The ad says $164,950. with 1 year free insurance (special conditions apply). This is the 1.6 GLX model (no sunroof, fogs or rear aero spoiler). I think it comes with 16" rims, rear drum brakes, black door handles, non HID lights and fabric interior. It's not a bad deal for someone looking for a Jap with ok resale value I suppose. Plus I don't really hear about new Lancers getting tief.

^All they did was remove 4 years insurance and probably all the free maintenance so it's the same money anyway.

Yeah. And the GS is supposed to compete with 5series/A6/EClass.

But since the GS is over 900k, it's not really competing.

the same kind of people that buy basic no abs, black door handle and no tachometer corollas for $180k when they get the multimillion dollar govt contract they will buy over priced lexuses for reasons mentioned above. Toyota is simply superior to anything else on the planet...obviously it translates into Lexus on a higher level. TTTL firmly believes Lexus has more quality, reliability, features and downright badassness over any Merc or BMW.

You're not that far off .... since the LS400 debuted the Germans and prolly the rest of the automotive industry have used it as the benchmark for quality fit and finish....there's a reason for the term "Lexus-like". Also BMW/MB/Audi have never outranked Lexus in reliability whether it's IQS or VDS. I'm not a Lexus fan but this is one brand that is fanatical about quality, comfort, reliability and technology and you know Toyota have deep pockets to keep Lexus going this way

I don't dout Lexus is best for fit and finish ... the Ze Germans are far superior with engine, transmission and handling.

I think that's a misconception. The Japs are more than capable in the engineering field and I'll say they can go toe-to-toe with the Euros. The difference is really what market the manufacturers are going for and what their market research says their customers want. The LS460, LS600HL, NSX, LF-A, GTR, IS-F, M45, FX45/50 are all proof that the Japanese can match the Germans .... but that's expected as both countries have a long history in automobile development.

I'm sure if you had a challenge to build a U$100,000 luxury car or sports car both sides will produce some very impressive machinery .... the competition would prolly be a draw

Agreed on the Lexus being reliable, and a great luxury car if you just want a good quiet, comfortable ride. And I personally do like them, but I still think they're overpriced in Trinidad. When I heard they were bringing them to Trinidad I went to the showroom the next day to view and find out prices and was seriously surprised.
I'm sure people will buy them. As mentioned, some people just believe in them, so when they get rich, that's the car they'll go for. But to the general public, I think a GS is a hard sell considering that it starts at 150k more than a fully loaded 3.0T A6.

Agreed ... there's really no way to defend the pricing since Lexus pricing is very competitive with that of the German luxury brands elsewhere .... they have to be since they compete in the same market space. I would really like to hear an explanation as to why it should be different here in TT .... really ... how did Toyota arrive at these ridiculous prices? Any premium the Lexus brand has over the German Big 3 should be minimal at best

Its a very simple explanation ... If you consider a brand to be a luxury brand, then the mark up the dealer places on the vehicle is going to higher than on a non luxury brand. All the dealers in Trinidad do this including dealers for the german luxury brands. Toyota just took this to another level, thinking that we were that dumb.

All of you guys think that they will sell but I seriously disagree, its going to backfire big time! Trinidad's market place has changed alot in the last 15 years thanks to free information and the internet. Treating us like crabs in a barrel doesn't work anymore as the barrel now has windows and doors.

If you have real money for a ride.....people will spend on Porsches, Rovers, jaguars even Audi, Mercedes and BMW. But I seriously can't see them buying a Lexus. If I had money to burn...I would buy a Porsche.

A Porsche wouldn't last nearly as long as a Lexus before having high repair bills for sure though. So as you said, if you had money to burn.

I understand some of the difference comes from the engine size putting them in a different tax bracket, but other than that I can't figure it out.
I think it's just to have them look exclusive on the road. After all, they're doing so well with Toyota sales that they probably don't really need to sell many Lexus models. Who knows.
