In the height of the Carnival season, thieves broke into the Sangre Grande branch of Republic Bank yesterday, carting away an undisclosed sum of money. The bank’s general manager, group marketing and communications, Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks, in a telephone interview yesterday, confirmed the theft took place in the wee hours of the morning. The bandits, Garcia-Brooks said, gained entry at the back of the bank and stole the money from the vault.

“The perpetrators, as far as I am aware have not yet been apprehended,” she added. “They did get away with a quantity of cash, but I can’t confirm the amount at this time. We are hopeful the police apprehend them.” Garcia-Brooks said the bank’s security staff have been working with the police, who are investigating and had been watching footage from the bank’s security cameras to identify the culprits. She explained that it was not normal practice to have security officers stationed at any bank after working hours.

“I don’t think any of the banks do that. You don’t have 24-hour security.” Asked if this was the first time this branch had been targeted, Garcia-Brooks said, “It’s the first time in recent memory. We have not had something like this in many, many years.”

$$million robbery at Sangre Grande bank

Four persons are assisting police with investigations of a break-in at the Republic Bank branch in Sangre Grande where a vault was looted and thieves escaped with cash, reportedly millions of dollars, as well as safety deposit boxes.

Bank officials could not give details as to the amount of cash that was stolen yesterday.

Police reported that at about 12.30am yesterday morning, they received a report from the security guard on duty at the bank that the back door of the bank was open.

A party of police officers led by Sgt Harper and Pc Keshan Sankar of the Sangre Grande CID responded. On arrival at the bank on the Eastern Main Road in Sangre Grande, police saw that the back door of the bank was opened, with several house-breaking implements lying on the ground nearby. The cops also discovered a quantity of jewelry on the ground.

Police believe the door was forced opened by the intruders. On further investigations, the police discovered the bank’s vault opened and emptied of its contents and that safety deposit boxes were missing. The CID police officers were joined by Sangre Grande Task Force and members of the Robbery squad led by Sgt Blake.

Police believed that the security system at the bank were flawed , thus facilitating the break-in.

Several persons have been questioned, with police detaining four of them to help in further investigations.
