Reason for stretching out the funeral was the family wanted to wait until all foreign dignataries could attend.

On another note, it's eerily similar to a storyline in Game of Thrones, where a ruler who is murdered is buried with much fanfare long after his death, so much so that his corpse is rotting at the funeral, with ppl throwing up. Look for it next season.
