will be the use of public transport.”

Gridlock country, here we come!

Cadiz missed the point though. If everyone has a car, why would anyone take public transport? And on which road will this public transport use?
When last I checked, even the bus route has traffic and many vehicles with no visible PBR passes frequently use it.

Public transport is real sheit. Don't see that changing anytime soon. This is the main reason I bought a vehicle. A good start would be to get some of these government offices out of the city.

Telecommuting would also help .... there are thousands who commute to work to sit in an office and do stuff they can do from home. Even meetings can be held online reducing the need to be in office to maybe 1 or 2 days per week. I don't know when business in TT will get with the times and move towards telecommuting. Granted it is not THE solution but it can be part of the solution. Those in the knowledge based industries have absolutely no need to be in an office to do their work. With a broadband internet connection and cloud infrastructure and services businesses could easily and quickly implement this type of scenario. They would also save on the expenses associated with maintaining offices for employees and these savings can be used to provide the internet connection and SOHO equipment for employees.

But with 3rd world thinking the norm in TT there's little hope of this happening.

I'm looking forward to the removal of the rest of traffic lights so that we can have a Freeway here in T&T. The lack of lights by GB has really eased congestion both on mornings and afternoons.

And reducing the highway to two lanes just before the interchange... pure GENIUS!

Traffic lights going is just a patch on a major problem ... 12000 + is just the new cars, foreign used not even factored into that.

There comes a point when there are just too many cars for the road/highway to handle at any one moment.

For example South to north in the morning there are no traffic lights yet traffic slows to a crawl from couva/freeport to Chaguanas. There are no obstructions on the road just too many cars entering that area of highway than cars leaving. We have reached critical mass when it comes to the main corridors of this country.

1) Car Pool Lanes 2) Get the trucks off the road during rush hour. 3) Efficient Trains + Buses + Boats
4) Decentralise

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic though. But after having spent quite a considerable sum on their cars do you think a lot of people would be willing to leave their cars home and travel? I can only see it working if punitive measures are added along with improved Public transportation (Tax/Levy for driving into cities, no gasoline subsidy, increased MVT etc.)

HA! No govt will ever have the testicular fortitude to introduce any punitive or controlling measures on the public .... especially when Mr/Ms John/Jane Public pay their morney for their car. Trinidadians are not about changing their ways to help a situation .... it's always let the same continue.

No Sarcasm.
These improvements have made a major difference in commuting time for me personally.

I can't speak for south to north traffic, but where it used to take me 40 mins to an hour to get to work during these vacation times, (an hour to 90 mins when school is open), I've been able to get to and from the office in 20 mins on a bad day. 10 - 15 mins on a regular day.

East/West traffic has been significantly reduced on a morning and an afternoon.
And it seems the MOWT heard my suggestion when I was telling a couple associates that I believed they should extend the Aranguez exit filter to meet the UBH exit. I firmly believe that when THAT opens... there'll be no more crawl from Maritime to Gran Bazaar.

Also, I hate to say it, but I've noticed that alot of the traffic I experience when I'm heading southbound is actually macco traffic. People slow to a crawl and near stop just to see what's causing traffic on the OTHER SIDE.

I think you need to join some of the highway threads in the ole talk section. Most people from the east who utilize the CRH have experienced increases in commute time since the GB lights have been removed (not counting the time school has been closed).

Yes I have noticed a frustrating increase caused by the usual Valsayn lights and people waiting till last second to get into the left lane to head south or north.

As soon as you pass that point, it clears up.

The increase by Valsayn doesn't affect the overall decrease imho

Overall I think they have adjusted the timing of most of the lights on the CRH seeking to "hold back" traffic as much as possible. This coupled with the three lane to two lane convergence by Nestle has increased the morning commute at least for me.

I'm seeing the new Hyundai Accent is 1.6 rather than a 1.4. Is there any difference in the features offered? Or is it simply a bigger engine?

Cost is now $153,000

it's nice to see the smaller sedans (subcompacts) with the more powerful engine option eg:

Hyundai Accent 1.6 $153k
Chevrolet Sonic 1.6 $161k
Suzuki SX4 Sport 1.6 $161k
Honda City with the 1.5 ivtec $161k

Let's be real it could have been worse and with a higher price not too sure if they still valid though..
