A PUNGENT odour experienced in Point Lisas caused an evacuation of tutors and students of the National Energy Skills Centre (NESC) yesterday.
The scent also led to the shutdown of neighbouring business places and companies.
According to a release from the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Ltd (Plipdeco), the odour was experienced in the vicinity of the Point Lisas Industrial Estate, Balmain, and along Rivulet Road.
The release stated: “A few companies were adversely affected and in some instances staff were sent home or company operations stopped for the remainder of the day.
“Subsequent investigations revealed that there were no gas or chemical leaks associated with companies on the industrial estate on the point in time. It appears that the source of the problem may have been chemical spraying being conducted at a site in the vicinity of Sevilla.”
Manager of corporate communications of the National Gas Company (NGC) Charmaine Mohammed said a team from the company detected the leak at the Sevilla Sports Club where chemical spraying was being done.
Mohammed said employees of NGC who complained of feeling unwell as a result of the odour left the compound for the day.
Around 9 a.m. approximately 500 students and 100 staff members were evacuated from the NESC compound following a directive from the health and safety personnel to the institution’s administration department.
Minister of Tertiary Education Fazal Karim told the Express: “I don’t know what it was. The fumes were spread across the Point Lisas area and we sent our students away as a result of that.”
NESC chairman Feroze Khan said yesterday evening he was uncertain whether there was clearance for classes to resume today.
The Plipdeco release stated a report was made to the Environmental Management Authority.
