Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat is advising citizens against visiting the Devil's Wood Yard mud volcano which erupted in the early hours on Tuesday.

The Rural Development and Local Government Ministry has been working with the Disaster Management Unit of the Princes Town regional Corporation to secure the site.

Rambharat said that three homes have been evacuated, and there are cracks on the road.

He said that the area was now being monitored for seismic activity and the UWI's Geological Society is involved.

Rambharat said there was still seismic activity at the site and the size of the mud flow was growing.

As of daybreak, it had spread about 150 feet.

The first recorded eruption of the mud volcano happened in 1852 and again about 20 years ago.

Since then it has remained dormant, with small cones emitting mud and gas over the years.

i would like to get a full gaseous spectrum analysis done... im just interested in what is here. cause we dont have lava volcanoes, but we do have mud and pitch. so that would be interesting.. to know why we are different.

Update on Volcanic Activity at the Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is closely monitoring the volcanic activities at the Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano in New Grant, Princes Town following three (3) confirmed eruptions. The eruptions resulted in mud spewing out approximately 100 metres in width and 6 metres in height.

After continuous assessments of the site this afternoon, the UWI Seismic Research Centre has declared the Devil’s Woodyard Site as dormant.

Eight (8) families with a total of forty (40) persons were initially evacuated from the eastern side of the site. The UWI Seismic Research Centre and the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) are on site conducting assessments. UWI Seismic Research Centre has indicated that the flammability level is low. The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) conducted air quality tests and has found no increased toxicity in the area. Therefore, affected residents would be allowed to return to their homes.

The ODPM has received no reports of injury or structural damage to property at this time. To maintain public safety and security, the Hindustan Road in New Grant will remain closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic except to persons who reside in the area. Citizens and tourists are advised to avoid visiting the area until there is official word by the relevant authorities.

The ODPM, the Municipal Police of the Princes Town Regional Corporation, Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS), the Senior Disaster Management Coordinator of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (MORDLG) and the Disaster Management Unit of the Princes Town Regional Corporation, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) are closely monitoring the site to ensure the safety and security of residents and citizens.

Was thinking about its use for agricultural purposes, if not as a full-on planting medium at least as a soil amendment. Peppers and tomatoes like themselves a touch of sulphur throughout their life-cycle.

At the end of the day, these kinds of geological processes are hard to predict, so it's anyone's guess.

All we know is, there was a lot of earthquakes in the region. so like a something broke and allow a Lil bit more heat to reach under the mud volcano.
