Breaking: Reports of shots fired on Capitol Hill
(CNN) – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Thursday that one person was injured in a shooting on Capitol Hill, CNN's Dana Bash reports.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has dispatched units to the Capitol, following reports of shots fired near Garfield Circle, which is on the west front of the Capitol Building.

An order was given over the Capitol speaker system to shelter in place because of an active shooter situation.

Capitol Police sent out the following advisory to staffers:

"SHELTER IN PLACE. Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House Office Buildings to shelter in place. Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, Go Kits and escape hoods; and move to the innermost part of the office away from external doors or windows. If you are not in your office, take shelter in the nearest office, check in with your OEC and wait for USCP to clear the incident. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the building until directed by USCP. All staff should monitor the situation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available."

The House and Senate went into recess after the shooting.

The woman was shot dead

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Authorities shot and killed a woman Thursday afternoon outside the U.S. Capitol after she attempted to drive her vehicle through a barricade, police tell ABC7.

The incident reportedly began when an unidentified woman tried to drive through a barricade at the White House. She had a child in the back seat of her vehicle. The woman fled the area and ended up at the Capitol, where she reportedly tried to drive through another barricade

Miriam Carey, Suspect Reportedly Killed In The Capitol Hill Shooting

According to the New York Post and the New Haven Register newspapers, Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygenist, was involved in the episode that began when she allegedly rammed her black Infiniti luxury sedan into a barricade near the White House. The incident ended when Carey led police on a high-speed car chase towards the U.S. Capitol. After repeatedly warning Carey to stop and get out of her car, the Capitol Police shot and killed her.

The altercation led to the U.S. Capitol being locked down for a brief period of time after shots rang out near Garfield Circle, in the vicinity of the Hart Senate Office Building.

Carey, who has ties to both Stamford, Conn., and Brooklyn, N.Y., hails from a condominium complex in Stamford called Woodside Green, according to the Register, and was permitted to work as a hygenist in Connecticut prisons, the Post reported.

At least a dozen gunshots were fired when she tried to flee cops, who had trapped her two blocks from the Capitol. She was believed to have been hit several times.

A child believed to be a girl about 2 or 3 years old was found unhurt in her black Infiniti sedan, which had Connecticut license plates.

Authorities had no immediate explanation of the woman’s motive. But Capitol Police chief Kim Dine told reporters there was no reason to believe it was an act of terrorism “or anything other than an isolated incident.”

ABC News said the 34-year-old woman had a history of mental health issues. A task force of FBI and Secret Service agents was executing a search warrant at her Connecticut home, CNN said.

Correct observation Duane , this on the day after the California Authorities give illegal immigrants the right to get driving license. An interesting development to say the least.They are saying that they are giving illegal immigrant some more rights after all there are 38 million of them in California and they are voters .

She hit them a Dukes of Hazard shot there oui.
I like how the US police looks duppy when trying to arrest someone. All those rules leave them powerless, whereas in this country it was corn as she throw back in Drive. Yet they still get the job done over there.
