Pedestrians wounded, as cops and car thief shoot it out

TWO men waiting on transportation at the Princes Town promenade were caught in the middle of a gunfight with police and a suspected car thief on Friday night.

One man was grazed on the neck with a bullet and the other on the shoulder. They were treated at the Princes Town district hospital and discharged.

The incident began on Mucurapo Street in San Fernando, when police responded to a report that a black Nissan Almera car was stolen around 7.30 p.m.

An all points bulletin was issued, and officers on mobile patrol along High Street, Princes Town, spotted the vehicle.

Crashed near

police station

Police said the officers chased the vehicle and, on reaching Bonanza Street, the driver opened fire on the officers.

They responded.

Several people were standing on the road, waiting on transportation to get home.

The injured men were assisted by bystanders, who contacted the Emergency Medical Services, police said.

The suspect lost control of the stolen car and crashed into a vehicle near the Princes Town Police Station.

The driver then jumped out of the car and ran into the police station where he was detained.

No firearm was recovered.

Suspect not at home: Mom, dad, held with assault rifle

The parents of a Sea Lots man who police were searching for were detained yesterday after an Assault Rifle and 15 rounds of ammunition were found in their house.

In a police exercise in the Sea Lots community between 4a.m. and 7a.m. yesterday, officers of the Inter Agency Task Force had cause to search several homes in the community.

In one such home the officers executed a search warrant for arms and ammunition at the home of a suspect.

The man was not home at the time, however, his parents, who are both in their 50s, were.

The parents complied with the officers, but the search resulted in the rifle and ammunition being found at their home.

As a result, the two were detained, and are currently aiding police with their inquiries.

The exercise was supervised by Sup Subero and ASP Ramesar.

FIVE TEENS (ALL FROM SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ARIMA) HELD FOR BREAK-IN AT ARIMA STORE

Five minors, all students of secondary schools in Arima, are in police custody at the Arima Police Station after being arrested for damaging a glass at the front of a building valued at $20,000.

The minors were also held for stealing one 32 inch television set and other items valued $6,500 at Phone Ethics, situated at Corner of Farfan Street Arima around 2:30 am on Tuesday morning.

Mrs James owner of Phone Ethics told Guardian Media that around 2:30 am she was at her Mausica Home when she received a message via Blink vigilance that the glass at the store was shattered.

Her husband immediately called the Arima Police Station and informed them about the breaking.

The police officers responded immediately and gave chase.

Two of the minors were subdued at the Arima Savannah, with one being arrested while carrying the television set which fell and was damaged.

Police continued their investigation which led to the arrest of three others, who are all students of secondary school in Arima.

The minors used stones and a piece of metal to break the front glass of the business place, where they entered and were only able to remove one 32 inch tv set and other items valued at $6,500 before making their escape.

James said this is the third time her business place was broken into and is the first time the thieves were held by police.

James said the building that she is renting is not properly secured and despite numerous calls to the landlord to secure the place, her appeals have been ignored.

She said she is asking the landlord to put shutters so that the glass cannot be easily shattered and entry into the building will be more difficult.

James commended the Arima police for their quick response and arrest of the five minors.

PC Persad of the Arima CID is continuing investigations.
