This is why I continue to say that our food import bill isn't high...The food is cheap. It is the mark-up and profits taken by the food importers that is exorbitant. Somebody embed this video for me please.
The price of milk is so cheap in Europe that farms are closing down. After being exported to Africa etc, the price of yogurt produced by BIG brands in Europe is .33 euros which is about $2.60tt. Yogurt produced in Cameroon etc cost about 37 cents (euros). Cameroon is considered a poor, poor country. These products also need to be transported using diesel etc and still hitting the shelves at $2.60tt etc.
The truck takes 2 days from the port to the supermarket and the price is still .33 cents (euros). Yogurt in Trinidad costs around 9- 11 tt dollars?
Another thing....Powdered milk was originally made as a substitute for cow's milk to feed calves. Powdered milks is mainly exported to the developed world. It is hardly consumed domestically in european countries. The only consume fresh milk products. Powdered milk is our main source of dairy. Supermarkets are essentially providing us with animal feed for consumption. The powdered milk that we hold in such high demand is basically scooped out of buckets as raw material to make yogurt in Africa.
TIME WE WAKE UP.....!!!
