People of Trinidad and Tobago

Chandra Maharaj- Shamla's mother.

"People see Shamla out in a wheelchair and assume all kinds of things.

They think she can’t answer questions or understand what’s being said and so if we are together they speak to me instead.

I just say “Ask her; she can speak for herself.” It happens all the time. Strangers ask, “Is she sick?” No, she is not sick, she uses a wheelchair. “Is she crippled? Shamla jumps in to say “Do they know what crippled means? Disability does not mean sickness.

We are like all mothers and daughters – we go clothes shopping but we almost always argue in the shops. I suggest things but Shamla wants what she wants. She says “I am a young girl. Things you like, I won’t like, let me define myself. I’m sure you used to like choosing your own clothes when you were younger”.

When she was born, you didn’t see people out with disabilities. Her father said right from the beginning that she had to get an education and work like anyone else. I remember when she was supposed to enter Secondary School, the Principal said she couldn’t be registered. I banged on the desk and demanded that she attend school.

When her friends were applying to UWI she decided to try as well. She was accepted and we made it work. I stayed in Halls with her for the three years .

We came home at weekends and sometimes in between. If her father and I didn’t think like that she would have been home staring at a TV today.

She has to work and have a life and be independent.

Now, if people stare at her, I say “Shamla they are staring because you are beautiful not because you are in a wheelchair”.

Local Henry 'Tooloom' Dindial

A Trinidad Thumri by Henry ‘Tooloom’ Dindial, who hailed from South Trinidad in the 1940s and 1950s.

He created a distinguished orthodox style of classical singing with a modern rythmic beat and syncopation that appealed greatly to the younger generation.

Apart from this, he was an accomplished harmonium player and his versatility on this instrument was highly applauded wherever he appeared.

Local Medicinal Herbs ~ Lemongrass

Benefits of Lemongrass

You can peel off the rough, papery covering of the lower stalk to reveal a white stem. Slice this into small pieces for cooking in stir fry or you can,as I do, keep it in larger pieces and add to soups. Just remove the stalk before eating if it is a larger piece.

The leaves can be cut into small pieces and dried for teas. ***Be careful, the leaves when fresh are a bit sharp to handle!***

Benefits of Lemongrass:

#1 – Insect repellent – the essential oil is excellent as a repellent to mosquitos.

#2 – The essential oils are relaxing and uplifting at the same time so use it topically as an infused oil or drink a cup of this aromatic tea.

#3 – Add the essential oil to skin salves as an analgesic and an antibacterial property.

#4 – Good for clear skin with its astingent properties – use in acne formulas

#5 – Helpful for headaches and nervousness.

#6 – In Ayurvedic medicine a preparation of lemon grass with pepper has been used for relief of menstrual troubles and nausea.

#7 – Lemon grass is a mild diuretic and a digestive stimulant that promotes digestion of fats.

#8 – And because it just tastes so darn good.

#9 – JUST found this one out – plant all around your chicken coop or house to keep snakes away

To Grow:

Cymbopogon citratus is a perennial grass that can be grown either in the garden or as an indoor (or outdoor) potted plant.

It thrives in warm weather (it does not do well in extremely cold climates), grows from two to four feet tall, and — when used as a background for other plants — can add a tropical touch to the garden.

Lemongrass seldom bears seeds and is almost always propagated from a section of root.

That propagation, however, is easy: The plant thrives on nothing more than a sunny spot, rich soil, and plenty of water.

Mix equal parts of:

lemongrass

Lemon balm

lemon verbena

Take two teaspoons and add 8-10 oz boiling water, steep covered 10-15 minutes.

Local Vicks Vapo Rub

12 Surprising Uses for Vicks Vapo Rub

Vicks is an age-old mentholated topical cream intended to relieve head, throat, and chest stuffiness – but did you know it can do more than relieve chest congestion?

Vicks Vapo Rub has been around for over 100 years and is one of the most widely used over-the-counter decongestants. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about unique and unconventional ways to use this odiferous ointment. You’ll be surprised to learn that Vicks is a supposed treatment for so much more than just a congested chest. .

1. Decongest Your Chest

The most common use of Vicks is to decongest your chest and throat area. When applied to the upper chest, it provides excellent relief of cough and congestion symptoms.

2. On Your Tootsies
Applying Vicks to your feet provides nighttime cough relief. Generously rub VapoRub all over your feet and cover them with socks. Within moments your cough will subside—in the morning you’ll wake up a new, hacking free woman.

3. Achy Breaky Muscles
Vicks relieves sore, overworked muscles. It increases circulation and provides almost instant aid. Use a generous portion and apply it all over the aching area. (Be sure to warn your bedmate as the stench can ensure a nookie-free night.)

4. Get Rid of Nasty Nail Fungus
Rub VapoRub on your toenails if you suspect you have a fungus. Within days, the nail will turn dark—this means the Vicks is killing the fungus. As your toenail grows out, the dark part will grow off and you will have fungus-free feet. Keep applying the ointment over a period of two weeks to fully cleanse nail beds of any remaining bacteria.

5. Stop Your Cat from Scratching
Cats are notorious for scratching every hard surface they get their claws on. To prevent Miss Kitty from ruining your doors, walls, and windows, apply a small amount of VapoRub to these areas. Cats detest the smell and will steer clear. Vicks can also be applied to your arms and legs if your kitty is prone to scratching you.

6. Pet Pee-Pee Deterrent
If your dog or cat is not yet potty trained, put an open bottle of Vicks on the area he or she likes to mark as their territory. The smell will discourage them from lifting their legs and wetting your rug.

7. Headaches Be Gone
Rub a small amount of Vicks VapoRub on your temples and forehead to help relieve headaches. The mentholated scent will release pressure in your head and instantly relieve pain.

8. Humidify Your Sleep
Vicks VapoRub can be used in special types of humidifiers and vaporizers. Ensure your humidifier has an aromatherapy compartment before using. The humidifier will circulate Vicks throughout the air and keep you breathing easy all night long.

9. Paper Cuts and Splinters
To prevent infection and speed up healing time, dab a small amount of Vicks on any small cut or splinter.

10. Ticks and Bugs
If you get bitten by a tick, apply Vicks immediately. The strong odor might help get the critter to release itself and stop bugging you.

11. Reek-free Racehorses
Professional racers smother VapoRub under the nostrils of racehorses on race day. The strong stench deters the stallions from the alluring odor of the female pony and keeps them focused on the race.

12. Go Away Mosquitoes
Vicks wards off mosquitoes. Apply small dabs of Vicks VapoRub to your skin and clothes and mosquitoes will steer clear. If you do get bitten, apply Vicks to the area and cover it with a Band-Aid to relieve itching.

According to WebMD, there have been a few complications in children when Vicks is used inappropriately. A few children reacted negatively and ended up hospitalized when Vicks was applied directly under the nose. Though this is extremely rare and only happens to those who are sensitive to Vicks, consumers should use caution when applying it to the face or on young children.

Local Parrot

"We had made arrangements with Wildlife Section to release the little Red-Bellied Macaw, Ara manilata, and a day this week was set. She had been brought to us as an impounded partly feathered baby and since there were no feathers yet on her breast we were unable to determine her sex.

She grew to be a beauty and a truly amazing little person with a spunky character and intense curiosity. She had been a good buddy to the Blue and Gold Macaw who was younger but eventually out-grew her in size. They were often seen grooming each other, that is, she grooming him on demand (his demand)!!!! They slept side by side on a high perch in the canopy of the flight cage, dry and away from draughts. Of course, like all the macaw family she was NOISY.

We were supposed to rendez vous with the Wardens at a designated place in the east, at 6 a.m.!!!!!
(Catch the bird, load the car, remember the water, secure the dogs, medicate the patients, feed the people in the flight cages, take my hat......) We left at 6.30am.

The traffic was standing so the Morne Coco road over the hill seemed a good option and was a breeze until the crest of the mountain. Looking down there was the familiar, interminable pattern of hoods in every shape and colour disappearing into the distance, and there was no turning back. Nearly an hour later the Maraval road loomed ahead. This seemed the cause of the block. Meanwhile the little person in the back had freaked out twice necessitating a stop and covering the carrier with a heavy towel.

Santa Cruz seemed the best choice until the village... Once again we were stuck and it was all heading for San Juan. It was'nt until we reached Calvary Hill turn-off that we were able to move freely, but by now it was 8.30am. Stuck in all that traffic, it seemed a pleasant thought to call Rea and, if she were free, and lived in the east, invite her to join us.

Reaching the meeting point exasperated and p....d-off, we were met by smiles and cheery faces, and snacks being passed out. I donated my two hard boiled eggs. We parked our cars and having heatedly discussed a plan to locate the troupes of Red-Bellied macaws, set off on foot. Heather Dawn Herrera had come with the Wardens armed with her camera.

The environment was amazing, but the day was really hot, and it was so late by now that the birds had retired to the seclusion of the deep forest. We followed several trails without seeing or hearing them and eventually took refuge, like the birds, in a patch of heavy forest where we slumped, already tired and dehydrated against tree trunks. The first thing to impinge on the senses was the intensity of the silence...we were surrounded by the incredible beauty of the forest, and the silence.

Noticing the plants growing around us was source of delight, and fortunately, we were accompanied by a Forrester, Mr. Edmund Charles, who is very knowledgeable and was happy to identify what we were looking at.

Finally it was 1pm.and we had to make a decision about the release. I insisted that she should be released in the presence of her kind since she had not associated with them since she was taken from her nest, but she would recognise their language. Though she had been fed many of the wild fruits that she would find, she had not seen them in their environment and she would have to take her ques from the other people of her kind. SO we had two choices: to abort and set another day, or, to wait through the afternoon until the birds emerged for their afternoon feed. We chose the latter but Edmund had to leave us.

By 4pm. we gathered up out kit and started out into the open. As we reached the clearing we heard the distinctive call of a Red Bellied Macaw in the forest behind us. Rea squeeled, and suddenly we felt that the arduous wait had been rewarded.

We went into the open following the calls and after much trekking and back-tracking. the Warden suggested that we might try taking the Macaw out of the carrier, in the hope that she would locate the calls and her people. She immediately jumped onto my shoulder and with delighted chattering watched as we continued down a trail. I picked berries as we passed and having tried them myself, gave them to her.

They were very acceptable. A sudden noise behind us and she took off in a fright, flying like a bullet ahead of us along the trail and then swerving in the direction of the forest where we heard the first call..

In a hurry we continued out into the open and circled towards the location where we assumed she had gone. We stood and watched. Minutes later we saw the first flocks circling into the tall Moriche palms in the area. We noticed her take off from a tree and land a distance away in the forest . She could see us but made no attempt to come back. With a pang of sadness I knew she had gone, but this is how it should be, she was in her own environment, with her kind, and it was for this that we had been preparing her.

Moving into an open area we sat down on the ground, now shaded by the long shadows of late afternoon, and watched the activities of the small flocks as they came and went, against the background of an incredibly beautiful evening sky."

Wow, no bump on this thread in over a year!

I have a YouTube Channel where I mainly do vlogs of places I visit.

I have also done some videos that are Trini themed and would like to get some CONSTRUCTIVE feedback.
Keep in mind I am not a pro and most of the editing I do I learnt on YouTube.

Here is one of our National Flag:

Here is one on Trini Slang:

So look around and if you like what you see, a lil' Subscribe go be nice.
