Importing from the US (older car)

Postby Ridorii » February 20th, 2015, 12:15 pm

sorry for making my first post here a help thread
Hi everyone. I saw a really, really nice 2004 E46 M3 with the ZCP package and not a whole lot of modification (just some coilovers) for $21,000 US on ebay today. I really have no experience in importing so I was wondering a few things.
- How much additionally would it cost (inlcluding shipping)
- How do I go about getting the car and shipping it
- What is needed to legally ship it
- I read multiple clauses around the internet, with some saying you cant import a car more than 6 years old and another 4 years old. In the case of the m3, its 11, is there any way to grandfather in the car?

Thanks.

Any of them would be willing to come back to Trinidad to live so that you can get that car?

To live? I highly doubt that.

Why not get one from the UK? At least it will be right hand drive...BTW have you any clue how much it would cost (if it were legal to do so) in terms of tax, licence and registration? Do you have circa at least another U$21K to cover that?

Looking into having the relative buy the car and bringing it down.

It's too old, even if it was under 6 years old.

Duty as it is over 3000cc is 45% = $70k,
3.25L = $85k in MVT and VAT is another $47k Total cost is gonna be close to 360k TTD.

As mentioned earlier, it is too old to be licensed on the roads.
Only as a returning citizen, would the vehicle be exempted from certain taxes.

Or you can buy it, have it shipped down and use it as a donor car for one down here with a slightly smaller size engine and specs.

Who NEEDS an m3? Or a R35? Or a Mustang GT? Or a 458 italia???

But the relative wealth of a person who can afford such in Trinidad vs someone who could afford one of those is the US is vastly different, as is the percentage of tax government collects in the US vs Trini

^^ He was replying to what Skidz said, and supports what you are saying there, and on another rare occasion Pete managed to make some degree of sense which is why you are probably confused.
