WTK: Chromecast v Fire TV/Stick v Roku

Postby GOAT » February 8th, 2015, 1:08 pm

Looking at getting one of these products but unsure which one.
So any help as to which one works best in T&T?
You know, which one is the easiest to get by the US-only content like EPSN3 and NetFlix.

Roku 3 more than all
it is faster, more powerful and easier to add 3rd party content / channels.

There are tons of threads on this forum already on this, just search the forums for Roku or unblock-us or smartdnsproxy

I've had a chromecast since Xmas before last. And no problems. Great bang for your buck if u just like streaming vids off youtube, Netflix etc. It's optimized with android devices tho, as iOS devices don't play flash media. Lots of apps in play store for streaming movies from your favorite sites directly from your phone/tab/laptop to your tv. Set up is very easy and takes less than 5 mins. No complaints at all.

But one thing to keep in mind with Chromecast you won't be able to use Vpn services which I think sucks !

Does flow allow this because you would need a subscription from them.

Definitely the roku 3 would have advantages over the chromecast. USB support is a big one.

I bought a WD TV Play device and it worked ok, just couldn't add new apps to it and the interface was a little sluggish.

Roku 3 is very quick and yes it has a USB port to plug in a thumb drive or external drive with movies or music.

watchESPN is available on all these devices
http://espn.go.com/watchespn/apps

However you can only get the video clips of news reports. To watch replays and live ESPN tv you will need an ESPN subscription from a US cable provider like AT&T U-Verse, Comcast, Google Fibre etc.

This has nothing really to do with your Flow subscription so they cannot block it.

What about the ESPN subscription you get with Directv. Can you use these apps to log in and access it?

I'm using the Fire TV with xbmc installed.

The only issue is you can't plug in an external usb drive to view content (except by rooting). However, this is no big deal since xbmc has everything..

^ one thing I don't like about XBMC and similar services like PLEX etc is that while there are 50 channels you can get season 5 episode 2 of Big Bang Theory (for example), only about 3 of them actually work for that episode - finding the ones that work is real beans cause you have to try all.

Yeah I get what you're saying. It can be annoying at times especially with fluctuating internet speeds and a restless family lol. Although I always eventually found a stream that worked. I use Genesis, iStream, Navi X, 1Channel and a couple others which have never failed me. Even found Gilligan's Island :D :|

Things will improve for me once I figure out where to run the Ethernet cable discretely...

Nice update :fadein:
Looking forward to it.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/24/amaz ... el-update/
Amazon's Fire TV and Fire TV Stick will soon be much more useful, especially if you're outside of the US. Thanks to an impending update, both streaming media hubs will work in dorm rooms, hotels and other places where you have to sign in before you get online -- you can pack your device on that big vacation. The two also get support for Prime Music playlists, shortcuts for screen mirroring and hidden PIN codes when you make a purchase. You're in for the biggest treat if you have a full-fledged Fire TV box, since you'll get support for USB storage (to hold all your extra apps and games) and Bluetooth headphones (for those late-night movies).
The update is only expected to arrive in the "coming weeks." However, you won't have to live in the US to enjoy it. Amazon has also announced that the Fire TV Stick is coming to both Germany and the UK on April 15th. If you've been jonesing for the tiny media adapter, you can pre-order it now for £35 or €39.

Roku 3 is the flick. I have a Roku LT and it works great. I can cast from my phone or tablet to it. The Roku 3 is faster and has the usb port for extended storage.

Thanks Duane, will try one of those. Was actually thinking of getting rid of the Firetv stick because of frustration. Glad for the response.

Hey tuners, unfortunately I purchased the Roku stick on Amazon with the intention of streaming Netflix, which is not available on the Roku :(
Any advice on working around this problem?
