Wow so it took the PP three months to build up a budget deficit, after eight years of fiscal prudence huh?

Ppl I'm not talking "defacto", I'm talking "dejure" (thought that was kinda obvious )
Obviously we dipped into the red last year.
That's a major reason why...surprise surprise Manning is no longer in power!

If we start off in the red, do you actually think it will dip back into the black given this gov'ts unwillingness to industrialize?

Let me break this down for UML et al who are too *sigh* to understand what I'm asking.

"I eh ask wha de outcome of de fiscal year was mamoo, I ahskin wha de gubment did say it wanted to do at the start ah de financial cycle...wha actually play out is nah wha I does be discussing right now...scn"

Expect 2010 budget deficit
Finance Minister Winston Dookeran says he expects a deficit in the upcoming 2010-2011 budget, the date of which he’s keeping close to his chest. “I think there will be (a deficit)... but not as large as we first anticipated.” Last year’s budget, Dookeran said, was approximately $45 billion. Last year’s deficit was $7.7 billion. “I am hoping we could at least get there as well,” was Dookeran’s response when probed about this year’s budget package. “We are still working on it. We will explain everything when the budget is read.”

When was the last time we had a deficit budget people? Not entirely sure...Anyone?

When was the last time T&T was able to spend more than it could've brought in?

Maybe I should spell it out in the future. Because I thought it obvious that I didn't mean the outcome but what was actually spelt out in parliament.

Geez an ages, I'm dealing with some idiots here. Can't leave anything to chance with you people yes.

You hadda be batshitcrazy to think I meant what ACTUALLY happened after the budgetary year was outlined. All I'm asking for is from the onset, from the actual documentation...when last have we run deficit budgets. That's it.

If you guys wanna run a thread about over shooting the budget, shortfalls and miscalculations...go right ahead.

What are you talking about?

Hoss...listen.

I said there was not a deficit budget run between those years-they were all conceptualized surpluses. What ACTUALLY happened is a totally different story as almost all turned into eventual deficits.

What is so hard to understand :?

So anyway for those who actually understood what I meant.

By starting off on this foot(in the red), already behind the curve so to speak...can the nation overcome and close the gap?

The gov't is running a deficit due to the fact that they have not created any avenues for income generation nor diversification of the account either.

PNM ran a deficit budget.
This Government inherited it. They have not even been in office for a year, so yes where the economy and its turnaround is concerned the time in office is very relevant.

No Smelter
No Property Tax
Petrotrin is currently in a state of Stagnation

These two things are what the people of Trinidad and Tobago voted AGAINST. It is why PNM is no longer in power and why they only have 12 seats and 3 corporations.

Couple this with the gov'ts extremely lofty plans and spiraling out of control inflation...

Again, caused by the previous government. The wasted billions were not spent under this Government.

Those are the major reasons why they plan to run a deficit.

You haven't quoted any reasons.

What you've noted are the reasons why the PNM is no longer in power:

a) An environmentally disastrous Smelter plant or plants. If the only way to survive is to destroy our country and kill our people then what's the point of that 'solution' ?

b) A draconian Property Tax that increases taxes by an insane amount all at once. Why was this even necessary if there had been proper management of the hundreds of billions of dollars which we weren't even expecting to receive but which the PNM government oversaw.

c)Petrotrin? All the contracts that are in dispute, all the methodologies and procedures, all the plans and their execution...who did these take place under? Not the present administration...it all happened under the PNM.

Again, nothing you have posted is indicative of plans or solutions. THey are indicative of band-aids hastily slapped over gaping wounds, the majority of which were self inflicted.

what are you doing to fix the issue?

Wait until the budget is presented and then we will hear what their plans are to try to recover from the mess that the PNM put the country through. As of now you yourself don't know.

A first step and parallel course is to try to track down where the 300 billion dollars that passed through this country went.

PNM ran a deficit budget.
True. It was conceptualized as a surplus however. It was WAYYYY too close, thus it easily turned into a deficit. Poor miscalculations on their part. What this gov't is planning to do is start us off in the red and by some grace of god get us into the black.

This Government inherited it.
Then they should fix it. Because every other surplus budget(which eventually turned into a deficit) has been met by another surplus plan the following year under PNM's tenure. They found ways to absolve the run over (in this case 7 billion) and plans for more generation of income. It exudes a certain amount of confidence in the business community and shows that the gov't is committed to continued growth.

They have not even been in office for a year, so yes where the economy and its turnaround is concerned the time in office is very relevant.

Stupidly. One was not their fault:PNM did not campaign/address the property tax properly, the other was through their own ignorance...no smelter through some foolish thought that the environment would be at stake. Our development is stagnated due to the biased unfounded ramblings of some environmentalists which you guys fell for hook line and sinker.

It is why PNM is no longer in power and why they only have 12 seats and 3 corporations.

Couple this with the gov'ts extremely lofty plans and spiraling out of control inflation...

Again, caused by the previous government. The wasted billions were not spent under this Government.

Lofty plans are not caused by another party. They are the PP's one misdoing.

Those are the major reasons why they plan to run a deficit.
