Google acquires Nest's line of home automation products for $3.2 billion, pledges continued support for iOS



We'll be honest: if you told us a big company was going to buy Nest, we wouldn't have guessed Google. After all, the home automation company was founded by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, both ex-members of the original iPod team. Heck, the Nest Thermostat is sold at Apple stores, and is referred to in the blogosphere as something of an honorary Apple product. But whaddya know? Google just scooped up the outfit for a cool $3.2 billion. That bit of inside baseball aside, Google is being quick to assure users that Nest will continue to operate under its own brand -- not unlike Motorola. Quoth Mr. Fadell: "Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone. We've had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship."

Also, to answer the obvious question you're all asking: yes, Nest will continue to offer apps for both iOS and Android. That means Apple fans will still be able to tinker around with their thermostats and Nest Protect smoke detectors even after the acquisition goes through. There's also a possibility that Google's other products will eventually integrate more tightly with the Nest lineup, but so far, Google is staying mum. "Nest's product line obviously caught the attention of Google and I'm betting that there's a lot of cool stuff we could do together, but nothing to share today," said Rogers.

Any N4 ROM suggestions ?

If you're flashing ROM only, PA, Purity Cataclysm (personal favourite) and of course CM

If you're into trying different kernels as well, personally I will steer clear of CM (especially nightlies) they are using some closed sourced stuff from Codeaurora/Qualcomm that breaks AOSP.

I coulda swear this was for N5 too. Got one only a day now and want to customize the crap out of it. PA 4.0beta is out and looking at it. As well as franco's kernel. Any N5 users here? what rom you all using?

Just flashed ditto note 3 rom on my Note 2, and must admit I love it runs super smooth....except ram usage which has gone up from a 900mb average to 1.3 out of 1.7 average

Features work flawlessly except quick glance which only works under ideal lighting conditions. ... Smart pause and smart scroll is fabulous!

Noticed the stock video player for said rom crashes every time its Launched!

All in all I recommend flashing it to ur note 2 , it improves it quite alot , not exactly In performance the only performance improvement was in 2d /3d graphics and I/o storage...cpu just under a regular note 2 according to Antutu Benchmark


In conclusion I would love to get ur feedback on this matter

I think the batter life of the phone is horrible! Under regular use , no data , wifi, screen brightness on auto. ..gps off, screen set to adapt.. its on vibrate and power saver on and I get this battery life

Which I find deplorable what are your opinions guys?

Looks like Google services is run in wild there, but only 9% gone so early days

There are a couple apps on play store that can tell you what's using your battery when it shouldn't be: Better Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector, try them, leave phone off charger overnight for Best results

a friendly reminder to all turn off google now's notifications and google's location service, these two things will help you save so much battery

will keep that in mind. I on PAb4. But I didn't start using it yet. Have to transfer my backup files to it.

EDIT: also, flicking Reixmann... because of him i noticed how dull especially wrt skin tones the n5 screen is. Compared to the HOX screen its so dull. Worst than the iphones. text is super crisp though.

Nokia’s Android phone includes Windows Phone-like UI



Images of Nokia’s Android phone, codenamed Normandy, were originally published in November, but a number of recent leaks have provided a closer look at the hardware and its software. Vizileaks has published what appears to be a near-final hardware unit, and some of the early Android apps that run on the device have also been detailed. Thanks to Evleaks, we're getting a closer look at the UI on Nokia's Android handset.

The UI appears to be very similar to Windows Phone. with a number of tiles that provide access to apps like Skype, Twitter, Vine, Facebook, and BBM. Some of the tiles are identical to the same color scheme and iconography used in the equivalent Nokia Windows Phone apps. There’s also what appears to be a notification / app center that displays missed calls, notifications, and recent apps / activity. A status bar indicates that the phone has dual-SIM capabilities. Although the phone is targeted at the low-end, the striking similarities with Windows Phone in hardware and software show that Nokia continues to blur the lines across its range of devices.

My aunt sent me a Samsung S2X (T989D) from Canada and i need it unlocked... Can anyone do this?... I'll pay for the service once i know its legit... I dont even know anyone with a S2"X" lol... But it was an upgrade from the normal S2... This one has a dual core 1.5GHz Scorpion CPU as oppose to the S2's 1.2GHz cortex...

Turns out phablets are just as popular as we thought, and now there’s some data to prove it.

A recent report from Juniper research estimates that more than 20 million phablets shipped in the year 2013. The number isn’t at all surprising given that Samsung was able to ship more than 5 million units of the Galaxy Note 3 in just one week last year. Perhaps the overall phablet numbers would be higher if Samsung released it’s latest giant phone earlier in the year.

While some may dislike the giant phones, Juniper says they probably aren’t going anywhere. The research firm estimates that manufacturers will ship 120 million phablets by 2018. That’s six times more than what they shipped in 2013.

Currently running pa4b3 on my nexus 5 with Franco's kernel and I'm pretty impressed so far. Coming from the total crap battery life on my htc one x I'm surprised with all the use I had today my battery is still on 40%

Xperia z ultra is one of the very best android experiences I've had to date. I've always loved phablets, adopting the note 1 long before it caught on. Glad to see the form factor not only stay alive but grow from strength to strength.

haha nice! same here especially when I was told early on a few times to use it from a close friend. I ended up buying his app. Man flashing kernels are so easy with it. This current setup with PA and Franco I don't even need to be behind a PC.

same. a friend suggested it..and I must say...Its awesome.
I got my nexus over christmas. Came off an iphone.. I had the nexus 4 and loved it till the screen got smashed
I Must say, this phone was blazing fast right out of the box. when I turned on ART, things got a tad snappier.
could just be in my mind, but the phone feels even snappier with the new kernel.
Cant see myself going back to apple unless they hit us with a bigger screen

Same here I eh think I going back anytime soon. I hoping automateit fixes their app for 4.4.2 though. All my automated crap eh working as it should. I may end up going to tasker but im too lazy for it.

I realise android faces d same issue like iOS. When you're on the latest OS you always have to wait for app updates for little things that broke.

I know right wrt speed... This phone so quick eh. I was super impressed.

Paranoid android is cool. Might not be as "appealing" as its in beta right now. To be honest I wanted a close to stock ROM and its super easy to update. I think cataclysm is more customisable and while some might like it, it can be a bit overwhelming. I really wanted to edit my quick settings and have a battery icon with percent and I got that out of PA.
