A clash of sorts between two groups of indigenous people today and it's all because of Christopher Columbus.

Today the first people's held a peaceful march in Port of Spain but the Warao tribe, which has been lobbying for the removal of Christopher Columbus statue, included itself in the march and it turned into a heated debate.

Columbus statue to be removed from PoS, square to be renamed



THE Port of Spain City Council has decided to remove the bronze statue of Christopher Columbus from the nation's capital and rename Columbus Square.

The council plans to build a new monument to honour the victims of the subsequent genocide that the navigator's so-called "discovery" brought.

Speaking during the Kambule Street procession on August 1 to celebrate the 187th anniversary of the emancipation of African slaves, Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne announced the move, among several other recent decisions, to not only celebrate local heroes but to ensure that future generations are educated and inspired.

Alleyne said that in 1880, the bronze statue was gifted to the then Borough Council by a wealthy cocoa planter and merchant from Martinique, Hypolite Borde. He said the merchant paid for the refurbishment of an old, neglected cemetery, which is now known as Columbus Square. It was opened in 1881 by Governor Sir William Young as a memorial and tribute to the navigator. However, he said this must go for healing to occur.

"More than 140 years later, restoration and repair require that as we ensure that the yet-to-be-born revere our ancestors like Kwame Ture, we also ensure that they learn our colonial history in its most appropriate historical context. For that reason, the Council of the City of Port of Spain has taken the decision to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from Independence Square and to make it available to the National Museum and Art Gallery for display."

He said a committee will be set up to determine a new name for the square in honour of all of the victims of the genocide of indigenous peoples, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonialism. He said an art collective will also be created to come up with a new monument for the location.

"Ladies and gentlemen, a name is a powerful thing."

Additionally, he said the council also decided to rename part of Oxford Street, Port of Spain, as Kwame Ture Way to honour the pan-African revolutionary's contribution to the fight against institutional racism.

Alleyne said the National Trust already recognised Ture's birth home on Oxford Street as a heritage site, but the renaming was necessary to celebrate his contributions. Ture was born Stokely Carmichael on June 29, 1941.

"He was a monumental figure in the American civil rights and black power movements and a titan of the global pan-African movement. A leader on the road to restoration and repair alongside other ancestors like Martin Luther King Jr, Angela Davis, Malcolm X and Kwame Nkrumah, the first prime minister and president of Ghana. Kwame Ture once famously said that the job of the conscious is to make the unconscious conscious."

The portion of Oxford Street from Argyle Street to Charlotte Street will be renamed Kwame Ture Way.

"It is our hope that those yet to be born will grow up inspired by the work of this global pan-African hero from behind the bridge in Port of Spain."

Columbus statue in care of National Trust

THE Christopher Columbus statue was removed from the corner of Duncan Street and Independence Square on August 6, following an announcement by Port of Spain mayor Chinua Alleyne on August 1.

Its removal caused a sleepless but celebratory night for Cross Rhodes Freedom Project director Shabaka Kambon.

He was present at the site when Grand Chief of the First Natives Sovereign Nation Eric Lewis performed a smoke cleansing ceremony after the statue’s removal. That group also celebrated the removal on August 7.

The Port of Spain City Corporation said in a social media post on August 7 that following extensive discussions and technical assessment, the corporation successfully removed the Columbus statue last night from Independence Square.

“The exercise commenced at approximately 10 pm on August 6 to minimise traffic disruption in the capital city,” it said.

It added that the exercise was planned following an on-site technical assessment and further consultation on August 5.

“It was determined that the statue should be removed first, followed by the remaining parts of the monument. The discussions included representatives from several key stakeholder organisations including the Santa Rosa First People's Community, the Warao First People, the Caribbean Freedom Project, the National Trust and the Emancipation Support Committee TT.”

It was removed under “the careful guidance” of Heritage architect Rudylynn DeFour-Roberts and was now in the National Trust’s care, the statement said.

“As announced by mayor Alleyne on August 1 the statue will be made available to the National Museum and Art Gallery.

“This exercise represents phase one of the monument's removal. Further technical assessments will be conducted to determine the best way to safely remove the remaining parts of the monument.”

Lewis said they were not at the site to forget the ills against their ancestors but to reconcile and heal those ills by removal of things like the Columbus statue from the environment.

He added that Columbus’ story was important because it was a reminder of how easily people could be deceived. He suggested that a statue of indigenous chief Baucunar replace Columbus'.

Lewis said the group was pleased at how quickly the statue was removed and had planned to remove it before August 9 if it was not done.

“They hit the deadline before us because on August 9, we will be having our smoke ceremony at the Parliament and there is also going to be a nice smoke, cleaning and ancestral ceremony.

“With the removal of this, today is a day we can rejoice and be very happy that many groups and people have been fighting with and for us,” he said.

He said the late calypsonian and Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) Lutalo “Brother Resistance” Masimba was one of those who fought for this.

Kambon said this was fantastic and the group was up all night celebrating.

He said the group was still looking forward to seeing the many possibilities that could come out of this historic change.

He added that he hoped this would inspire other Caribbean countries particularly the Bahamas.

The Cross Rhodes Freedom Project has called on Bahamian authorities to fully pardon Shervandaze “Michael the Archangel” Smith who was convicted of causing damage after taking a sledgehammer to Columbus’ statue at the government house.

The group has promised to take legal action if the Bahamian government does not accede to its request.

But understand that they are not the only victims of the Europeans.
As for the comments about the non-pure descendants of the First People, you guys need to understand that the people were practically genocided and had to procreate with other races which included Spanish, African and Indian, possibly Chinese at this point too.Despite this, a recognizable community of them still exist where they practice their culture, religions,etc. and their identity is still strong. So much so that they are recognized by the wider regional community of Native Americans and the Caribbean.
I have personally interacted with a Payi or medicine man from a Santa Rosa tribe that has what we know as Carib ancestory. I suspect that I may have met more of them,as they carry a tell tale deer horn necklace pendant.They are still here.
Random fact. Chutney soca singer Chris Garcia is a descendant of the first people that is proud of his heritage.
