Future Cars & Tech Thread

Postby killercow » June 22nd, 2014, 10:56 pm

A car in Germany can be steered with thought alone. Rose Eveleth asks its driver and his team about the fiendishly difficult skills required to steer mind-controlled vehicles.

Henrik Matzke is in the driving seat of a car, poised to make a very unusual manoeuvre. The car pulls up to a junction. He concentrates for a moment, willing the car to turn. The steering wheel spins, and the car veers to the right, accelerating away.

With his hands on his lap, Matzke is driving the car with thought alone, often at speeds up to 50km/h (31mph).

He’s part of a team at the Free University of Berlin working on what they call the Brain Driver – a project that’s hoping to bring research into reading and interpreting brain signals into people’s cars and homes. What is it like to control a one-and-a-half-tonne vehicle with your mind?

The original premise behind Brain Driver was to build a system that someone with a physical disability can use to manoeuvre through the world – as well as cars, the team has developed the technology for wheelchairs too. Brain Driver would, in theory, allow them to drive by simply thinking “right” and “left” and “forward".

But turning that dream into a reality is as hard as it sounds. Adalberto Llarena, a roboticist with the Brain Driver project, says the team has faced two main challenges: the hardware and the humans. On the hardware side, they’re trying to design a commercially viable piece of equipment that can listen in on the brain’s whispers and turn them into meaningful signals that power a machine. On the human side, they’ve got to develop something that real people can actually learn to use.

Would You Drive a 3D-Printed Car?

It seats two people, has a sleek retractable roof and runs on electric power. And its body can be 3D printed in a single piece.
Meet the Strati, the concept vehicle that was selected from more than 200 entries as the winner of the 3D Printed Car Design Challenge -- back in mid-April, US-based company Local Motors invited designers from around the world to submit their concepts for a car that can be manufactured using 3D printing.
Developed by Italian designer Michele Anoe, the Strati will now form the basis of a car that will be printed out live and assembled from scratch at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September.
The judges chose Anoe's design for its compatibility with existing 3D printing technologies and explained it offered "an excellent balance between innovation, complexity and practicality."

When I driving I have thoughts like " I wonder what would happen if I crashed into that maxi full of children?"

Not that I'd actually do it, I just entertain the thought. So da mean it go tap into that thought and kill the pickney dem?

Are brain signals like fingerprints?

If not, does this mean i could possibly command idiotic drivers and shoulder hogs in other cars to drive into the bush/concrete walls etc, while my car drives safely orn the road?. I can hold two thoughts in my head at a time.

Re: Car Future Tech Thread

Postby killercow » June 28th, 2014, 12:34 am

Google launched its Android Auto system, which brings the world's most ubiquitous mobile operating system directly into vehicles. Android Auto allows drivers to access navigation, music and communications through voice commands and steering wheel controls. The system also brings certain Android apps into the car, albeit in modified form, and is open to developers to create new apps. Google has partnered with roughly 30 automotive manufacturers to bring the system to market, relieving carmakers of development costs associated with creating their own infotainment system back-ends. Apple's CarPlay system, meanwhile, will be available in many carmakers' 2015 models, among them Hyundai, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.

An unlikely Harley-Davidson debuts

This month was a monumental one for Harley-Davidson as it kicked off a US tour of its first electric motorcycle, dubbed Project LiveWire. Harley said the tour, which will travel along the country’s storied Route 66, is intended to gauge enthusiasts’ feedback ahead of a possible production run. The bike generates 74 horsepower with 52 pound-feet of torque, has a maximum range of 55 miles and will accelerate from zero to 60mph in less than four seconds, according to the manufacturer, which is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Breaking with Harley tradition of a rumbling exhaust note, the purely electric bike has been tuned for an sound signature that mimics a jet fighter.

Aston Martin Racing goes solar

The British sports-car manufacturer has teamed with Hong Kong-based Hanergy Global Solar Power to test thin, photovoltaic solar cells on its racing cars. The gathered energy would be used to power air conditioners during races, a task usually performed by the engine. Under FIA World Endurance Championship regulations, racing teams must keep cabin temperatures below 32C (roughly 90F). The solar cells can be fitted to the roof or rear windscreen, relieving any power draw from the engine or battery resources. Aston Martin expects to use the solar system on its Vantage GTE at the recently constructed Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. If all goes to plan, the company will add solar technology to its V12 Vantage GT3 and V8 Vantage GT4 racing cars.

Ford does legwork

Ford engineers saw room to improve the efficacy of knee-level airbags. Instead of a traditional bag that shoots down out of the dash during a collision, the knee air bag in the 2015 Mustang (above) is placed behind the outer glovebox panel. When the bag inflates, the plastic door panel extends towards the passenger's knees, with the airbag behind it, allowing the impact to be spread across more surface area. This results in an airbag 65% lighter and a gas inflator 75% smaller than comparable solutions, Ford claims. The carmaker is considering adapting the tech for other areas of its vehicles.

Toyota finalises new fuel cell vehicle
p021r70n.jpg
p021r70n.jpg (16.85 KiB) Viewed 6482 times

The final exterior design and pricing of Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the FCV, were revealed this month. The FCV will go on sale in Japan first, in April 2015, for the equivalent of about $70,000, with US and European launches planned for the summer. Toyota said the pricing for those two regions had not yet been set, and that the FCV would only go on sale in areas like California and Germany, where adequate hydrogen refueling stations and delivery infrastructure existed. The company says the sedan's performance is on a par with that of gasoline-fuelled cars, and has a cruising range of 700km (about 435 miles). Toyota is betting on FCVs rather than all-electric vehicles, owing to compressed hydrogen’s higher energy density and its ease of storage and transport. The vehicle refuels in just three minutes and only emits water vapor.

A tribute to Automobili Lamborghini on the occasion of its 50th birthday, the Veneno is the ultimate party favour

p015xm4c.jpg

p015xmch.jpg

Derived from the overachieving Aventador, the arrow-shaped Veneno pushes the performance envelope even further. The car makes use of the Aventador’s mid-mounted 6.5-litre V12, bumped from 700hp to 739hp, and drives all four wheels through a 7-speed automated manual gearbox. Its chassis, featuring an inboard pushrod suspension bolted to a carbon fibre monocoque structure, is pure prototype racer, but Lamborghini is proud to note that the Veneno meets all worldwide road-car safety and registration requirements. Top speed is a breezy 220mph. (For those keeping track, the Aventador is good for 217mph.)

The Veneno is a sequel of sorts to the Gallardo-derived, and similarly futuristic, Sesto Elemento show car from 2010. But whereas Lamborghini said it would craft 20 examples of the Sesto Elemento, the automaker plans to build just three Venenos during 2013, priced at a cool 3 million euros each (at writing, about $4.1 million, plus tax). And before you get your hopes up, the company has already found buyers for its triplets, save the one on the Geneva motor show stand – chassis number 0, whose future, to quote Lamborghini, has not been determined yet.

As for the name, Veneno, according to the company, was the name of a particularly bad-tempered and fearsomely fast Spanish fighting bull who gained notoriety in 1914 for goring bullfighter José Sánchez Rodríguez to death. A vicious pedigree for a vicious machine.

cant work, well it will work, but the cost to do so will outweigh the benefits and will take such a long to pay off for themselves, that they'll actually break before that happens... Major loss
Also, solar panels inefficient and expensive as fuarrrk

Just think about it, so many potholes/cracks/sinks happen naturally with just heavy traffic, imagine how sensitive electronics covered with glass will hold up

It may forever be only a concept but nevertheless...

Audi A9 Concept Car Repairs Itself And Changes Colour

1.jpg

Spanish designer, Daniel Garcia, imagined a four-door sports coupe for the Audi lineup. Garcia designed the Audi A9 Concept as a possible replacement for Audi’s current flagship model, the A8. The A9 Concept was designed using Audi’s current design styles and is a luxury sports sedan aimed to compete with the likes of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and the Lamborghini Estoque. The designer says that he drew inspiration for the design from Santiago Calatrava’s architectural design displayed in his buildings in “La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias” (The City of Arts and Sciences) which is located in Garcia’s hometown of Valencia.

The most amazing feature of the car is the single-piece windscreen/roof which is to be designed using a currently undiscovered nanotechnology material. This material will allow the car to repair any damage automatically as well as change color and opacity, changing visibility in both directions. The nano-material sounds very sci-fi and the cars exterior matches that theme. Moreover, the car boasts an unique ‘electronic painting’ system that allows the owner to change the vehicle exterior colour with the touch of a button. The powerhouse beneath this moving work of art will be an advanced hybrid system consisting of an internal combustion engine paired with four electric motors in the wheels. Pictures of the concept can be seen below.
