Fitz/Simmons/Triplett love triangle

Fitz going all-in on being jealous about Agent Triplet because he has feelings about Simmons feels too obvious..

Episode #19 'Only Light in the Darkness' - Last Night 22-4-14 - "bits an pieces"

Agent Koenig balks at the suggestion, insisting the team undergo his and Nick Fury’s 96-variable lie detector test before anyone leaves the base

The lie detector scene Ward beat a mega lie detector with the help of a needle under his fingernail

The lie detector test scene was really the best scene of the night as we were shown more of each character and were given more insight into each of their personalities organically for the purposes of the story

Meanwhile, Skye discovers the truth about what happened to Agent Koenig..Skye follows Agent Koenig’s signal to a storage closet, discovering his corpse hidden in the ceiling, before realizing Agent Ward is Hydra..but it takes an interesting turn after that point, when Skye decides to use their new intimacy to manipulate Ward.

It’s unclear just how much Ward knows about what Skye knows

Season 1 - Episode 22 - Beginning of the End - (Season Finale) - Tuesday 13th May 2014

Epi 22 Begins with..

The confrontation between the agents and the Centipede soldiers resolves remarkably quickly when May (Ming-Na Wen) manages to steal the Asgardian berserker staff from the one sloppy non-Centipede soldier in the room and use its strength to bring the roof down. It a hasty resolution to a forced cliffhanger, and the berserker staff is disposed of as quickly as the soldiers.

Meanwhile, in evil; Garrett (Bill Paxton) is feeling juiced up and super-smart since his hot Kree injection. He tears a glass door free from its moorings and starts drawing a schematic or alien hieroglyphics on it with a nail while his Legion of Bad Guys With At Best Tangentially Overlapping Objectives looks on in concern.

Ian Quinn (David Conrad) is worried that there’s no serum left to help him impress the generals that he wants to contract out to. Ward (Brett Dalton) is worried that Garrett has gone mad. We don’t spend much time with Peterson/Deathlok (J. August Richards), but we already know he’s only here so they don’t kill his kid and/or him, so he’s probably still just generally worried about that.

Only Raina (Ruth Negga) seems placid. If anything, she’s starry-eyed at seeing someone use superpowers. Maybe Raina is a stand-in for those mean ol’ audience members who wanted a show set in the Marvel Universe to look or feel like it’s set in the Marvel Universe. If that’s the case, order me up a ‘Raina Was Right’ t-shirt pronto.

Quinn meets with a bunch of generals (led by Glenn Morshower) at a Cybertek facility to sell them on his cyborg super-soldier program. The meeting goes a little awry when Garrett steps in, tears out one of Morshower’s ribs, and beats him to death with it. Why? I don’t know. Garrett had a vision of the future, and it involved beating Glenn Morshower to death with his own rib. Regardless, this little demonstration convinces Raina and Quinn to swiftly depart the episode, taking the gravitonium with them.

While all this is going on, our friends the agents besiege the compound. May and Skye (Chloe Bennett) walk in to the Cybertek offices with a bomb and trick Zeller into resetting the centipede soldiers so that they convene on Garrett. Garrett responds by sending Ward to take down Skye.

While all that is going on, there’s the small matter of Fitz (Iain DeCaestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) being trapped in a box at the bottom of the ocean. This story thread is actually the episode’s strongest, as it gives the actors a quiet moment to talk about life, death, and thermodynamics. It’s some of the best character stuff we’ve seen all season.

The two scientists concoct a plan to blow out the window on their room-shaped escape pod. There’s enough air in an oxygen tank for one of them to survive to get to the surface. Fitz finally confesses his feelings for Simmons and insists that she use the air. They blow out the window and Simmons drags Fitz to the surface.

At this point she has the bends, he’s probably brain-dead, and the two of them are stranded in the middle of the ocean. So it’s fortunate that very special guest star Samuel L. Jackson turns up with a helicopter, responding to a tracking device that Fitz had activated.

I say it’s Samuel L. Jackson. Technically it’s Nick Fury, but because Fury is officially dead (since the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier) he now wears a beret and sunglasses and looks like Samuel L. Jackson wandering in off a nearby sound stage.

At Cybertek, Ward comes for Skye and says some generally vulgar things, like, “Maybe I’ll just take what I want. Wake up something inside you.” It’s like an evil version of When Harry Met Sally. Can a man and a woman ever truly be enemies without gratuitous threats of sexual violence coming between them?

Thankfully May arrives to put an end to this nonsense by beating Ward up in a half-finished office. Sure, their conversation also takes a puerile sexual turn (Ward pins May and says, “Reminds me of the old days.” She responds, “You were never on top”), but at least the fight ends with her shooting him in the foot with a nail gun and kicking him in the head, and that makes up for something.

We are now fully in boss fight mode. Coulson tracks down Garrett and gets punched across a room, and Nick Fury arrives on the scene with a giant gun that takes out the Centipede soldiers. In another Whedonesque moment, Fury worries that Garrett took the HYDRA path because he misunderstood an inspirational speech about one man “being part of something bigger”. (Garrett heard it as “one man can be something bigger”.) It’s the classic Joss Whedon pin-pricking of a villain’s pomposity.

Skye discovers Cybertek’s “incentive program”; the company holds hostages to keep its employees loyal. (I used to work for Google; they had a similar thing.) She frees Zeller’s wife and Peterson’s son, and sends a message to Peterson that lets him know that his son is safe. Peterson turns his missiles on Garrett, blows him up, and stamps on his head, with Coulson’s blessing.

We see Garrett’s body, which means he’s definitely dead. Which means he’s definitely not dead.
And that’s the bad guys dealt with! Coulson tells Ward that he threw his life away, and Peterson walks off, Littlest Hobo-style, to right wrongs rather than let his son see the monster he’s become.
But it’s not over yet! Garrett pulls himself out of his coffin, climbs into the Deathlok machine, and gets rebuilt as an unimpressive-looking middle aged Deathlok. To everyone’s great relief, Coulson disintegrates him. Sure, it’s yet another cold-blooded murder, but even I’m inured to them by now. And hey, it was a gag murder!

Fury and Coulson have a little sit down on the wingycarrier, in which Coulson yells at Fury for bringing him back from the dead. Fury gives Coulson a new assignment; Coulson is the new director of SHIELD, and he has to rebuild the organization from the ground up

Fury effectively repeats his disappearance speech from the end of The Winter Soldier and walks away. The team heads off to new coordinates and a new secret base, the Playground, where Simmons is waiting for them. Fitz, we’re told, is alive. We don’t get more than that. A big question mark hangs over the character’s head for next season.

Incidentally, the Playground is run by Billy Koenig, identical to Eric Koenig. Yes, Patton Oswalt is back. One suspects he’s a life model decoy.

In the first of two kickers, Raina attends a meeting with a shadowy figure with burns on his or her arms. Raina hands the figure a picture of Skye and says, “I found your daughter.”

In the second kicker, Coulson gets out of bed and uses a knife to etch into the wall a version of the same strange markings that Garrett was drawing earlier in the episode.

The end.

The second season of Agents of SHIELD will be split into two parts - with the Hayley Atwell-fronted Agent Carter bridging the gap.

The 32-year-old first appeared as the character in 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger and later appeared in the role for Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.

"It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalised when the men return home from fighting abroad," ABC's official description reads.

"Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers."

It is not clear how long Marvel's Agent Carter will run for, although writers have previously claimed that it will probably be limited to 13 episodes or fewer.

Season 2: Where Is Fitz? How Is Fury Planning To Save Him?

Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) put his life on the line to keep Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) from sharing his inescapable watery grave, but the determined scientist was not about to leave her best friend behind. While Simmons managed to pull Fitz 90 feet to the surface, crushing water pressure and the bends forced the engineer into the arms of Fury's (Samuel L Jackson) medical team (see video below).

Alive - but still in a fragile state - Fitz was unable to rejoin his team (sans Ward) when the finale came to a close, and his absence has many viewers wondering if former director Fury is cooking up some new miracle to keep the youngster alive.

"We wanted to leave something there for the audience to speculate in terms of where we're going to go," Loeb told TV Guide. "The fun of what Jeff, Jed [Whedon] and Maurissa [Tancharoen] created in the season finale is that there are some things that are very neatly tied up and there are some things that are left open, so we'll start the next season with a bang and answer some questions and open more doors and windows.

ABC's Agents of SHIELD at a new time (9 p.m. ET on Tuesdays) when it returns next Fall.

Who or what is Skye...?

Skye, the young outsider who had to earn her spot on the team from the get-go. She’s a hacker with a good heart who happens to have a mysterious and dark past. She also took a few bullets to the chest in episode 12 (“T.R.A.C.K.S.”) and nearly died until, like Coulson and Garrett, she had a dose of Kree GH 325 Koolaid and made a speedy recovery.

Skye’s story and importance is one of the more frustratingly drawn out elements of the series, but it’s clearly part of a much larger plan. In episode 12 (“Seeds”) we learned that when Skye was a baby, many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents died trying to protect her and that she was classified by the organization as a 0-8-4 (an object of unknown origin). Skye’s not human and her no-consequence recovery from using the GH 425 had Fitz and Simmons secretly researching her seemingly normal DNA for a while. Combine this knowledge with the fact that Kree blood sustained her and there must be a connection.

Image

We learn in the first season’s final episodes is that Skye’s unidentified parents were the “monsters” responsible for the deaths of the agents in the Chinese village where she was recovered as a baby. Her parents are super-powered monsters, and her physiology works with Kree blood… Is she an Inhuman ? There are other alien possibilities (like the Majesdanians who left a child on Earth named Karolina Dean who joined the Runaways

Who is Skye’s Father ?

Image

At the end of the finale we see Raina meet up with Skye’s father, someone she knows but hasn’t seen in a long time. Was she exiled? We can’t see his face, but it appears he’s covered in blood. Is he an Inhuman, some other powered individual or another alien species?

Image

Skye’s dad has bloody hands

What are the markings on the wall..?

Now that we have the Inhumans and Coulson discussions out of the way, let’s focus on what exactly Coulson is carving into the wall at the end of the season. Ultimately, this is the biggest question and cliffhanger, serving as the post-credits button of the final episode. It’s the same pattern that Garrett began carving into a door with a nail earlier in the episode and has to do with the GH 325 serum they both took.

Image

They, according to Raina, are “connected” to something that’s letting them see or understanding something humans shouldn’t see or understand. For that reason, we can assume it’s alien in nature. Is it a star map? Plans for Ultron? Alien text? Knowledge of the Inhumans or Terrigen Mists? Let’s hope this one is answered clearly and early in Season 2.

What’s in the Toolbox...?

Image

Nick Fury gives Phil Coulson the grand task of restarting S.H.I.E.L.D. from scratch, since he was always part of the “heart” of the organization – and for fans, the heart of the films. Coulson is now the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fury gave him a little black cube to help him begin.

To see Coulson reuniting key SHIELD personnel and factions, reacquiring assets, etc., and maybe, just maybe, he’ll need the help of super-rich industrialist Tony Stark. Coulson still needs to meet up with The Avengers and tell them the really old good news that he’s still alive and has been for a while.

Nick Fury explained to Coulson that the reasoning behind the Tahiti initiative was that, surprise, Coulson is pretty much an Avenger, too. And Avengers are hard to come by. Fury gives Coulson one last assignment: Rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D., but do it right. And with that, the long-time director passed off his duties, and scampered off-set and, presumably, headed over to wherever they are filming “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

As for Coulson team, the Bus lands in a new base, with a brand new Patton Oswalt waiting to assign lanyards. Clone? Cyborg? Twin?

Image

Agent Eric Koenig died at the hands of Grant Ward but actor Patton Oswalt is back in uniform handing out lanyards same as before. Same jokes, same rules, same dress code, same actor. We love Patton Oswalt but we were surprised to see him return at the very end of the series as Eric’s brother, Billy.

Could Koenig be a line of Life Model Decoys used to maintain satellite S.H.I.E.L.D. bases around the globe for Fury?...Is this character going to have a more regular role in Season 2?

At least Coulson have a brand new base to work with

Agent Ward -

Garrett rescued Ward from a life in prison while promising something better. Now, Ward is essentially right back where he started.

There's also how far Ward has already gone. He shot Hand and two other agents — He helps kill a ton of agents at the Fridge, the super-prison that he helps Garrett take over in this episode. And he lets out a ton of WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) into Hydra's possession. None of the atrocities and crimes at the Fridge could happen without Ward's help — so if he's a double agent, he's beyond ruthless. And strategically, whatever value he'd have undercover is less than the cost of giving Hydra those WMDs.

We can safely say he’ll never be a part of Coulson’s “family” again, jeopardizing the lives of Fitz and Simmons, his plan to kill Fitz-Simmons failed, even though he obviously was trying to save them .

The finale made a point of emphasizing that Ward was never truly Hydra, nor did he care for their beliefs, but without his mentor (Garrett) to give him missions. Ward has no purpose or goals.

Team Coulson is going to find new ways to torture him for Hydra information. Coulson’s all about the mind games,he will be tortured both mentally and physically, and thrown in prison for the rest of his life Ward will have to figure out who he is without Garrett puppet.

However, while Ward wasn’t killed, he certainly ended Season 1 as a villain

If Ward returns in Season 2, and we expect him to, how much of a role will he play?
