Hoffenheim to try their luck vs Bayern
Hoffenheim will be the next team trying to score a goal - and possibly beat - German league leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Munich have won their last 10 competitive games, six in the Bundesliga and four in the Champions league, without dropping a goal since losing the season-opener 1-0 at home against Borussia Moenchengladbach on August 7.
Manchester City were the latest victims on Tuesday as the ambitious Premier League side went down 2-0 at the Allianz Arena.
Nothing seems to go wrong for Munich, with Franck Ribery back in sparkling form, Arjen Robben available again from injury and the once unstable defence a brick wall for any opponent.
"Right now, it's not just that we have great team spirit, we're extremely settled and stable, our zonal play is excellent - and we have outstanding individuals too," said coach Jupp Heynckes.
Bayern command the standings with 18 points and an impressive 21-1 goal, two points clear of Werder Bremen and Moenchengladbach. Eight goals have come Germany forward Mario Gomez, who tops the Bundesliga scorers' table in search of back-to-back top honours.
Munich are unbeaten in six top flight meetings with fourth-ranked Hoffenheim (12 points), who are coming off a 2-0 defeat in Cologne.
Hoffenheim's Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson said that Munich are "an outstanding team and they're in great form," but still hopes that his team can defy the odds.
"We're playing at home and we want to get back to winning ways. There's no reason why we can't take points off them," he said.
The other big weekend game is on Sunday between SV Hamburg and Schalke -with Huub Stevens making his league return as Schalke coach after also being wanted by the bottom-ranked hosts.
Hamburg dismissed Michael Oenning on September 19 and Schalke's Ralf Rangnick resigned three days later citing burnout. Hamburg held talks with Stevens about a return to the club he coached 2007-2008 but ended them once Stevens said he was also meeting with Schalke.
Stevens signed on Tuesday at Schalke, a club he led to the 1997 Uefa Cup title and two German cups during a first tenure 1996-2002.
"The team has a lot of potential. But we have to find the right balance," said Stevens.
Schalke lie fifth with 12 points while Hamburg remain bottom on four points despite a first season victory last weekend, 2-1 in Stuttgart, under caretaker Rodolfo Esteban Cardoso, who will also be in charge on Sunday.
Champions Borussia Dortmund celebrate their 1,500th Bundesliga game in a first meeting with (winless) Augsburg on Saturday and aim to pick up the pieces from an eye-opening 3-0 Champions League drubbing at Olympique Marseille.
Dortmund wasted a host of chances again in southern France and individual mistakes at the back taught them a harsh European lesson.
The other games are Kaiserslautern v Stuttgart (Friday), Bayer Leverkusen v Wolfsburg, Nuremberg v Mainz, Hertha Berlin v Cologne, Freiburg v Moenchengladbach (Saturday) and Hanover v Werder Bremen (Sunday).

Bayern Munich could be tested by dangerous Napoli
Bayern Munich's 100 percent record in the Champions League could face a serious test against a dangerous Napoli side on Tuesday, in a match that will mark a return of sorts for the German team's manager.
Jupp Heynckes was in his first stint as Bayern coach in 1989 when Bayern was eliminated by Diego Maradona's Napoli in the UEFA Cup semifinals - and the sides haven't met since.
''Napoli is just as dangerous a squad now as they were then,'' Heynckes said. ''They run a lot and play exciting football, which isn't really very Italian.''
Bayern leads Group A with six points from two games. Napoli - which is also unbeaten - is next with four, Manchester City has one and Villarreal zero.
City hosts Villarreal in the other group match Tuesday.
Bayern dismissed both Villarreal and City by scores of 2-0 in its opening group matches, while Napoli drew 1-1 at City then marked its first home match in the competition since the Maradona era by beating Villarreal 2-0.
Napoli has also beaten both AC Milan and Inter Milan in Serie A, although Walter Mazzarri's side slumped to a 2-1 home loss against Parma on Saturday.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis suggested that his players were thinking ahead to the Bayern match, which is expected to draw a rare sellout with more than 60,000 fans at the dilapidated San Paolo stadium.
''We've got to keep our feet on the ground, (Bayern) is a great squad but anything is possible,'' De Laurentiis said.
Napoli will once again rely on its ''Three Tenors'' in attack: Marek Hamsik, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani, whose hat trick against Milan last month was his fifth three-goal game in two seasons.
Napoli relies heavily on counterattacks, attempting to sprint past its opponents, which could be a dangerous tactic against Bayern.
''We're playing the kind of football you don't see every day,'' Heynckes said after Saturday's 4-0 rout of Hertha Berlin, Bayern's 12th consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.
''We're making a very good impression,'' agreed Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who called Napoli ''the best team in Italy at the moment.''
Rummenigge warned against any complacency after Bayern opened a five point gap at the top of the Bundesliga.
''We can't start thinking the season will look after itself from now on. We have to keep our focus and carry on, just as we've done so well thus far,'' said Rummenigge.
Heynckes could afford the luxury of taking off winger Thomas Mueller, defender Philipp Lahm and in-form striker Mario Gomez early on Saturday to prepare for Tuesday's trip.
However, Netherlands winger Arjen Robben remains sidelined after a season beset by back and groin problems.
With the final to be held in Munich next year, Bayern is keen to progress in the Champions league.
''We're still very hungry. We're on a hunt for trophies,'' said Bayern captain Lahm.
Napoli's reserve forward Goran Pandev scored the goal that eliminated Bayern in the last 16 in March while he was still with Inter, although a thigh strain is likely to rule him out this time.
Meanwhile, City will be looking to revitalize its European campaign after beating Aston Villa 4-1 Saturday to go top of the Premier League.
Manager Roberto Mancini is likely to recall Argentina striker Sergio Aguero - Maradona's son-in-law - who only recently returned to training after a groin problem.
The summer signing from Atletico Madrid should start alongside either Edin Dzeko or Mario Balotelli, who has impressed of late with goals in his last two league games.
Playmakers Samir Nasri and David Silva should also be recalled, but Carlos Tevez is still out in the cold while the club investigates his alleged breach of contract for apparently refusing to come off the bench in City's loss to Bayern.
''We've had a slow start in the Champions League but hopefully we'll pick up and put in a performance that we know we can,'' said City midfielder James Milner.
Villarreal has won just two of its last 15 matches in all competitions, and drew 0-0 at Getafe on Saturday.
''It's a tough group, and obviously our first taste of Champions League football together, but we know we can improve on our Champions League performances so far,'' Millner added. ''A win is vitally important and I'm sure we can get it.''
