Police who were stuck in the mid-afternoon traffic in Port-of-Spain yesterday ended up being in the right place at the right time as they saved the life of a woman who for years had suffered abuse at the hands of her estranged husband. The officers shot Christopher Reid to death after he pulled a gun on Chinales Thomas along Duke Street. According to police reports, around 2.40 pm Reid was seen fighting with Thomas, his former wife, along Duke Street, near Henry Street corner.

During the fight Reid, 45, of Second Caledonia, Morvant, pulled out a gun and placed it to Thomas’ head. However, the driver of an unmarked police vehicle, who was stuck in traffic, jumped out of the car and shot Reid. Police said Reid was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. According to eyewitnesses, Thomas had only minutes before left Pancho’s Snackette on Henry Street, where she has been employed for the past two months. She and another woman were walking down Henry Street when Reid came out of hiding and grabbed her.

Witnesses said Reid attempted to force Thomas into a waiting car but she refused and began fighting with him. During the fight, men at a nearby bar sought to intervene but were stopped short when Reid pulled out a gun and pointed it at Thomas’ head. Thomas’ friend became frantic and sought help from someone. But almost at the same time, the police came and rescued Thomas.

“I give the police full respect. The police man just jump out and hit him (Reid). I hear about five shots,” one man who wished not to be identified told the T&T Guardian. An employee at Pancho’s, who did not want to be identified, told the T&T Guardian Thomas suffered years of abuse during the 20 years she was with Reid.

Reid, the woman said, would stalk Thomas and beat her whenever and wherever he could. The woman said during the last such incident Thomas was beaten with a hammer. Thomas, however, did not escape unhurt as eye witnesses said she was grazed on the head by the police officer’s bullet and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The T&T Guardian was told that on Tuesday Reid had telephoned Thomas and accused her of being unfaithful. Thomas, the T&T Guardian was told, had recently applied to the police for a restraining order. Up to last evening she was being interviewed by police.

4 cops charged

In an unrelated incident, four police officers attached to the St Joseph station have been charged with two counts of misbehaviour in public office and the mistreatment of a prisoner. The officers, constables Dave Ramkissoon, 37, Sean Hutchinson, 29, Gary John, 26, and Aquilan Baptiste, 26, were charged by officers from the Professional Standards Bureau under ACP Harrikrishen Baldeo and Ag Supt Gregory Renwick, following an incident at the station on August 30. They are to appear in the Tunapuna Magistrates Court today.

While deadly force had to be used.was it necessary to fire five shots?? more so its unfortunate that she got grazed...i would really hope that this incident is looked at and used as a training tool for new officers. maybe the incident could have been dealt with a bit better...

While i understand that we all are happy that the perpetrator got put down..that kind of behaviour could have killed her as well.. worst yet if the man had shot back just as an reflex to getting shot..someone else could have gotten hurt...all i am saying is that our officers need to know how to diffuse situations with the least amount of risk possible..it is human lives at stake.

So i reiterate good job Officer..but the incident should be looked at and used as an training tool to guide officers in similar situations..

Oh some of you may not know this but that is actually a Taxi stand, where children, senior citizens pass to get transportation...it is not a lonely street with only the three parties involved.... I am just voicing a concern that can make Trinidad safer for us all...WHO vex could make a spin and F#@k off

Good points Moses. But they can't take a chance with a gun. Suppose he shot at her? Wouldn't he also put bystanders at risk.
I think it would be easier to try to diffuse a situation if it does not involve a gun or if it is a person trying to take their own life.

Santa Cruz IF you live by the gun, you will die by the gun because when fired upon police officers will respond with equal force. That was the message sent by Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association president Insp Anand Ramesar in an interview with the Express yesterday, after two men were killed in a shoot-out with the police in Santa Cruz on Thursday night. Around 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, two men went to the home of a prominent businessman at Rampersad Trace, Monroe Road, in Cunupia. The men went under the pretence they were employees of the Ministry of Health and produced identification cards as such. However, after they were allowed onto the compound, they pulled two firearms and announced a hold-up. Everyone in the house was bound and tied, and the assailants brought in two more men. The four individuals then robbed the occupants of the home of a large quantity of cash, several electronic items, CCTV cameras and a recording system, a safe, computers, and cellular phones. They then escaped in a white Nissan Tiida. The occupants of the house were able to free themselves and the police were notified. An all-points bulletin (APB) was issued and officers from the Central Division, led by Snr Supt Johnny Abraham with assistance from Insp Terrence Williams and Sgt Jitindra Tooleram, responded. After conducting enquiries, the officers received information that a vehicle of similar make and people of similar descriptions given in the APB were in a house at First Street, Sun Valley Drive, Santa Cruz. The lawmen went to that location around 6.30 p.m. and attempted to surround the house. However, before they could properly secure the scene they heard several loud explosions. The officers took cover and returned fire. A man was then seen running from the house with a machine gun in his hands. He escaped the scene by continuously firing on the police while running further up the roadway. By the time the shooting had stopped, three men were seen on the property, all bleeding from gunshot injuries. The three men were taken to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope by the officers. However, on arrival, one man was pronounced dead and another died while undergoing emergency surgery. The third man was stabilised by doctors and is expected to make a full recovery. While up to press time the identities of the three men had not been released, police sources said the two deceased were from Arima, while the injured man was a fire officer. At the scene of the shoot-out, the Central Division officers were joined by a team from the North Eastern Division, including Insp Jacob and Sgt Solomon. An extensive search was conducted of the area, including the getaway car and the building in which the four men were hiding. The officers recovered a large quantity of cash, three firearms, ammunition, two stolen vehicles and several of the items reported stolen. The recovered items were then taken to San Juan Police Station, where the cash was counted. It totalled $423,115 but it was unclear how much money was stolen from the home in Cunupia. The victims of the robbery visited Chaguanas Police Station yesterday morning and identified several of the items recovered. They then thanked the officers involved for their response. Police investigators are also asking for the public’s assistance in capturing the escaped suspect, noting he may have sustained bullet wounds in the exchange of gunfire. The Express was told an APB advisory had been dispatched, alerting all medical institutions and practitioners to be on the look-out for anyone seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. The escaped suspect is about five feet, 11 inches tall, of slim build, in his 20s and has a small beard. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police. Speaking to the Express, Ramesar said while the association and its membership were saddened when there were fatalities, police officers were fully prepared to defend themselves when their lives were threatened.

BANDIT FIREMAN

By NALINEE SEELAL Saturday, April 18 2015

TWO BANDITS are now dead, another is at large and a fourth — a fireman based at a fire station in North East Trinidad — is under heavy police guard at hospital after police yesterday exchanged gunfire with the four shortly after they held up and robbed a Cunupia businessman of a vault containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, jewelry and other valuables.

The police were able to get the location of the bandits thanks to a brave passer-by, who on witnessing the robbery, followed the getaway car all the way from central Trinidad to Santa Cruz and alerted cops to the suspects’ whereabouts.

Following the exchange of gunfire, one man died while being taken to hospital, another succumbed to injuries while in the operating theatre, a third bandit armed with an Uzi machine gun escaped and the fireman was detained.

The drama started at about 3.30 pm on Thursday when four men in a Nissan Tiida car bearing false number plates went to Rampersad Street Munroe Road, Cunupia and presented false badges to the owner of a business place claiming they were from the Ministry of Health and came to inspect the premises.

As the men were being allowed into the compound, they pulled out guns and began beating the owner and members of his family with their weapons. The bandits then proceeded to rob the victims of a vault containing over $400,000 in cash, jewelry, cellphones and electronic items.

Luckily a passer-by who witnessed the robbery parked his vehicle and observed the bandits as they placed the vault and other stolen items into the Tiida car.

Unknown to the bandits the eyewitness followed the vehicle from Cunupia all the way to Sun Valley Road, First Street in Santa Cruz and then contacted head of Central Division Snr Supt Johnny Abraham.

At about 5.30 pm, Abraham along with Inspector Terrance Williams, Sgts Jitindra Toolaram and Figaro and officers of the Chaguanas CID went to Sun Valley Road, Santa Cruz where they surrounded the house where the bandits were at the time, counting wads of $100 bills which they got from the vault.

When officers announced their presence, one man emerged with an Uzi and began firing at the officers who quickly returned fire, striking three men believed to be in their mid-20s. The man with the Uzi escaped, leaving his three accomplices bleeding on the ground.

The three were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mt Hope where two of the suspects died while the fireman remains warded in critical condition under heavy, armed police guard. A search of the bandits’ hideout yielded all of the stolen items including $423,000 in cash, walkie talkies, electronic items, the steel vault, as well as two pistols and a revolver. The getaway car, since found to be stolen, was impounded.

The businessman and his relatives were later taken to the EWMSC where they positively identified the fireman and the two dead bandits, as those who had robbed them.

Abraham thanked the person who proved to be a law-abiding citizen by partnering with police to ensure justice. He encouraged other citizens to follow suit and again issued a warning to persons intent on carrying out crime in his Division, that they will receive the full brunt of the law.

Well done citizen. Did a better job than the popo . Bust them when they returned to the nest.

Popo would have intercepted somewhere before and would not have captured any more bandits who may have been waiting at the nest.

LoL. Well done officers as well. I really wish the Uzi guy got his too.

It really is sad that so many fire officers, prison officers, coast guards etc are caught in these types of activities. SMH

And the dead men. I hope the media publish their photos, names and addresses then go interview their immediate family
