No that's the norm for the Hajj Visa's. The Saudi Immigration Officials haven't come for a few years, but because of the stress some Trinis had last year to get Visas in Caracas, they did us a favor by sending someone especially for Trinidad this year.

The officer in charge of this had to be badly informed or this has to be someone causing "mischief" deliberately. When the Saudis used to come in the past, they would stay at the Hilton and receive the local pilgrim's passports for the local group Hajj leader at the hotel. There with the help of some students who graduated from Universities in Medina and Makkah KSA and also other who are fluent in Arabic and English would writes up and issues the Visas.

A Hajj Visa is about 5 pages long and very detailed and the Saudis would normally only give 300 to Trinidad. The Officials usually stayed for the most 2 days before going to Barbados etc.

So basically they get kick in the face for trying once more to treat Trinis good and make it easy for them.

Anyone in law enforcement should know what a "diplomatic passport" means to the holder and what rights it bestows on the holder.

That officer should be disciplined or fired.

as greypatch said there's more too it.... the hyatt' they shouldn't let the police to the room, the Saudi diplomat should've been asked to come to the lounge for questioning & then escorted back to the room with hyatt's manger in tow.

Hyatt policy & procedures were broken there'.... wtf!?!?!

Visas are not issued from a hotel room eh..

This should have been done at a office consulate..or the relevant ministry.

Did the visit co-ordinator inform the authorities ?

there are 2 sides to the story wait for the other side.

Misinformation ;)

The guy came through customs and immigration with his diplomatic credentials so the relevant ministry did know about the purpose of his visit. I believe he was also met by a ministry of foreign affairs rep at the airport.

The Saudi govt doesnt have a consulate or office in trinidad hence the reason why they probably chose to do it from the hotel room.

There is probably some other side to the story - maybe some islamophobic white boy staying at the Hyatt realise what was going on and made some calls...

Like SR said, nothing will come of it... but it will embarrass us immensely especially with CHOGM a few weeks away.

thanks guy.. Please read patch.
Maserati wrote:lol you really expect the hotel to stop the police??

exactly.. when maybe it was the hotel security who were clicking emo button.

Guys,
1st of all.. Dont blame the Government. If it werent for them, Hajj Leaders would have been in caracas catching tail to get visas.
It seems that persons (popo, et al) were misinformed about it, CHOGM coming up as well, and they acted out of safety for the hyatt and its occupants. What they did however was not right. At lease they apologized.

I think we should thank the Government for helping out in getting the guy here.
Yes, the Government knew what was going as, as ob said, there is no embassy/office for the KSA and this is not the 1st time this has happened (issue of visas in this manner).

Contacted last night, Philbert said while Craig did admit to visiting the diplomat’s hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain on Monday evening, he said his officers did not say they searched Alshubaili.

He said, ’I spoke to Mr Craig, who said they went to investigate a claim of someone handing out visas at the Hyatt.’

’This is not normal, so we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim,’ Philbert said.

"we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim"
"we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim"
"we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim"
"we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim"
"we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim"

words fail me at the height of this hypocrisy!

You know, if they had found guns, drugs or whatever on the said diplomat, the whole attitude of everyone would have been different.

Old articles of diplomatic pouches being used to smuggle drugs would have been brought up.

According to a friend of mine who got his visa to go to hajj this rounds, the said diplomat went to people's houses/offices or wherever to ensure they were given their visas even after this incident.

These are just a few instances of diplomats abusing their power.
