Man Killed By A Jet Engine Lacked Medicine, Friend Says

A 31-year-old Roselle man, who apparently committed suicide by jumping into the engine of a British Airways jetliner in Trinidad, had become disoriented after being unable to find medication for a health problem, according to a family friend.
"It was a medical, a health (problem)," said Sonya Kocour, a former neighbor of the man, Daniel J. O`Brien, who died on the Caribbean island while there on vacation. Kocour, of Medinah, said Wednesday afternoon she had just returned from a visit with O`Brien`s parents at their home in Bensenville.
A landscaper who worked in the Roselle area, O`Brien had been staying with a friend at the Belair Hotel, which borders one of the runways at Piarco International Airport just outside Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, according to Bruce McKenzie, the consul at the American Embassy in Trinidad, who said he had been informed of the incident by local police.
The friend with whom O`Brien was vacationing, identified as David Meyer, also from Illinois, was awakened at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday by someone trying to choke him, according to McKenzie.
He said Meyer was knocked down with a lamp, but fought off O`Brien who, unclothed, ran out of the hotel.
McKenzie said O`Brien scaled two fences with barbed wire on top, fought off four security guards and commandeered a four-wheel-drive vehicle, which he drove into a British Airways jet sitting on the runway with its engines running.
"The police told me that he had actually driven off after the crash into the one engine, about 150 meters," said McKenzie. "And that he went back on foot to the airplane."
An airport official said, "Nobody ever thought in his wildest dreams that that was what he was going to do."
