Two portfolios. Looks like Gary was appointed COFP (Commissioner Of Fashion Police) as well.

Lots of Trinis about to be on the wrong side of the law.

Can we fix crime in Trinidad ?

While Politicians playing games , business people are being robbed and murdered .

So meanwhile, give the business people guns to provide safety for their family & property.

If you have a better solution - talk :D

I hope the business men & women who are lobbying for gun licenses are taking it upon themselves to become properly trained as several serious citizens are doing, and not sitting down waiting for a FUL because they feel that they are more intitled to one. I personally believe that Commissioner Griffith should firstly consider applicants who has over 6 months of firearms training on the shooting range before other applicants. It's only logical that the citizens who are investing their time and money regularly on the range are showing true delugence to earn gun licenses .

Most if not all business persons are trained abroad - they travel.

In Trini you cannot get a FUL like in the USA.

However Gary will approve or disapprove and then you can go to the Appeal - if necessary .

There is a certain ole people thinking within TTPS that citizens should not own guns to protect
property, family , business .

Griffith: One year to turn around TTPS

Rhondor Dowlat
Published: Saturday, September 1, 2018

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith said yesterday that in one-year’s time the Police Service will be more efficient and effective.

And President Paula-Mae Weekes said she intends to hold him to the deadline.

Griffith was speaking at the Independence Day function hosted by the T&T Police Service (TTPS) at Police Administration Building, in Port-of-Spain after the parade in the Queen’s Park Savannah.

In her debut visit to the TTPS’ Administration Building, to raise a toast to the nation, Weekes said that T&T is in a “slip of trouble” and urged all present to do their respective part to “reverse our present course.”

“I ask you please to go forward with boundless faith in our destiny, understanding fully that boundless faith without works could achieve absolutely nothing and there is no stagnant and static situation. If we are not going forward we will be going backwards,” Weekes said.

Moments before, Griffith, who was dressed in his ceremonial police uniform, assured that all will be done, “required by law,” to protect this country. He also assured “steadfast leadership, strategic management and accountability.”

“I would like to reveal a birthday gift to this nation…I give a promise to you today that one year from now, by God’s grace and will, by our 57th anniversary, the TTPS will be a more efficient and effective service,” Griffith said.

Also present at the reception were also Chief Justice Ivor Archie, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and his wife, Sharon, and the Minister of National Security Stuart Young.

…."by god's grace and will" , the TTPS will be more efficient and effective.
Personally I pray for God's support, but putting this on him is troubling.
I really hope the COP has a proper strategic plan with measureable objectives etc. which has the full support of the state and key stakeholders.

So I passed by Police headquarters yesterday and saw some 'hoi polloi' liming outside.

Only to realize later that the CoP had some big 'sawatee' drink up.

I thought by now someone would've mentioned what he said about FULs and some of you guys would be coc a hoop.

Basically he said the system was corrupt and don't pay anyone who promises they can expedite it etc, and he's gonna regulate it and look at every application on merit and issue relevant permits.

Said there a backlog of over 13000 pending applications .

Good luck ,hope he's able to screen and weed out the undesirables, proper honest police interviews and character checks can do well as was the case before everything had a cash price in T&T.

COMMISSIONER of Police Gary Griffith says there are 13,000 firearm licence applications pending.

And he intends to deal with every one of them.

The CoP was the feature speaker at a breakfast meeting hosted by the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC) at Signature Hall, Longdenville on Friday.

Griffith told the group of CCIC members and business men that he will adhere to the law in dealing with gun licence applications.

“There is a law and you all could probably look for it that states once you have all the criteria you can get a gun licence. I adhere to the law. I have no jurisdiction over that”, he said.

Griffith advised the group that there will be no external influence in the granting of gun licences.

“Do not pay a cent to anyone in the hope that your application will be at the top of the list”, he said.

He added that it will be mandatory for all those who received licences to go through relevant drills to be properly trained in the use of the firearm.

The top cop said that he knew that the TTPS “is not perfect”, and appealed for support for police officers.

“We have to understand and respect the law. How do you expect the TTPS to give support to you if you don’t give support to them? Think about police who give their lives to protect a stranger. I am prepared for my support to dwindle if the support for the TTPS can increase. We are not there but we are on the right track”, he said.

The commissioner said that he will attempt to weed out all rouge elements in the TTPS, and fight hard to guard the professionalism and respect of the TTPS.

He said the police were upgrading their customer service and encouraging people to join their Facebook page where they can and receive information, upload photos and videos.

Upon taking up the position of Commissioner of Police Griffith gave the public his cell phone number and advised people to text if they have information on any crime.

He said that he received hundreds of messages daily, but believes that “every bit of information is important”.

Griffith said that technology will be used to ensure police not abusing the use of the siren.

“I did not take this job to please everyone. I came to do what is right”, he said.

Also addressing the meeting were CCIC President Vishnu Charran, Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan, Chaguanas Member of Parliament Fazal Karim, and Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry of Agriculture Avinash Singh.

And the process does NOTHING to determine whether or not the applicant should be allowed to carry.

$50,000 bribe for gun licence – CoP tells applicants don’t pay a cent

COMMISSIONER of Police (CoP) Gary Griffith made the startling revelation to the Chaguanas Business Chamber yesterday that bribes at the going rate of $50,000 are being paid to police officers to fast-track applications for firearm user's licence (FUL).

As he addressed a breakfast meeting at Signature Hall, Chaguanas, Griffith urged businessmen who may be among the 13,000 applicants for a FUL not to pay a cent to get their application to the top of the list, as they would be wasting their money. He said the buck stops with him, and he would adhere to the law in deciding who is eligible.

Responding to businessman Aleem Khan during the question-and-answer session, Griffith said the law is clear on who is or is not eligible. He said it is not for him to deny a businessman or a civilian a FUL because of the fear the weapon may get stolen. Neither is it up to him to apply the New York model, under which an identification card and job letter could get an applicant a semi-automatic weapon because of that person’s right to bear arms.

Griffith said he intends to adhere to the law as it relates to FULs, which says once a person meets the criteria and has done all that is required, that person is eligible to be a firearm user.

“I will ensure that you get the FUL. Unfortunately, there are 13,000 applications for FUL –I have to prioritise. But the point is, this is what causes the element of corruption.”

Referring to exorbitant bribes to fast-track applications, Griffith warned, “Do not pay a cent to anyone in the hope that your file is going to be at the top of the list. What I am doing, based on prioritisation, based on the assessment threat, I am trying to pump it as quickly as possible.

“If all 13,000 individuals are eligible, I will approve all, if not, reject all.”

Griffith said he intends to deal with every single application within the next few months.

He also acknowledge there are bad seeds among the police who are tarnishing the image of the majority of good cops, and he intends to weed them all out.

He said the alleged involvement of two police officers in the kidnap of Natalie Pollonais has caused the public to make "nasty and most disgusting" comments about the entire police service.

He called on the public to spare a thought for the husbands, wives, parents and children of officers who put their lives on the line for strangers every day, the same officers who are called to deal with kidnapping, murder, robberies and other criminal matters.

Repeating his reference to these criminals as "cockroaches," for which he has been criticised, Griffith said the criticism was not "democracy" but hypocrisy'.

He referred to instances around the globe where police officers are being investigated or have appeared before the courts on charges ranging from sex crimes, kidnapping, hijacking, armed robberies, “but I have not heard one citizen (from these countries) say if this is what the police is doing I am not going to trust them. I am going to ignore them.

“We have to check ourselves and understand that the TTPS is not perfect. We have to understand and respect the law and those in authority. There is nothing to be gained by ridiculing the TTPS. I believe in constructive criticism, but how do you expect the TTPS to give their best to you if you are not giving support to them?” he asked.

The CoP praised the 200 officers involved in the rescue of Pollonais, who provided the intelligence, administration, logistics and operational support, without any ransom being paid. The police should be commended, he said.

"We are not there yet, but we are on the right track.”

Griffith said with his appointment, people are looking to him to change the game.

But, he said, “The game-changer is not me. The game-changer is not the TTPS. The game-changer is you (the public)."

He committed the service to providing a safe nation, with the public's support.
