Wtk 18" off road rims on Sportero

Postby DriFT_KiNG » September 5th, 2013, 12:25 am

Guys, need some advice...I am about to change original set of Dunlop AT tyres the vehicle came with but I have two minds about just buying new AT tyres for the stock 16" rims or put the bit extra and upgrade to some 18" off road rims on TOYO 285/60/18 AT tyres.

My main concern is if I will still have the luxury of going on trails etc and able to still jump the odd pavement to park etc...also will the 18's fit without the possibility of rubbing etc or will I have to get a lift kit...

Any advice welcome...good and bad...

the 285 should fit without any lift of scrubbing providing the wheel width and offset isnt high negative, that size tire u quoted is actually a minimal upgrade to stock 265/70, about 1" taller, and the L2 has some nice wheel wells........once u choose a good AT, like the TOYO OC, u will have a good mix of offroad capability and on road driving as well, will be limited to more heavy mud trails, but the OC has been proven to handle themselves pretty well, i had 285/60/18 Nexen HP on my surf and did go on alot of trails plus they handled wet raods and corner real good for a cheap tire........

go for it, ditch those stockies, lol........

Might get a slight rub.

Running some 275/65 17 AT's on 9 inch wheels / 0 offset.

Got a minimal rub on the mudguard. <2mm it sorted itself out tho (at the expense of a slight piece of mudguard!)

0 offset being more positive for a 9" rim, my 18x9 were more around -22

Ifs vans don't like too much of either side, just a small amount of -ve, from -12 to -24 is good for 8"-10" rim on ifs vans

Great feedback guys, thanks...keep it coming

What is the exact size and offset I should look for to ensure no rubbing etc is incurred? Also are spacers advised on this application as I do not want much of a protrusion of the wheels?

The rims that I am interested are these below:

ROCKWELL Off Road Styled Wheels by Black Rhino. The ROCKWELL is a thick open styled multi-spoke off road wheel, which leads to heavy duty bolt accents around the lip. The ROCKWELL is an aggressive off road wheel named after a natural area in the northwest corner of the little Sahara, home to 60,000 acres of sand dunes and trails. The ROCKWELL was designed in two tough finishes; solid Matte Black and Gloss Black with a machined lip to enhance the look of your stock or lifted truck. These off road wheels are available in 17x9”,18x9”,20x9”, with offsets ranging from +12mm, 00mm, -12mm. Each wheel is engineered to carry the heavy loads often associated with Trucks and SUV’s. All wheels are either hub-centric or supplied with centering rings to ensure a smooth vibration free ride. ROCKWELL off road wheels by Black Rhino.

anything wider than 265 and your steering will get stiffer\harder to turn

275's aren't bad, not much stiffer, but noticeable

285, definately more noticeable

i went back down to 265 after 275 and was quite pleased with the lesser stiffness

also consider that you are putting more load on your power steering components - pump, rack etc with the wider tyres - hence the stiffer steering

Thanks for the thoughts, comments and ideas guys.
Let me know what you all think.
So far very happy with the buy. A little compromise on the ride as it is a tad bit stiffer and the aggressive AT thread pattern as compared to the stock Dunlop's but still comfortable. The look is amazing and exactly what I was going for. Thinking to get the wider fender flares to complete the look through....

well since you asked for opnions . . . I do not like

those rims have too much positive offset that pushing the wheel outside the wheel arch

it widens your track and will give better stability, but it takes away from the look of the vehicle

with the rims further outside of the wheel well, it is easier to suffer kerb-damage when parking and when driving in water you will get the fenders dirty with road water

IMHO the sportero looks better with a more negative\lower offset rims with a bigger lip, i.e. wheel bolts close to hub and lip pushing outwards . . . but that is just my opnion and my taste

how much stiffer did the steering get with the 285's over the 265's :?:

what pressure you running :?: maybe decrease a bit to get the softer ride :?:

Think you have it the other way around... -ve means the rim centerline goes more inside sending the rim out of the wheel arch...

looks good man, now those are a great purchase, esp the rubbers, they will not dissappoint you, and from the looks of it one would assume u wont be into heavy offraod, just probably a small trail, and you will get a stiffer ride bacaese of the load rating on the tires, they will have a stiffer and tougher side wall, as compared to the stock dunlops..........
