CRIME Watch Host Ian Alleyne is the Peoples Partnership (PP) candidate to contest the November 4 by-election for the St Joseph seat.
Alleyne, accompanied by the Minister of Water Resources and the Environment Ganga Singh, turned up at the Elections and Boundaries Commission's (EBC) office in Aranguez, shortly before 11 a.m.
On March 18 this year, Alleyne was ordered to pay a total of $30,000 in fines for airing a video showing the rape of a teenage girl on three separate occasions during his programme.
The video, which was aired on CCN TV6 in October of 2011, showed the rape of a 13-year-old girl, resulting in her identification. Alleyne's show is no loner aired on CCN TV6.
Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar, presiding in the Port of Spain Eighth Court, handed down the sentence.
On each of the three charges, he was fined $10,000 or serve 24 months in jail.
Alleyne could have been fined a maximum of $25,000 and imprisoned for up to five years on each of the charges as outlined in Section 32(2) of the Sexual Offences Act under which he was charged.
According to the EBC rules, although Alleyne has been criminally convicted, he is still eligible to contest the seat. A candidate can contest unless the individual is convicted with prison time exceeding 12 months, or the death sentence.
The Peoples National Movement (PNM) has named Senator Terrence
Deyalsingh as its candidate. Last night, the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) named attorney Om Lalla as its candidate.
Comedian and broadcaster Errol Fabien this morning filed his nomination papers at the EBC's office in Aranguez.
The Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) will not be fielding a candidate but instead has endorsed Fabien. The deadline for filing of nomination documents is 3 p.m.
