A31 daily/project...

Postby streaminhonda » June 25th, 2013, 8:52 pm

So on the 23/06/2013 I acquired an A31 cefiro with a rb25de engine and transmission.
This will be my first ever build and it will def be a slow one, as the car is my daily as well...
Engine and transmission so far so good, but there are some things that needs addressing before I can actually run it hard, for now I don't cross 60km/hr and here's why.

1. Steering rack needs adjusting. (small play on the steering)
2. Replace steering rack boot rubbers.
3. Replace LS rear outer axle boot rubber.
4. Rear tyres.
5. Alignment, speed balance & camber.

There are some other things like shocks (damn things expensive :? ), minor electrical stuff (nothing major thank goodness), a paint over an oh yea maybe ah lil drop... but like I said slow and steady is the name of this game so we'll see how it goes...

Any hoo nuff talk, hold some pics...

Rb25de is a pretty good daily. Easy on the gas and puts out decent power. You can try getting some S13 shocks and springs to replace the a31 set. They drop the car.

If your working inside the car the skyline R33 cluster fits in with little mods.

Really, thanks for the info. But will any r33 cluster work or am I looking for a specific one???
BTW what's the selling price for a set of s13 shocks and springs?

That's what you need. See in the a31 group on Facebook. They usually sell parts cheap and everyone is pretty helpful. I usually get some rb parts from the members

Yea man thanks, apparently some ppl find it too good lookin, and you'll see why...

Purchased some stuff to do some regular maintenance on Friday, these products were recommended by the parts place down on my side (Patos), any suggestions on better products for future use would be appreciated...

Image

All of the above was changed Saturday night, except the plugs and rear pads as the rear ones on the car was still good and I had to source a 8 socket to remove the coil packs to change the plugs...

Then earlier on before this happened...

Image

Speeding B15 + wet road + Piarco round about + me minding my own bizness = new door for the ceffy... :(

And them as if that wasn't enough after doing the above work on the ceffy this happened...

Image

While positioning the jack to remove the jack stand under the car, the jack stand some how slipped and my fingers were sandwiched between the piece of board that was on the jack and the car chassis... :faint:

Luckily no fingers were broken or busted, no one was hurt in the accident... I guess things could have been worse...

goddamn son! that ceffy trying to kill you?

saw you're using the G-power plugs, good replacement, but imo, the V-powers are just as affordable and work like a charm especially on RBs. just get the proper heat range for your application.

i have an oem rb25 turbo manifold (with a busted turbo) to donate to the project whenever you need to feel a little more than great gas mileage :D

Car need some prayers yo... But enjoying it never the less, noticed that sometimes when going over bumps I get ah squeak from the suspension, but when I checked the bushings and everything was good... Any ideas on what it might be???
I know the shocks are gone, just saving up some coin to get a set of s13 coilovers that I eyeing on d forum, but I don't think I ever heard shocks squeak so....

Okay, so here is the reason behind the bandwidth overload of pics...
Please correct me if i am wrong or misunderstood something, i tend to go deep into any vehicle i own, knowledge never kills right...

I suspect that this car originally came with the hicas system installed from factory, but based on the pics from the steering rack post i can see that part of what i suspect to be some sort of "distribution block" for the power steering fluid have been sealed off...

This then lead me to check the rear suspension and based on the A31 Cefiro Tech Thread (http://www.trinituner.com/v3/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=314502),
Bear in mind that a non-HICAS R32/S13/A31/C33 would use toe arms whereas a HICAS car would use the rack and tie-rods to adjust toe.
... So i saw no rack and no tie-rods, based on my research a hicas lock bar must be used when the associated hicas system is removed. Since none of the mentioned items were found then i guess i have a normal cefiro 6x1 rear end...
If swapping diffs be aware that there are different half-shafts (the first "short" piece of axle that comes of the differential housing). There are the 2x3, 5x1 and 6x1 combination i.e. 3 sets of 2 bolts side by side or 5 individual 1 bolt or as in the case of the GTR 6 individual bolts.
So my question is what differential setup would i be running based on the info above? Would i have to actually open it up to tell? I kinda tried an experiment when i first got the car by doing a little burnout and also by jacking up the rear and rotating the wheels. The vehicle burn out marks indicated that both wheels were spinning and not one and in the rotation test both wheels would spin in the same direction... Is it safe to conclude that i have a LSD installed and how do i figure out what kind?

Now on to the transmission, the previous owner claims that the engine swap included a RB25de and rb25 transmission. Based on the posted pics above, is it possible to determine if this is indeed true? If so how do you identify the different transmission/gearbox types?
The reason for my doubts is as follows:
1. The car originally had a RB20E engine (http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=199089)
2. The hold/auto/power button on the center console works. (not sure if this can be made to work with a rb25 transmission)
3. The actual change of engine document from license office only states engine. (not sure if transmission is required to be documented in the change?)

As i said before i tend to dive head first into any of my vehicles, my previous vehicle was a nissan cube and the one year i had that vehicle, i can tell anyone who asks what to look for when hunting for parts, that tiida, march even sylphy parts will work on the z11 cube... So pls bear with me, knowledge is power right...
