I spoke to apple csr and they told me that the tmobile version is sim unlocked but the phone is locked to tmobile for 24 months and it can't be used until the period is up

See that there is confusion about whether or not the T-Mobile sold iPhone 5s from Apple.com.

As far as I know Apple (in the US) only starts selling the iPhone unlocked in November, but Apple Canada, UK among other places start selling them in that configuration from day 1 (in this case September 20th).

Apple csrs say one thing but the evidence is quite contrary. There is nothing called sim unlocked yet locked to one carrier. Nothing. Look thru the link I posted above and you will see that Apple does not lock full priced phones bought thru the apple store.

In fact you can buy a full priced AT&T iPhone 5s thru apple and it will be unlocked. People have bought full prices tmobile 5s and immediately used AT&T sims this proving what that csr said as wrong. The csrs in America don't consistently know what they are talking about on this matter.

Honestly I am still not entirely convinced, though the majority opinion is that they are indeed unlocked. The various CSRs between Apple & T-Mobile making conflicting conclusions doesn't help matters. Though the T-Mobile price is the same as the unlocked iPhones have eventually sold for when they are released at $649 USD.

As I know it iPhones are sold in 4 configurations (re: 16GB model)
$099 - 2 year deal (T-Mobile)
$199 - 2 year contract (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint)
$599 - no contract, but locked (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint)
$649 - no contract, unlocked (& apparently now T-Mobile)

Well I ordered the Tmobile full price one but it's by a friend in the US. When I get it here will activate and post pics but that ain't gonna be for another couple weeks at least.

Tmobile CSRs have a mandate to sell contracts plain and simple. It's how the company makes money. I suspect in the US Apple just doesn't mention the words factory unlocked for the initial phase just to pacify carriers trying to lock in as many customers as possible to a contract.

It should be noted that iPhones don't come locked per se from Apple. They lock at activation. This explains why both AT&T and Tmobile 5s iphones (which are exactly the same model) work with either sim when the phone is purchased at full price. Verizon 5s also comes GSM unlocked by law so that is also another safe bet for an unlocked iphone if you do not need to use the CDMA part.

That's right. The 5 I bought last year was from Verizon.

"If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier."

So many better options than lifeproof if only people would use the internet
