Why though? Why certain brands don't offer diesel variants of their popular CUVs/SUVs locally?

diesel has a stigma attached as "noisy smelly vehicles"
plus diesel SUV's tend to sell like hotcakes in the uk and australia so being bottom of the food chain we dont get them, hence why it took so long for the diesel tucson/sportages to reach here

good question: I don't think we'll see much of this in the near future with the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming hike in diesel price. Perhaps after the 2013 budget we may see some more options but as some may agree the market is changing rapidly.

Mazda is at a disadvantage here again since the CX5 which is already a local market failure with a cost close to an Audi SUV. Imagine if SS were to import the diesel version, it may be high $400's. Similarly the SGV is priced higher than the Korean twins, imagine the diesel version. Who would buy a high 300k diesel GV? Not much people since sales slowed down on those SUV's due mainly because of dated looks. The RAV4 and CRV top spec models will make the CX5 blush imagine if they threw in the diesel versions here too. Who would buy it? Expect the Santa Fe, Sorento and Captiva to re-solidify their position in the diesel SUV market. The BMW X1 and X3 are good premium choices as well.

True, i guess the pricing will be crazy. The captiva is a nice SUV though, price ain't too bad either.

scotty_buttons, i agree X3 = oooogleyy

Diesel Q5 > all

But diesel cars should be an option, there are the VW polos,Yaris diesels, swift SZ3 diesels etc making 60+ mpg. Even if diesel prices were to raise, the fuel mileage could buffer the cost. The diesel accent is rated at 50mpg, which is much better than gas vehicles in the price range.

Nah problem is that most euro specced clean diesels use ultra low sulphur diesel... Our diesel is high sulphur diesels, it wont screw up the engine per say .... but it will screw up the diesel particulate filter which is not a cheap item to change regularly. For VW group car the DPF can cost upwards of 1200 pounds (12000 tt).
Trini diesel is brown in color ... diesel in UK and Europe is pink

The clean diesel engines are amazing with low emissions, really high fuel economy and pretty quick of the get go. Even if the price of diesel runs as high as the price of premium then it would still be worth it.

They can get about 60 to 75 miles to a gallon ... which is way better than your average petrol engine 35 to 45 in the same class.

Thats why diesel engines is so well loved in europe.

My guess is the Jaguar prices are not current. The S-type was discontinued to my knowledge and the Jag prices have been there for quite some time.

I always wondered what the price of a Jaguar XJ would be in Trinidad, do we have any on our shores?

what value proposition does the hilux bring to the table with a fully equipped price of $325k? With the new Ranger, BT-50, Colorado and D-Max on the market, the competition just got better.

I have a question? Why do we have to STILL pay premium prices to get the best safety features that are intended to save lives, that is standard equipment in other countries. I'm referring to:

 Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
 Brake Assist
 Traction Control
 Dual Front, Side and Curtain Airbags (06)
 Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
 Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM)
 Factory Installed Keyless Entry with Burglar Alarm
 Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC)

We have all these accidents weekly, of which many have been fatal. We often blame (and rightfully so); DUI, cell use, fatigue, etc. But what about the car itself? Why are we STILL getting 2 airbags, disc/drum for example?

Example: These days with EVERYBODY switching lanes and darting in/out without signalling, I'm glad that I have side AND curtain airbags. But I had to pay a premium price to get the premium model to get these 'luxury' features. WHY???

$237 for the GL FWD Tucson, yet all you get are 2 airbags, ABS (w/o EBD) and Side-impact door beams. WHY??? You actually have to install an after-market alarm to achieve remote central locking. NO coded key! WHY???

All FWD SUVs (and cars) should at least come with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Traction Control as standard. I'd like to see 6 airbags too, but that will NEVER happen.

Will be always continue to be a 'lo spec' society?

Any thoughts on this??? I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.

Blame the market buyers? Dealers bring what the market will buy essentially. Consumers aren't asking for these features. And by not asking i mean not walking away from vehicles missing these features. If as a dealer I can sell a vehicle easily with two airbags why will I ask or tell the manufacturer to send vehicles with six?

I wish I could chime in on what current cars look like good buys and what not but I haven't been to dealers in months. Maybe april.

i rather a vehicle with a full compliment of safety features. I dont need back-up camera, reverse sensors, sunroof, leather seats, heated seats why?, power seats, 10+ speakers, hid lights etc..

Sadly we are all spoilt by the Mitsubishi Lancer concept. Fully loaded = fog lights, flair kit, spoiler and sunroof but 2 airbags and front disc/rear drum abs brakes! As Allergic say, why hassle the manufacturer to pack more stuff in the car and raise price when the current lowspec version meeting THEIR gp expectations?

I totally agree with your comments and points. Do you know that the features outlines here are standard in the American market yet we are made to "pay for this" as "additions". But what are we to do ? As sad as it is - this is the market we exist in and while you and I may decide to hold our grounds and not buy, a couple thousands gonna accept these sub-standards. Its a vicious cycle.

I actually got some information recently that one of the local dealers decide to do with out certain safety features in low end models because the price of insurance skyrockets.

Cars loaded with 6 and 8 airbags are significantly more expensive to repair if the airbags deploy.

Not confirming... just relaying the info.

you guys seem to forget that we're not a first world country; it's okay though, ever so often I make the same mistake
In several developed countries, these safety features are standard because of government mandates to have them on all new vehicles. I remember while I was in the U.S. the legislation was passed to ensure that new passenger vehicles be fitted with stability control; before that, it was an option :)
No dealership is going to bring in their entry level vehicles with those safety features just because they love and care about us :? Even if they did, you know we'll see a price increase to go with it
On a personal note though, other than the airbags, I've really never had any use for most of that laundry list of supplemental safety acronyms *shrugs*
