AC cutting of and temperature light blinking...need help

Postby dreadburns » October 4th, 2013, 6:01 pm

My AC is cutting off intermittently in my Subaru Impreza. I also noticed that when this happens my temperature light starts to blink cause no temperature gauge just a light when overheating (I have an external temperature gauge and the temperature is normal and also the fan is on)

Does the AC have any connection to the temp light? Any suggestion on the AC problems?

When the compressor fails, does the fan also stop? If you don't use the A/C at all, would you still get the temperature light. I don't really see how it could be related, sounds like two separate problems.

I removed the compressor altogether and light still comes on. The fan are coming on as they should and temp is normal.

Was reading that the blinking light could be coolant low but recently flushed radiator and changed coolant and all levels are normal.

What about your thermostat? When last did you change it? Actually, how old is it?

What color is the light blinking in - blue or red? Coming to think of it, with the newer vehicles it could definitely be related to the a/c compressor. I don't believe your compressor is bad. I believe it is a cooling problem. I remembered having a discussion with a friend regarding this. He has a Mazda 3 though. I just found this, so take a read through. Maybe it is a cooling problem causing your compressor to automatically shut off. http://community.cartalk.com/discussion ... compressor

The light is blinking red and the temp is at 150*F. The ac guy changed the coil for the ac and same no cold breeze. We then changed the clutch plate and adjusted the spacers. With all changes we got the same result. As we got the same results the compressor was the next bet to be bad. He said it was sticking.

This all happened from Friday afternoon and Saturday so at present I could not get a scan.

As the temp is normal as per aftermarket gauge should I chance it and drive car?

I don't think it should be a problem if you drive the car, but maybe you shouldn't use the a/c. I some how don't feel the compressor or any of its components, including the clutch coil, is bad. Please make sure this guy knows what he is doing and not making you buy an unnecessary compressor. Are you sure it is not an electrical malfunction causing the ECU to believe the car is overheating, thus the ECU shuts down the compressor? I agree with ghostbusters, you should get it scanned before anything else.

Please keep us informed as to how you get it sorted out and what the problem was. Good luck!

If it gets too hot the electricals will stop signal to your a/c.

Well mechanic checked car and the thermostat was sticking as well as the radiator needed cleaning. The blinking light was the car starting to overheat so the fans were on all the time on high trying to cool engine.

Removed thermostat and now car running at about 100*F and well the fan coming on at low speed when it reaches bout 125*F. Is running temp too low? Will be buying thermostat to replace defective unit.

Does anyone know where I could get a compressor for AC? Looked in south and no luck.

I feel that compressor would be real hard to find. I was enquiring about a compressor for a 2009 Corolla recently, and they said it was about $3500 if I could even find it anywhere. So I could imagine how difficult it would be to find one for the Impreza. Just make some calls in d Bamboo.

Ok I got the ac fixed but had to use a legacy compressor. It will work as long as you get the bracket with it.

The original is real hard to get. You get replacement by mahadeo (gobin) in the bamboo.

I think was about 2500 but I got bracket, tensioner and belt and all the hoses as we had to change one end to line up with slots
