Well...banning Android boxes might lead to the proliferation of small, cheap HTPCs and NUCS.

Ever heard of the Intel Compute Stick?

All this talk is well and good but i think we need to do something more like come up with a petition or list of demands that we the people are willing to accept if they wanna ban Android boxes and force us to accept mediocrities. The line in the sand has been drawn and no one is on our side not the TATT and not the government. Don't know how much more of this sheit i could take nah, from outta hand crime to stifling one of the last few freedoms that i have. Last i checked this was supposed to be a democracy. Time to take that inner voice and make it loud!

Petitions ain't gonna do $heit.
it damaging their pockets so boycotts are the only real solution.....
But, sadly we in Trinidad where the pips is to show your neighbor that you can afford something they can't and you willing to go against the public tide because you can, so don't hold your breath for boycotts.

What the idiots don't realize is that when you piss off the same customers who using them for data
They will likely not take back service either way
So the profits not gonna suddenly reappear
If anything customers will leave.

Petitions changed the speed limit though.

Crime so high we stay inside and watch tv and they want to take that as from us as well.

Exactly. People have upgraded to higher speeds to use these so if they block it they will also downsize their broadband packages.

...and they will raise the prices of their broadband packages across the board to compensate. Then again people could probably shop around for better packages...if they could find one.

All things considered this is probably going to end with the customer getting screwed...:|

Most likely flow as they are the main tv provider and have seen the profits dwindle dramatically

ISPs considering blocking streaming websites

Joel Julien
Published:
Friday, June 15, 2018

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in this country are actively considering teaming up and blocking certain websites so customers will be prohibited from illegally streaming content.

Stephane David the Chief Programming Officer at Liberty Latin America/Flow said this is one of the solutions that the country’s Internet Service Providers are considering as an option to deal with the problems they are currently facing as a result of a proliferation of Android boxes.

The ISPs already have the software available to block the websites but are tentative about using that option if there is not consensus by all.

“We need the level of comfort that nobody is going to take us to court for us having blocked these streams and then we lose and then we go back ten years behind,” David explained during a conference titled Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement: Video Content Piracy hosted by Alianza at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain.

Annie Baldeo, of the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago said it was music to the ears of the Authority to hear the ISPs were willing to cooperate on this level.

Blocking of websites was previously attempted in Curacao by Flow but this was eventually reversed, Bernard Pantin the general manager of DirecTV.

The proliferation of Android boxes in this country has resulted in a drop in the revenue for paid television.

Revenue for paid television fell from $183 million in the last quarter of 2016 to $164 million in the first quarter of 2017.

Pantin estimated that there are 80,000 Android boxes currently in the country.

One avenue being proposed by TATT to address the issue is the possible banning of Android boxes being imported in the country. TATT has already drafted a consultation paper which is to be published by June 25.

Lol.. they really want to open this can of worms.. what is to stop Massy and courts etc from complaining that their revenue down due to Amazon and that ISPs need to block them..

They losing business due to their own incompetence.. they need to change/innovate instead of bitching to TATT.

None of this surprises me ... Politicians are missing out on all of this revenue they can skim and put in their respective pockets ... I am sure the ISP's have been monitoring traffic and know quite alot about peoples browsing habits this technology has been out there for a very long time.

Wont be long before the call for legislation to be introduced to mop up all of this lost tax revenue by blocking torrents, streaming websites, VOIP and even youtube (joking). These measures will go through parliament and the senate largely unopposed.

But crying and complaining about it doesnt doesnt solve the problem for me. The solution to these pending issues is obvious the solution is VPN.

TATT, why not just ban the internet?

THE EDITOR: The Newsday article on Wednesday by Carla Bridglal, titled “TATT to go after Android boxes,” needs a response.

Here are a few reasons why the TATT claims are severely flawed: The first is the claim that Android boxes are the only devices people use to watch streaming media from the internet. Any teenager with an Android smartphone, iPhone or PC/laptop running Windows/MacOS/Linux with a web browser would beg to differ.

The primary app on these boxes is called Kodi and it’s available freely on the Web. There are versions for every operating system, not just Android, in popular use. Apart from that there’s also Terrarium TV, Movies HD, Mobdro and TapTV, to name a few free apps freely available on the Web.

Alternately, non-streaming apps like BitTorrent have been free, around for many years, extremely reliable and growing in popularity. Many legitimate software and entertainment providers use this platform to distribute their digital content.

Even without a dedicated streaming app there are websites like Putlocker, Xmovies8 and Movies123 that are accessible with web browsers like FireFox and Chrome.

There are alternate but entirely legal sources of online entertainment: Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, to name three.

These services are accessible from the devices mentioned before like smartphones and PCs but also smart TVs with the legal streaming apps built in. None of which is being taxed at this time.

The article states, “The Telecommunications Authority will begin consultations for the regulation of Android boxes next week, after lobbying by subscription television providers.”

Hopefully the consultations would take the points mentioned above into consideration and just ban the internet.
