Build Log - '07 Hilux - Complete.

Postby Firewall » May 4th, 2011, 9:03 am

For the Easter my brother decided to take a vacation, and left me with his vehicle and some money............

Since this in the ICE forum, i guess that you know where it is going. So on to the pics.

Headunit:
The headunit is a Clarion VRX785bt. Its a very nice feature packed headunit (bt, usb, dvd, etc....) but it is SEVERELY lacking in processing. Will either be changed or a eq746 may be added. Strangely enough, I don't have a pic of it in the van, so here is one of it in the car.....

Image

Image

Stripping out the upholstery:
Image

Factory Goodness:
The vehicle came from toyota with clarion 6" in the rear doors which literally disintegrated over time.
Image

Old Vs New:
These were replaced by the JBL GTO 627
Image

Dead Doors:
The doors were deadened both inside and out with most of the gaping holes being sealed. The floor was also done, from as far up the firewall that i could reach, straight down to the back seat. Also special effort was made along the path of the driveshaft.

Image

Power:
The RF T600.4 was scalped from the car for this install. Hopefully in time a 1000.1 will join it.
Image

Crimped and Heat shrunk:
All connections were crimped, soldered and heatshrunk, from the speakers to the passives to the power and ground. The wires used was the Shok Industries 4awg and 12awg CCA, which are very very nice to work with. Did not use any techflex in this install because of budgetary constraints explained later.

Image

Front Door Intended:
The original intention was to use the JBL T696 from the car in the doors, however due to TheWiseOne (Michael and Ryan) those plans abruptly changed, along with the proposed budget layout. The baffles were cut and speakers connected and installed. The tweeters are mounted in the kickpanel and are firing off axis. Will try to do a review later in the thread after they have broken in and i get some listening time.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Back Doors Installed:
Pretty straightforward installation of the rear coaxials.
Image

Sub Stage:
So....there i was......thinking about what to use for the sub stage.
Moving from a ported single 12" pioneer premier flat sub i was hesitant and wanted to try something new.

(Enter Ryan and Michael AGAIN.........)

This was made even more difficult by some astounding offers on the new clarion flat 10", however, I could not make it happen with the remaining budget, so it was back to the original plan.....8"

With a maximum of 4.75" working space to retain any access to the underseat compartments, the JBL GTO804 was chosen.........4 of them. This was done for two reasons.
1) the amp is 4ohm stable when bridged (4 of these can be wired to 4 ohms)
2) mono amp upgrade is planned (4 of these can be wired to 1 ohm)

With a recommended sealed volume of 0.3cf they were perfect.

Image

Image

Image

So here is where we stand for a little while.
The box still needs to be carpeted and a few rattles in the back need to be chased down.

After being broken in for a few days/weeks it will be re-tuned and at that point the decision will be made as to the headunit/processing (anybody want it to buy???)

In a couple of months, or sooner if i can find a mono at the right price that will also be added, but it is not a priority for now.

*edit*

We never got around to adding the monoblock. He was satisfied with the output from the system. However we did add the eq746 and here it is installed in the glove box.

Image

On a sad note, the system is going to be uninstalled shortly as he is planning to sell the van.

Some of it will be repurposed to another vehicle within the month, while the rest of it will go into storage. Will try to do a complete vid before taking everything out.

*end edit*

I should update with better photos of the full system installed by next week.

Thanks for watching.

very very nice, neat work.. add external processing imo.. a new headunit with those features and good processing is going to cost quite a penny

Thanks for all the positive feedback from everyone who has commented.

So far the only updates have been:

1) adding some secondskin to the rear wall of the van.

Image

This has made a huge difference over the original bare metal. Eyeballing it it looks to be about the recommended 25%, and special attention was placed of the flat portions. The ridge about halfway up seemed to be "resonating/ringing??" when lightly tapped, and since material was scarce (1.5 sheets) i tried the strips and it worked very well. Sounds solid from just those strips being applied.

Rattles in the rear are now completely gone.

2) box was carpeted.

Image

Image

really just a visual change, but it was really bothering me that it was there and still needed to be done.

Will like to re-install the seatbelts. I have them, but the bolts have wandered off over time.

3) took a pic of the headunit in the vehicle.............finally

There are however, some issues that still need to be ironed out.

1) at high volumes with bass heavy content there is an occasional rattle from the left speaker. Most likely it is a loose screw in the baffle (*crosses fingers*)

2) I am now reminded why we removed this headunit from the car.....................
- the 2V pre-out: Terrible........ because i'm certain that i'm getting no where near 2V before the signal starts to clip.
- 3 band eq.........really??.....????? don't even need to explain this one......
(ok fine, i'm nowhere near skilled enough to tune with only 3 bands.)

The headunit will NOT be replaced however (as pimptacular said, its just not worth changing it if the only issue is processing), so we will be looking into additional processing.

Most probably a eql and crossover, or if i can get one/two for a relatively good price...a dqxs.

Thanks again to TheWiseOnes for taking the time to listen and point out the flaws in the system and their advice on additional processing

two things:

1) i cannot comment on how they compare because i have not heard either the the RE or the ID. What i can say is that in my opinion, the build quality on these are better.

(lets not get hung up over this since its only my opinion)

2) presently they sound nice, but i want to get the proper processing and tuning done before i say much more about it. However, it does get "loud", with only 100rms going to each speaker.

I'd agree with you in general re JBL / Infinity bass drivers. And there's some useful tweaks thrown in there too, like the folded over cone edge (reduces flex) and the tinsel-lead standoffs (eliminates lead slap, AND makes it easier to replace the leads if necessary) . What I'm less happy about (at least as far as the Infinity drivers I have) is the motor noise and a suspension that seems more geared toward preventing some idiot at the controls from destroying the driver than it is towards getting the most SQ. But all in all, all the JBL / Infinity bass drivers I've come across in the last few years represent good value for money.

looking good.....one question though, why not install the H/U in the space underneath where it is now? if it were me I would have done that so that the screen would not be that high and so look a lil bit more stealth.....just a thought.

was done that way for a couple reasons:

1) the headunit itself protrudes from the dash by about 1.25" (that is apparently how it is designed to allow for screen clearance) so if it were mounted lower it would stick out like a sore thumb.

2) when the screen opens it would block access to the pocket, also if anything protrudes from the pocket and the screen opens accidentally the gears could be damaged.

3) the screen is not open for 99.5% of the time and with the screen down it looks stock"ish"

if you compare the pics with it installed in the car you would see that it looks really awkward how it sticks out, but in the van i cut a finisher from a pioneer deck to just "break up" the space and give it a more discreet appearance which allows it to flow a little better into the top of the dash. if mounted in the lower slot there would be nothing to "blend" it with
