A co worker brought in his BMW 320i by himself from that website. Vehicle cost approximately £10000.00 and was cleared here for approximately $240000.00. Of course car dealers would have a mark up of $100000 and more.

bear in mind the dealership still have to provide warranty and routine check ups, so this incurs a cost which need to be included in their final quote.

There is a place that sells foreign used cars (where the NSX is) a few houses away from "Oddy", the dyno guy in Esperanza Village. Saw a a few Mercs there and he told me that he brought it from England.

Taxes to note when importing a car

there are 3 taxes

Customs Duty.
Customs duty is normally payable at the following rates:
(i) Vehicles with an engine size not exceeding 1599 cubic capacity (cc) - 25%
(ii) Vehicles with an engine size exceeding 1599 cc but not exceeding 2000 cc-35%
(iii) Vehicles with an engine size exceeding 2000 cc but not exceeding 3000 cc-40%
(iv) Vehicles with an engine size exceeding 3000 cc-45%
Customs duty is based on the Cost, Insurance and Freight (C.I.F.) Value of the vehicle
== Cost of car + Shipping cost + Insurance

Motor Vehicles Tax
The following are the rates of Motor Vehicle Taxes:
engine SIZE (cc) M/V Tax ($)
engine size not exceeding 1599 cc 5.00
engine size exceeding 1599 cc but not exceeding 1799 cc 8.00
engine size exceeding 1799 cc but not exceeding 1999 cc 15.00
engine size exceeding 1999 cc but not exceeding 2499 cc 25.00
engine size exceeding 2499 cc but not exceeding 2999 cc 30.00
engine size exceeding 2999 cc but not exceeding 3499 cc 35.00
engine size exceeding 3499 cc 50.00

Example 2.0L 1999 cc x 25 tt

Value Added Tax (VAT)
15%

So I just did some quick calculations.

Audi a5 2.0tdi sline convertible
Cost 10000 gbp

100,000ttd

+8000 shipping

108,000

+Insurance at 2%

110,160

+35% cif

148,716

+Mvt @15/cc

178,701

+Vat @15%

205,506.15

How much does registration cost on top of this?

^_^ good info there, I thinks that's a pretty good average only the MVT should be @ 25/cc instead though

Silly question here...can you buy, import and legally register a personal car with a diesel engine and have it on 'P' plates?

I thought because of the subsidy on diesel you were unable to do so.

It may be different for registered dealers

Dealers are allowed to bring them in. It has nothing to do with P or T registration, individuals can't import diesel vehicles. For what reason I have no idea :| Guess it's so that people buy vehicles from the stealerships.
