LAVENTILLE
A 27-year-old man who was wanted for a series of crimes in the North Eastern district including attempted murder, shooting with intent, robbery, and trafficking cocaine is dead following a shoot-out with police yesterday morning.
According to police reports, at about 8.30 a.m. a party of officers from the North Eastern Division Task Force led by Cpl Sunil Bharath, under the supervision of Inspector Roger Alexander and Sgt Cornelius Samuel, made their way to an area along Laventille Road, Laventille, known as Shadow Hill.
Once there, the officers, acting on information received, surrounded a house where they called out the name Jerome Cross and demanded that he, and anyone else who may be inside, surrender themselves. The policemen received no response, and they made their way inside the building.
However, upon entering the home, the officers were surprised to see Cross aka “Box” sitting in a chair facing the doorway.
Police said when Cross saw the officers, he raised a firearm that he was holding and pointed it at them.
The officers then opened fire on the suspect, hitting him several times about his upper body.
Some of the policemen rushed the injured man to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, but Cross was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police officers who remained on the scene reportedly recovered a .38 revolver with three rounds of ammunition.
They also found a quantity of marijuana at the back of the building.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Senior Superintendent Khan explained that, while it was unfortunate that a human life was lost and that investigations were continuing into the incident, the actions of the policemen involved in the exercise, in fearlessly putting their lives on the line in the pursuit of a suspect believed to be armed, had to be recognised and praised.
Khan singled out and commended Bharath for the leadership of officers in similar exercises throughout the year, which has led to a statistical reduction in serious reported crime in the North Eastern Division, as compared to the same period last year.
Cross was the first of two police killings which took place yesterday.

Another 'Good boy' gone :

Thirty-one-year-old Joel Apparicio was “innocently gunned down” by a Special Reserve Police officer in San Juan yesterday morning, according to his mother Pastor Wendy Apparicio.
“That man! That man there killed my son! Why? Oh God why!?” screamed Pastor Wendy as she pointed at the police officer who reportedly shot Apparicio. At the time the pastor, who officiates at the Jesus Elam Revival Assembly in San Juan, was struggling to maintain her composure as she stood over her son’s body mere moments after he was killed. All the while the officer in question was on a cellular phone, seated in the driver’s seat of a black Nissan X-Trail motor vehicle parked next to Joel Apparicio’s body.
In an emotional attempt to prove her son’s innocence Pastor Wendy emptied her son’s pockets to the small crowd that had gathered — in full view of the officer in the car — to show that Apparicio had nothing illegal on him. No attempts were made by the lawman to inform her that her actions could potentially contaminate the scene.
“All yuh see this right!? No gun, no knife, no weed, nothing! So what you kill my son for?” screamed Pastor Wendy at the driver of the vehicle.
Inconsolable, she began shouting for all who would listen that her son had got into a disagreement with a group of men in the Croisee, and that he was actually running to the police for help.
“This girl (name called) accused him of being a paedophiliac and those boys in the Croisee heard about it and was roughing him up. He run away from that group because he decide to take front and was running to the police station to talk to them about that and about them fellas. I was walking up the road right behind him, when (at about 11.45 a.m.) that policeman just pull up next to him and shoot him down. You eh even get out your car, nothing? You just drive up next to him, roll down your window and shoot him? That is madness! That boy doh be in anything! He doesn’t drink! He doesn’t smoke! He doesn’t do anything!” shouted Pastor Wendy.
When approached by Express, the distraught woman refused to speak, saying she was not in the right frame of mind. She however continued to loudly render her version of the incident to all who would listen.
After about ten minutes, parties of officers from the North Eastern Division Police Station, the San Juan Police Station, the Rapid Response Unit, the Barataria Police Station, and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, among others, began arriving. It was then that some of the officers who arrived confronted Pastor Wendy for potentially “contaminating” the scene.
This resulted in the distraught woman arguing with the officers and her removal from the scene by a relative who was afraid that the situation would “escalate further.”
The policemen then cordoned off the area, but they repeatedly moved the caution tape further and further along the roadway. However, this action was chastised by residents who claimed that the officers were only pushing the people away so that they could cover up their tracks.
“Why all yuh keep on moving us? Why all yuh doing that? We already see everything, that he had nothing on him, and that he was just killed just so, just so. So what alya pushing us so far back for? What all yuh trying to hide?” exclaimed an elderly gentleman.
While at the scene, Express also overheard an instruction that some police officers received to “remove themselves from the scene” immediately followed by the said officers leaving the area.
In fact, it was also observed that Senior Supt of Police John Daniel arrived on the scene and, after a conversation with some lawmen behind the caution tape, he too left the area.

Cop allegedly admits after shooting: I killed wrong man

Police shot and killed two men within the space of three hours yesterday. In the most recent killing, Joel Apparicio, a 31-year-old father of one, was killed while on his way to make a report at the San Juan Police Station. Reports state that Apparicio, of Barataria, who also had an address at Bon Air West, Arouca, was running north along Real Street around 11.30 am when he was shot. A self-employed businessman, Apparicio had been accused of paedophilia, his mother Wendy told onlookers moments after her son was killed. She added that after being informed of the accusation her son was on his way to the police station.

Eyewitnesses said as Apparicio ran past a nearby jewelry shop, where an officer had stopped to buy a battery for her watch, a male officer who was in a black Nissan X-trail drove behind Apparicio and without warning shot him. Apparicio fell on the sidewalk and died. The officer who shot Apparicio is alleged to have said the deceased was not the man he thought he was and returned to his vehicle where he called his colleagues. The man’s mother, who was trailing behind and saw the killing, emptied her son’s pockets in full view of onlookers to prove he had nothing illegal on him. “The man was running along the road next thing I hear ‘pop’, a gun went off and the man fall on the ground, then I see the mother running. You (the officer) is a trained man, you supposed to ask a question, the man never had nothing on him. I saw him running up the road,” one man said. “I not taking that. It’s too much, it’s too much man. I want to watch that man in his eye,” a female relative screamed as Apparicio’s mother shouted at the man who claimed her son’s life, saying: “That is him.”

Wendy, a pastor at the Jesus Elam Church, Barataria, was heard screaming out for her son as onlookers grumbled among themselves that “them police too wicked!” Others asked why police weren’t killing the “real criminals.” As the crowd spoke ill of the lawmen, one officer was heard saying that none of the onlookers was mentioning that prior to Apparicio running up the street there was a robbery. That, however, could not be verified by police when the T&T Guardian sought clarity. Apparicio was the eighth man to have been killed by a police bullet this year.

PRIVATE DOCTORS, NURSES NOT REPORTING GUNSHOTS WOUNDS
By SASHA HARRINANAN Saturday, June 21 2014

POLICE have launched an investigation into reports that some doctors and nurses at private medical institutions have been “treating criminals’ gunshot wounds,” and not reporting same to the law enforcement authorities thus delaying apprehension of the individuals in question.

This was revealed to Newsday by Head of the North Eastern Division task Force (NEDTF), Inspector Roger Alexander, during an interview yesterday afternoon. Questioned about the status of the search for an unidentified man shot during an exchange of gunfire with NEDTF officers on Thursday morning, Alexander said the man might very well have been treated by a doctor illegally, enabling him to escape detection to date. “Lately, we’ve been hearing about medical professionals, private doctors and even a nurse with access to the required medication, who are treating these criminals privately, which is why we aren’t seeing them (criminals) turn up at the hospitals and the health centres for treatment.” Alexander also told Newsday these rumours are likely based on fact because “when we apprehend some of them a few weeks later, their bullet wounds have been treated and stitched up. So this is something we are actively looking into, and which we intend to get to the bottom of,” the NEDTF head assured. In response to Alexanders’ claim, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan remarked, “The police should provide the proof of which medics are doing it. This will allow the Medical Council the opportunity to deal with it.” The manhunt continued yesterday for the third man involved in Thursday’s shoot-out. Alexander said he is certain that the man would be arrested soon. “This morning (Friday) we were searching for him along the Santa Cruz River. We got reports he might have been hiding in an abandoned house there but there were no signs of recent occupation.” Two days ago, the NEDTF was on patrol at about 3.45 am when they were alerted that a silver Toyota Corolla had just left the Francis Street, San Juan area where three occupants of the vehicle had attempted to steal a boat engine.

The assailants set off an alarm and fled the scene. Persons in the area who heard the alarm alerted the police. The silver Corolla sped off onto Saddle Road in the vicinity of the San Juan North Secondary School. Alexander said the police officers called on the occupants of the vehicle to stop, but a chase ensued north along Saddle Road.

During the chase there was an exchange of gunfire between the occupants and the police. The occupants lost control of the car in the vicinity of Jagan Village where the vehicle spun off the road also flipping over several times. One of the occupants came out of the car, fired several shots at the police and ran into the nearby bushes. One of the two men who died during the exchange of gunfire was identified on Thursday as Abba Diaz (25) of Blackford Street, Santa Cruz but up to press time yesterday, Alexander said the other deceased man remained unidentified. “We got four possible names but the second man hasn’t been identified yet. We continue to work on all leads,” Alexander stated

So these private doctors and nurses creating more crime, as they are criminals themselves. Really heard some people talking about this long before. They should lose their license to practice and be jailed.

They should have a sniper team alongside them then. But then again, the citizens always saying police brutality, and when crime is being done, " there never is police around". Best to go undercover and take them out silently.

Seems the bullet of a police gun is the only way for justice to happen. The Grande bandit was arrested last year for a car theft but lo and behold was back at it 1 year later.

POLICE shot and killed two suspected thieves in Couva on Thursday night.

One of the deceased was identified as Beresford Asoon, who police said was a known car thief from Sangre Grande. The second man is yet to be identified.

According to police, at around 9.50 p.m. a woman driving a Nissan Navara arrived at her Roystonia home with her family, when two men confronted her at gunpoint.

The thieves ordered the family out of the vehicle, and left with it.
Police were contacted and a party of police officers of the Central Police Division led by Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham responded and set up several road blocks in Couva and Freeport.
Police said the thieves crashed the vehicle in Roystonia, and escaped in aToyota Corolla that was following behind.

That vehicle was spotted heading south near St Mary's Junction, Freeport, and officers pursued the vehicle along Southern Main Road.
Police said there was an exchange of gunfire, and the thieves abandoned the vehicle and ran into a bushy area.

Officers pursued the suspects who were shot and wounded. Police said they were taken for medical treatment but died.

Police said they recovered a 1.38 revolver from the suspects.
Autopsies are expected to be performed on the bodies today at the Forensic Sciences Centre, St James.

The persistent sound of a helicopter was evident last evening from about 10 pm and continued for quite some time thereafter.
The unit in operation was absolutely not visible even if from the sound,it was obviously immediately over-head.You just couldn't determine where the 'thing' was located.
Clearly, the equipment being deployed is much better outfitted for the exercise executed last evening in the Mc Bean/Couva environment.
The business of the bandits now comes with a level of terminal risks that is changing the viability of this particular enterprise.
BTW, the placement of patrol units at key locations coupled with moving patrols has become so significant that 'clear' exits are no longer available.
.....The blue strobe real bright in central.
Officer Abraham has brought a whole new dimension to the game and he continues to give clear warning.
