Demonstrating the success Apple has had in continuing to sell previous-generation iPhone models at a discounted price, the iPhone 3GS was the second-best-selling smartphone in the U.S. last quarter, bested only by Apple's iPhone 4.

The results represent the third quarter of 2011, before the iPhone 4S became available. The new data, from the NPD Group, shows domestic sales of both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS beat out rivals like the HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid 3 and Samsung Intensity II.

NPD also found that prices of smartphones are falling even though consumers originally considered playing more for their handset. For example, among those who planned to buy a smartphone in the $200 to $250 range, 64 percent made their final purchase a handset under $200.

The average selling prices for smartphones have now declined for four consecutive quarters. In the third quarter of calendar 2011, the average smartphone cost consumers $135.

Based on this, NPD said that smartphone makers and carriers are "leaving money on the table," as consumers express interest in paying more for a better handset.

The new "Smartphone Track" service from NPD also found that mobile accessories had a strong quarter, with the market led by Zagg, followed by Otter Products, Just Wireless, Motorola, and Incase Designs.

"Even as smartphone prices continue to decline, the accessory attachment rates for smartphones in Q3 was unchanged since last year," said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. "This indicates further opportunity for retailers to improve revenue numbers by focusing marketing efforts on selling more accessories."

NPD's data is based on U.S. consumers age 18 and older who reported purchasing a mobile phone or smartphone. The data does not represent corporate or enterprise mobile phone purchases.

The new data is the latest to show the strong performance that Apple's iPhone 3GS, first released in 2009, continues to experience in the market. Various reports have reaffirmed that Apple's previous-generation models routinely outsell newer Android-powered devices.

------

iOS 5.0.1 was released last week with promises to fix the issue of battery life that has been plaguing many users and some security issues like the Smart Cover hack.

As we originally reported, the update even left some of those without battery issues with quicker battery drains. Over the weekend, even more issues within iOS 5.0.1 have arisen including Wi-Fi signal loss, microphone failures, and cellular network issues.

If you head on over to the Apple Support Forum you’ll find a very long list of issues people are having. The most prominent complaint is still the battery life. ”The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices,” Apple said in a statement to All Things Digital. “We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

Among the Wi-Fi, microphone, and cellular issues, the other big bug in iOS 5.0.1 has to do with Contacts.app. All of the names and numbers associate together inside of Contacts.app, but when making a phone call or sending a text through iMessage, 5.0.1 can’t seem to associate the name with the number as usual.

iTunes 10.5.1 is out with iTunes Match on board.

Thanks in advance.
yes the tstt GSM will work once you cut it properly

roaming will work once you have roaming turned on. I suggest you do not use data when roaming as that can be very expensive since the iphone connects to data all the time by iteself, even when it's locked/off.

G-Form is again demonstrating the protection of their cases by having skydivers drop two iPads from 1300 ft.

To demonstrate its RPT energy absorbing technology, G-Form goes skydiving with both the Extreme Edge and the Extreme Portfolio iPad cases and drops both iPads from above 1300 feet AGL after playing movies in free fall. Neither iPad sustains any damage with the movies still playing after ground impact. G-Form's RPT technology was originally developed to protect athletes from impacts, but is now incorporated into their line of electronic device protection for tablets, laptop computers and other devices.

------

Developers have cracked Siri's security protocols which will make it possible to use the assistant on any device including the iPad or even Android smartphones, according to Applidium.

Here's some of what they discovered:

The iPhone 4S really sends raw audio data. It's compressed using the Speex audio codec, which makes sense as it's a codec specifically tailored for VoIP. The iPhone 4S sends identifiers everywhere. So if you want to use Siri on another device, you still need the identifier of at least one iPhone 4S. Of course we're not publishing ours, but it's very easy to retrieve one using the tools we've written. Of course Apple could blacklist an identifier, but as long as you're keeping it for personal use, that should be alright!

The protocol is actually very, very chatty. Your iPhone sends a tons of things to Apple's servers. And those servers reply an incredible amount of informations. For example, when you're using text-to-speech, Apple's server even reply a confidence score and the timestamp of each word.

Applidium has released the tools they wrote to help them understand the protocol. If you know what you're doing the tools should be enough to help you write a Siri-enabled application.

------

A test performed by a developer for ZDNet confirms that the iPhone 4S battery issues are software based.

This developer who wanted to remain anonymous had two iPhone 4S devices purchased at the same time, connected to the same network, and running iOS 5.0.1. One had battery issues and one did not.

So that we could totally rule out this being a hardware problem the developer took things a step further. He factory reset both handsets and then recovered then from a backup. However, rather than reloading them with their original backup, he swapped them over. He reloading his day-to-day handset with the backup from his development handset, and loaded the development handset with the backup from his regular day-to-day handset.

The problem jumped handsets. Now the handset that was his development test bed (but loaded with the apps and settings from his day-to-day handset) is displaying the battery drain problem. The other handset (the one that was displaying the problem), is showing excellent battery life.

The iPhone 4S battery issues were always assumed to be software related; however, this provides some confirmation of that. Apple has said it continues to work on resolving the issues.

Whether the iOS 5.0.1 update didn't fix all your battery woes or you're just looking to improve your iPhone's daily lifespan, we've got a few tips that can help you squeeze a little more juice out of your iDevice. Some are easy, some require a little additional hardware. Either way, these tips should help your iPhone make it through the day (or longer).

Start with the Simple Stuff

There are a few things everyone ought to do if they're looking to get a little more power from their iPhone, and for the most part it just involves understanding which features have a noticeable impact on the battery. Some are obvious and some are not, but if you turn them off or manage them better your device will stay on for a little longer each day.

Disabling Push Email will let your device idle rather than constantly waiting around for a new message. Sure, you might not get an email seconds after it was sent, but if immediate delivery isn't critical you should just set your phone to poll your mail servers less often.

Turning off Location Services is another helpful battery saver. Your GPS loves sipping power, so if you keep your apps from constantly tracking your location your iPhone will last a bit longer.

Download over Wi-Fi instead of 3G. If you have any larger downloads, such as a software update, a podcast, music, video, or whatever, you'll be better off letting Wi-Fi handle the download. First of all, it'll generally download faster over a Wi-Fi connection so your phone won't be actively downloading for quite as long. Second, your phone's 3G radio tends to be a little more battery-hungry so it'll cause more of a drain regardless.

Disable unnecessary notifications. Every time you receive a notification, your device's screen lights up to tell you. This takes a little power and you probably don't need to be notified of every little thing that every app wants to tell you. Go into your iPhone's notification settings (in the Settings app) and turn off notifications for any app you don't really care about.

Clear the multitasking queue so you don't have an endless trail of open apps. Even though Apple designed multitasking to be battery-friendly, suspending a ton of apps still takes its toll. It can be frustrating to manually close a bunch of apps in the multitasking queue, but doing this on a weekly basis can help reduce unwanted battery drain.

Clearing all multitasking apps to save power is a REALLY touchy topic online eh. Some guys like @chpwn will beg to differ on the matter. Because how it is developed, iOS will pause running apps, instead of running them. if they are deemed not in use, they will be killed to suit to allow more demanding apps take the memory. Even though the icon may be on the bar, it /may/ not be running or even have anything going on at all due to non compatibility etc. Some jailbreak tweaks seek to remove those, or even quit all.

What some argue is that apps simply resume from a paused state, and not from scratch. When you kill the app, the app now has to return to its original state, thereby using more power over and over each time...

I honestly quit all when I can

Hey, I don't know if anyone here knows but will a normal data sim work in an iphone 4?
I have an iphone 4 unlocked and I have a data plan on my sim. If I cut the sim and place it into the phone will I be able to use data even if I don't have an iphone plan?

References discovered in the underlying code of Apple's iOS mobile operating system suggest that some cross-platform features of Mac OS X iChat could make their way to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Though the code discovered by developer John Heaton, and highlighted by TUAW, doesn't specifically mention iChat, it does include strings related to outside services AOL Instant Messenger and Jabber. The iMessage application found in iOS 5 allows text messaging, but does not currently connect to third-party chat services like AIM.

But the iChat software built into Mac OS X does connect to services like AIM, Jabber and others, like Yahoo Messenger. The code references discovered by Heaton suggest that Apple was at one point testing similar functionality in iMessage for iOS 5.

Also interesting is the fact that the "IMService" code in iOS 5 mentions both the iMessage and FaceTime services. Currently, iMessage and FaceTime are separate applications in iOS 5, with the iPhone handing off FaceTime duties to the handset's native "Phone" application, and the iPad and iPod touch featuring a separate application specifically for FaceTime. The code might suggest that FaceTime could eventually become integrated in iMessage.

Even on the Mac, FaceTime and iChat are different applications without integration. And there is currently no support for iMessage in Mac OS X, though there has been evidence that Apple could bring iMessage support to iChat in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

iMessage is Apple's new proprietary chat client that debuted with the launch of iOS 5 in October. For iPhone users, it handles text messaging responsibilities, but it also allows for free messaging between iPhone users, as well as iPad and iPod touch users, in a manner similar to Research in Motion's BlackBerry Messenger.

Image

The iMessage software is based on the same push technology that Apple developed for use in iOS application notifications, push e-mail and contacts.

Like iMessage, FaceTime originally debuted on the iPhone and was not available on Macs. But earlier this year, Apple released a dedicated FaceTime application on the Mac App Store for 99 cents.

Apple has shown interest in building a new universal power adapter compatible with different DC voltage levels, allowing portable devices like a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad to be charged at the same time with just one wall plug.

The proposed invention was revealed this week in a new Apple patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and discovered by AppleInsider. The filing, entitled "Multi-Output Power Supply," notes that most commercially available adapters do not include multiple outputs for supplying different DC voltage levels.

"As such, users may often purchase a device-specific adapter for powering a device," it states. "However, this requires that the user carry a separate adapter for each device, which can be cumbersome when a user is traveling, as many users forget to bring all of the associated adapters required for various devices."

Those adapters can also be relatively bulky, Apple notes, making them less than ideal to carry while traveling. The company also said that it can be confusing to users when multiple adapters are at use in a stationary location, like a home or office.

Apple's solution is a new universal power supply that would connect to multiple electronic devices. This would make it unnecessary for users to carry multiple power adapters while traveling with multiple portable devices.

The filing describes a single power adapter that includes a DC-to-DC converter, allowing it to meet the different voltage requirements of unique devices. The adapter could also intelligently control power supplied through its outlets to ensure that the correct voltage is sent out to appropriate devices.

In addition to iPods, iPhones and iPads, the application specifically notes that such a system could also be compatible with Apple's patented MagSafe technology, used to supply power to the company's MacBook line of notebooks.

Image

The charging cable could include a power "brick" similar to the ones currently used with a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. That brick would include the necessary voltage converter, and could allow another portable device like an iPhone to be plugged in to charge.

The proposed invention was first filed by Apple in May of 2010, and was made public this week. It is credited to Aleksandar Pance, Nicholas Alan Rundle, and John Douglas Field.

The latest application is not the first time Apple has shown interest in redesigning its power adapters to allow charging of multiple devices. In September, another filing showed the company is interested in building a universal charger that would allow portable devices to not only recharge their batteries, but also sync data while plugged in to the same adapter.

For the first time ever, an iPhone is now more likely to show up in a conference room than a BlackBerry, a new Mobile Workforce Report from research firm iPass suggests. According to the report, 95% of mobile workers now own a smartphone, up 10 percentage points from 2010, and 45% of the enterprise workforce carries an iPhone, up from 31.1% last year. “BlackBerry has not really fallen from the top spot in so much as other smartphones have grown faster,” the report said. “BlackBerry market share has only declined slightly from 35% in 2010 to 32% today.” Read on for more.

Android’s market share doubled year over year to surpass Symbian with a 21% share of the enterprise smartphone market. 18% of mobile workers said they intend to purchase an iPhone in 2012, 11.2% are planning to buy an Android device and 3.6% want a Windows Phone. Only 2.3% of workers have plans to buy a BlackBerry next year. Several respondents reported owning multiple devices on different platforms.

The iPass study also found a number of other compelling tidbits: 40% of mobile workers would feel disoriented if they didn’t have a smartphone for a week, 34% would feel distraught and 10% would feel lonely. The iPass study was based on a survey of more than 2,300 workers around the world.

Apple has pulled Texas Hold'em, the only in-house iOS game its produced, from the App Store, reports MacRumors.

Go all in with Texas Hold'em, a new iPod touch and iPhone application. Play against realistic opponents in single-player mode. Or play over a Wi-Fi network with up to eight of your friends. Drag your chips to go all in. Flick your cards to fold. Double-tap the table to check. Everything that makes Texas Hold'em so wildly popular now fits in your pocket. And it's available from iTunes for just $4.99.

MacRumors notes that Texas Hold'em began as a game for non-iOS iPod models, debuting in late 2006. When Apple launched the App Store in 2008, a redesigned version of the game appeared as a debut title. At the time, the game appeared to provide evidence that Apple was looking to pursue game development.

Michael Capozzi claims he has found a way to unlock the iPhone 4S without using any hardware or software. This video shows a demonstration of his method. It has not been confirmed by us or any third party yet.

Update: some people have confirmed this method works. However, you will need to repeat the process in case you reset the iPhone.
Note: Apparently, this works with AT&T's iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. You will need to cut the T-Mobile SIM card so it fits into the Micro-SIM card slot in the iPhone 4S. There are several devices to do this accurately available online.

    1. Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
    2. Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
    3. Turn on Airplane Mode
    4. Take out AT&T SIM card
    5. Insert T-Mobile SIM card
    6. Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on ‘Forget this Network" to make sure it doesn't connect automatically later)
    7. Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
    8. Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
    9. EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the ‘E' on the top left corner of the screen
    10. Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
    11. Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
    12. When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection
    13. Eject SIM card
    14. Activation Required screen will be displayed the second time
    15. Insert SIM card
    16. Unlocked!

Unlocking your iPhone would allow you to use it in T-Mobile's network as well as in other countries' networks.

So anyone willing to test it out?

I wonder if this unlock , makes it usable and updatable on any carrier

From what I know you can't borrow a gevey sim , once it's used on one device it will not work on others , the gevey sim is easier to use but I do not recommend it at all unless u have no choice , buy it locally , don't take the risk to buy it online and it doesn't work but a guy in this thread knows a legit website you can get it from last price I saw for the older REAL Gevey sims to unlock iOS 4 was about $35 us ..so estimate $350 tt for shipping taxes etc

The instructions to unlock suppose to come with it also

There are a lot of fake gevey sims so just a heads up

I wonder if this unlock , makes it usable and updatable on any carrier
from the post it seems to be usable on other carriers

it should be updatable too, since you would just update the phone and you unlock it again by repeating the method. This method would only need to be done once and then again when the phone OS is updated. Unless of course an update "fixes" this loophole and prevents this method from working again.

There are a lot of fake gevey sims so just a heads up

so i have to go spend $350 just to unlock it.
dam.
iphones demand $$$

what other alternatives do i have besides gevey?

Only the first set of iPhone 4's on the lowest baseband are unlock able with ultra snow , and most of them were sold when iPhone 4 came out , anything else other than a factory unlocked iPhone 4 will need the gevey sim

It's gonna be impossible to find an iPhone 4 on the lowest baseband that can be used with ultra snow to unlock ,

The only safest option is to buy a factory unlocked iPhone 4 and done the worries so you can update it as usual without crashing it or locking it then having to pay guys like me to fix it.
