There are a lot more options than there was a few years ago.
Audison Bit.One & Bit.Ten
Moconi 6to8
Alpine H800
Rockford Fosgate 360.3
Helix DSP
Arc Audio PS8
Zapco DSP-Z8
Crescendo Music Conductor
And I'm certain this isn't a complete list of what's available.

I've used the Alpine H701 (similar to the H800, but no PC control). It did what I wanted.
The Audison Bit.One - Still my processor of choice, especially with internals upgraded.
Mosconi 6to8 - Interface needs a lot of work.
Crescendo Music Conductor - no graphic EQ. Might be an issue for you.

The Helix DSP is something I'd really like to get my hands on to try.
If price is a concern, then I'd recommend the Helix Unit, otherwise, I still recommend the Bit.One and get it modded. Cheaper than the Audison and, has a nice interface. The downside, only two presets, and no control other than with a PC.

Dont forget
Soundstream and ppi have 8 channel dsp's.
Brax DSP
Arc Audio ps8

All of these DSP's are black boxes so to speak. Your only interface with them is their gui.

The features offered are dependant on the power of the GUI, because what happens inside the black box are sheit loads of advanced maths.

That being said, the Helix GUI, stands miles ahead of the rest.

Download it, and see for yourself.

If yoi can change the head unit pioneer p99 if not then there is a long list of digital processors most listed above by nigell and sully but look for reviews and make sure they have the latest firmware as many first released units had bugs

Been hearing good things about the helix however keep in mind its up to you how much processing you actually require for your needs and not because someone wants to sell you the "best" unit on the market

out of curiosity, would a p99 be overkill for a source unit as opposed to say a 80prs? strictly using either for cd playback, radio etc

both would. at this point, youre purely looking for cd transport.

Well i would go with a HU with a 4 V or more out and maybe bluetooth and whatever bells and whistles u can get if u going with external processor...

Actually at this point wouldn't he be looking for the cleanest source, and whatever other features he wants?

If you're going with an external processor that can handle a digital input, then forget pre-outs. Find a HU that can output a digital signal. (Either by optical or Coax.)
