It gets worse. Allegations left right and centre and yet no mention of anyone even brought in for questioning.

SEVEN prison officers, including a member of the Prison Service executive, are facing suspension following last week Friday's jailbreak in Port of Spain.

The action follows a meeting yesterday between the Ministry of Justice and the prison administration.

It is expected that the files of the seven officers will be passed on to the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine whether charges will be laid against them for their role in the prison break, which left a policeman dead and created chaos in the city.

Two of the escapees were also killed in the drama that ensued.

Information on the imminent suspensions was disclosed yesterday by president of the Prison Officers Association Ceron Richards.

On Friday, July 24, Allan “Scanny” Martin, Hassan Atwell and Christopher “Monster” Selby staged a jailbreak from the prison on Frederick Street, Port of Spain.

The three acquired firearms and a hand grenade and shot their way out of the prison. One of the men then threw the grenade in the direction of a nearby police vehicle, but the grenade did not go off.

Police Constable Sherman Maynard, who was on patrol with another officer outside the prison, was killed as the men shot their way to freedom.

“Scanny”, 42, who was among 12 men charged with the murder of Xtra Foods CEO Vindra Naipaul-Coolman, was shot dead during an exchange of gunfire with police officers at the entrance of the Port of Spain General Hospital during which a security officer, Anita Bartholomew, was injured.

The freedom of two other prisoners—Atwell and Selby—was also short-lived: Atwell was found shot dead during the early hours of Sunday morning on the compound of the Servol Sunshine Hill Life Centre at Calvary Hill, East Dry River; while Selby gave himself over to officers of the Barataria Police Station.

Sad day for prison officers

Following last week's prison break, Commissioner of Prisons Sterling Stewart promised there would be a thorough investigation into the incident and that if charges were to be laid, then so be it.

Richards was of a similar view.

He said yesterday: “It is always a sad day in the prison service when these things (suspensions) happen, but the reality was that on Friday something terrible happened and when something like that happens there will be consequences.

“The Prison Officers Association went on record to say that we always needed to support this initiative (investigation) because the prison service exists for the public and therefore the public's interests must be served.”

He added “it is likely that rogue prison officers were involved in the prison break and they should be brought to justice and face the full brunt of the law”.

Earlier this week as well, Richards was quoted as saying in an interview with the Express: “It is hard to believe that they (rogue prison officers) were not involved. Those inmates shoot their way from inside the prison to outside, almost killing a number of officers and killing a police officer in the process.

“These officers who are allegedly involved must be dealt with the full brunt of the law. This matter must not be swept under the carpet because that will be a slap in the face to all citizens in this country.”

helping a prisoner to escape is a crime , will the prisoner escapes a murder was committed and as a result of this 1st crime anyone who aids in a crime and a murder is committed should be charged with murder as well but it looks like that law does not apply to T&T.

Suspension with pay is usually worse. Implies strong guilt and employer knows you gonna get d chop.

As for being dismissed one time well better to follow the rules n investigate properly so no one is slipped thru the cracks. Not following rules gets us more trouble than bending them and having knee jerk reactions.

At least the union said words in support of the investigation,
Quite unlike the police union on the total policing day.

It will be hard to prove unless somebody squeal.
But surely the innocent police officers should be concerned that they couldve been killed because of their rogue coworkers.

Surely they could get charged with "accessory to murder" at least.

TEN charges, including that of murdering PC Sherman Maynard during a daring midday prison break in Port of Spain on July 24, were read to prison escapee Christopher “Monster” Selby when he appeared in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar presided over the hearing in the Eighth Magistrate's Court.

This, under the watchful eyes of several police officers who earlier brought Selby, 30, to the courthouse from Central Police Station on St Vincent Street.

Some of Selby's relatives were also present in court during the hearing.

A section of the street directly outside the courthouse was barricaded. This prevented the flow of vehicular traffic along the roadway for the duration of time Selby was in the building.

He, along with Allan “Scanny” Martin, 42, and Hassan Atwell, 41, escaped from the Remand Prison on Frederick Street two Fridays ago.

Shortly after their escape, Martin, who was an accused in the Vindra Naipaul-Coolman murder trial, was shot dead by police in a security booth at the Port of Spain General Hospital, a short distance away from the jail.

Atwell was said to be murdered by members of the Rasta City gang in Port of Spain the following night.

Two days after the escape, Selby surrendered himself to officers of the Barataria Police Station.

He was brought to court around 9.30 a.m. by officers attached to the Court and Process Branch but was not taken before the Chief Magistrate until shortly before noon.

The charges

As he stood in the prisoners' dock, Ayers-Caesar read the charges which alleged:

“On Friday July 24, 2015, at the Port of Spain Prison located at 103A Frederick Street, Port of Spain, you together with others:

1. Did murder PC Sherman Maynard;

2. Had in your possession a firearm, not being the holder of a Firearm User's Licence;

3. Did unlawfully commit the act of common assault on (prison officer) Kerron Prime;

4. Did unlawfully commit the act of common assault on (prison officer) Jean Marc Hernandez;

5. Did unlawfully commit the act of common assault on (prison officer) Nicholas Singh;

6. Did shoot at (prison officer) Leon Grouse with intent to do grievous bodily harm;

7. Did shoot at (police officer) Tisean Francis with intent to do grievous bodily harm;

8. Did escape lawful custody;

9. At New Street, Port of Spain, and being armed with a firearm robbed Javid Ramcharitar of a Nissan Navara van valued at $200,000;

10. Being armed with a firearm, robbed the State of Trinidad and Tobago of two keys together valued at $140.:lol: :lol: :lol:

Selby was not called upon to plead to any of the charges as they were all laid indictably.

However, defence attorney Criston J Williams, who, along with Darryl Worrel appeared for the accused, submitted that even though the charges were indictable, he wished to “adopt a particular course” on the charge of escaping lawful custody.

That charge, he said, could be heard either indictably or summarily.

He called on police prosecutor Insp Winston Dillon to make a recommendation for the charge to be summarily heard, for Selby to plead guilty and have a plea in mitigation entered on his behalf.

In response, Dillon said: “At this point I am not in a position to assist counsel.”

Dillion said he was not willing to make any recommendations on any of the charges, given that the matters had to be referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for guidance.

He further added that eventually a State attorney from the DPP's Office will have to be appointed to prosecute Selby. Based on this, he said, he could not make any decision on how the matters go forward.

Selby was remanded into custody at the Frederick Street jail and will next return to court on September 1.
