ONE man is dead after finding himself in difficulty while bathing at Macqueripe beach in west Trinidad yesterday afternoon.
The deceased has since been identified as Stefan Grant.
Grant died at hospital close to one hour after he was pulled from the waters by other beachgoers after he jumped from a jetty into the sea before showing signs of distress, said witnesses.

The witnesses told TV6 News that sometime around 2 p.m., Grant, who appeared to be in his 20s, lay on the beach for close to half hour while Emergency Health Services (EHS) attempted to resuscitate him.
There were no lifeguard on duty at the time they said. The witnesses said after the failed attempt by EHS personnel to resuscitate Grant, he was later taken to St James District Hospital but subsequently died.
It was suspected that Grant may have struck his head or some other part of his body against some rocks after jumping from the jetty.
An autopsy is expected to be performed at Forensic Science Centre in St James today to determine the actual cause of death.

^^Ive been there twice in past 6 weeks and the only 'current' they have is where there is the slight dropoff and people tend to lose their footing (which is not current per se)

Big sign saying don't pass this point yet people still climbing round and jumping off ole jetty rocks etc..many with limited swimming skills...hence the reason I only go during the week, more responsible oldies like me there.

What happened to the lifeguard hut that was there? The area was pretty impressive just a couple of years ago.

You are the best life guard you could ever have.

Just after the gravel. That water pushing you back to the shore and pulling back out. I've never felt anything like that in my life going to the beach. I'm 6ft and almost neck high water pushing me like that is damn scary.

Yeah Macqueripe is scary yet nice. With regards to the lifeguard issue, it is possible that there are not enough to be rostered. Also if you put one person on a beach there will still need to be about a hundred more. A needs analysis was done before but no action.

News said the guy drowned after jumping off the platforms on the right side, must have been some mishap associated with that as opposed to current etc.

I have snorkelled many times there, after the initial little drop off the bay is basically flat right through the middle
No rip tides or currents like maracas or other north coast beaches with waves.
