Hybrid fruit trees

Postby rebound » January 9th, 2019, 8:05 am

I cleared a half acre behind the house to plant some fruit trees, I dont want any huge trees there.

Where would be the best place to source those hybrid/minature trees?

I don't want to be the naysayer..but I might as well warn you guys.

I message him a few months ago since I got some acres recently as well. I was curious and skeptical about his grapes & apples for 2 reasons. Firstly, all his "fruiting pics" aren't his, I did a reverse image search on tineye and all of his grapes, apple trees, and even dwarf citrus were from google. Therefore, he has no evidence they will bear as he claimed since only select varieties of apple & grape can fruit properly here, plus you need to "trick" the apples into fruiting properly. He claimed all kinds were good as is...which was pretty sketchy on top of fake pics.
Secondly, I wanted to know if he got the cuttings from a genuine grafted plant, since planting apples or grapes from seed is a very bad idea. The genetic variety of the seeds means you can and most likely will get something very different from the fruit. He never answered my questions and avoided answering which leads me to believe he trying a smart thing. This was the case for other sellers with foreign fruit too.

Other than that, Those fb men digging out your eye with those prices, if you buying one plant for a yard thats ok, but to plant out acres...you will go broke. Most of them didn't offer bulk buying discounts when I asked.

stev wrote:does La Vega estate still sell fruit trees? or fancy plants only?

I checked out La Vega yesterday, they sell fruit trees but they're still in the expensive range for bulk buying purposes. Expect a price range of 45-150 per plant. With grafted citrus, mango, exotic fruit, local fruit. But you can get most of their plants from government farms for a fraction of the price. They did say that they will be getting a larger variety of exotic fruits for Corpus Christi sales. So you guys can wait on that.

For coconuts, I bought some bollee nuts and another hybrid from this guy for $50 a nut..too soon to say if it's real or he talking sh!t. He seemed genuine and knowledgable..gave good advice for planting out and pest control...can't remember his name 357-7511

glad that I was not the only one who found him suspect,
I am sure any buys will require him delivering to meet with no recourse to find him later on

the grafted plants business is surely a big racket esp with price of limes last few years
my dad bought some "limes" last year and they turned out to be some kind of mini portugal, sour and useless.

the crooks are smart, they graft on branches which have flowered so you get the feeling that you will be reaping in no time at all.

I have seen avocado, citrus and mangoes bearing fruit while in pots in California.

They weren't special varieties. They were kept pruned.

Somebody sell my MIL a "large fruit lime tree" that refused to bear for 10 years, then bore 3 grapefuit last year, and then starting raining grapefruit this year. Gave away dozens of pink grapefruit

Boy I find grapefruit more consistent than oranges these days
Oranges does be real hit and miss, plenty more sour than grapefruit and most just average.
Plus if you making juice, you get a lot more out of grapefruit for the price too

WTK: My dad gave me a hybrid King Orange plant and it's been planted in my back yard about 3 or 4 years now. The only thing it bearing is picker.

It's been on bearing salts like 4 months now and it still yet to bear. Is it a fail or am I doing something wrong?

If it is grafted, usually a lemon branch is used as the start for the graft. So as the plant grows, you have the lemon growing as well as the orange. You need to keep cutting back the lemon stems to allow the graft to grow otherwise the lemon will take over. Were you doing this regularly? If not, you literally got a lemon on your hands there.

On a funny note, i had a few citrus in my yard, some not bearing after 6 years. A few years ago, i hit up the tree with a cutlass and talk to it real rough and threaten to cut it down. Next season, fruit start to bear. A small grap tho. Season after that, every day i picking 2 buckets of citrus... try that with the tree... old wifes tale that appears to work.

Might work , if pH is too high.

Soil pH for citrus supposed to be between 5.5 and 6.5

Proper test kits can be bought online, but I cheap so.....

DIY test: Collect 2 teaspoons of soil and put them into a plastic cup.
Add a half cup of vinegar to 1. if it fizzes, your soil is alkaline.

If not you have some other kind of problem
