I vaguely remember Deyalsingh saying that unkept properties that harbour mosquitoes and facilitate their reproduction can be fined $3500.00.

11th person confirmed with Zika

Published on Apr 7, 2016, 11:17 am AST
By Carolyn Kissoon

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that two more people have been diagnosed with the Zika virus.

This brings the total number of confirmed Zika cases in Trinidad to 11. There are no confirmed cases in Tobago.

The Health Ministry stated that the two new cases are located in Oropouche and Barataria and appear to have been locally acquired.

A release stated that both patients presented with a rash, fever and generalised body pains.

The ministry confirmed that the Insect Vector Control Division; County Medical Officers of Health for St. Patrick and St. George West; the Siparia Regional Corporation and the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation were informed and field work has commenced.

On January 29, the country declared a national health emergency over the mosquito-borne Zika virus, with Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh saying that the virus posed a clear threat to Trinidad and Tobago. He warned pregnant women to protect themselves from the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes.

On Feb 17, Delaysingh confirmed the first case of the mosquito borne virus contracted by a 61-year-old female who had recently travelled to New Zealand.

Two weeks later there were reports the a mother and daughter has also contracted the virus from Gulf View, La Romaine.

The Health Ministry renewed its call for citizens to take steps to prevent the infection of themselves and their loved ones.

Citizens were advised to:

1. Dispose of all unwanted containers/items in the yard or environs which can collect water and become mosquito breeding grounds. 2. Cover water containers such as barrels, drums or buckets with a mosquito proof covering.

3. Ensure that your drains and guttering allow the free flow of water.

4. Empty and scrub the sides of water vases or use dirt or sand instead to support flowers.

5. Cover extremities when out in the evenings.

6. Use bed nets that are tightly tucked under the mattress for protection at night.

7. Use insect repellent that contains DEET as an active ingredient.

Zika causes rare microcephaly, other severe birth defects, CDC concludes
AP/AFP-JIJI

NEW YORK/MIAMI – U.S. health officials say there’s no longer any doubt that the Zika virus causes severe birth defects.

Experts had been cautious about making a definitive link despite a surge of babies born with a rare birth defect in Brazil during a Zika outbreak. The virus is mainly spread by mosquitoes, and no mosquito-borne virus had ever been known to cause birth defects.

But on Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there’s enough evidence now to declare Zika the cause of a birth defect called microcephaly (my-kroh-SEF’-uh-lee) and other brain abnormalities.

CDC officials said their advice to pregnant women won’t change. Pregnant women should avoid traveling to places where the Zika virus is spreading, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Zika virus-linked birth defects include a syndrome in which babies are born with unusually small heads, U.S. health authorities confirmed Wednesday after months of debate and uncertainty.

“Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have concluded, after careful review of existing evidence, that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects,” said a statement from the federal agency.

The decision was based in part on a series of studies in Brazil, where thousands of babies were born last year with birth defects, coinciding with a spike in Zika virus infections among the general public.

“This study marks a turning point in the Zika outbreak,” said CDC chief Tom Frieden.

“It is now clear that the virus causes microcephaly.”

There was no “smoking gun,” or single piece of evidence that offered conclusive proof, said the full report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Rather, the decision was made based on “increasing evidence from a number of recently published studies and a careful evaluation using established scientific criteria,” said the CDC.

Further studies are being launched to “determine whether children who have microcephaly born to mothers infected by the Zika virus is the tip of the iceberg of what we could see in damaging effects on the brain and other developmental problems,” Frieden added.

So we can go to jail if we don't let someone enter our property ?
I don't have a problem with them entering my property to check anything but jeez...a fine seems to be more appropriate instead of jail.

They're supposed to show proper ID before entering.
Had a pair that came by me, no ID, insisted on coming in the yard and then end up asking me how much bedrooms, tanks, bathrooms etc i have in d house. :|

Figured it to be that when they asked.

Weird how they only asked me and no one else in the street.

Health inspectors have in their possession ID from min of health or local authority............THe ID that must be showed to enter, is in the form of a little blue hard cover book the size of a credit card, stamped on the cover in GOLD WRITING is the coat of arms and the words IDENTITY CARD AND WARRANT when you open the book there are about 3 pages the last page contains the photo of the bearer.. if the person does not have this call ttps and inform the inspector of your action, inspectors should be in uniform .

Bedrooms and bathrooms are irrelevant questions unless you have a business that needs inapection or a complaint of public health concern. Other than that premises inspection is strictly external environmental unless otherwise stated by the legitimate inspector

This could be the first of many.

Remember it takes 9 months, so it's to monitor the situation.
