I think after 1 year it's mandatory to do over the test. However as noted above in TT if you have a contact at licensing it could potentially be done. You should go down this week early and see as it shouldn't be too busy because either way you have to fill out forms etc.

IIrc, dp renewal fees are staged in 6 month increments. 6-12 months expired cost to renew is $800 & it goes up from there. Past 3 years expired, you will most likely have to retake your regulations & driving test.

But there's a possible work around if you possess a valid dp from where you were. Let them know that you were actively driving in whatever country you returned from, show them the valid dp issued there. Iirc there's a provision for this type of thing.

i believe you may renew up to 30 days before expiry.

^ Shouldn't be a problem. I renewed mine this year in PoS three weeks before it expired. Even got back my three weeks for the new expiration date.

From my last visit to LO (maybe 2 years ago), you can renew up to 5 years at certain incremental cost. Over five years is complete do over.

it has a fee attached to early renewal .... try chaguanas u can get it renewed in less than 1 hr

How long do I have until I have to pay extra? and how long until I have to retake the whole test etc?

Do I have to renew it this week or I can wait a couple months without having penalty? how long does it take to get through in Caroni? thats the closest location to me.

Yes you can renew . You will have to retake the "written test" .
Not the "driving test."

OP, take travel documents to the new licensing office in Caroni.
The facilities and demur of the staff is excellent. Any problems
just politely as for an officer to review.

Documents are your passport or any other that shows you were abroad
for 5 years .
