Tourist Attacked During Carnival Celebrations.

Today, the T&T Guardian publishes a series of photographs of a robbery at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Carnival Tuesday afternoon.

Most of the photos were sent to us by a Guardian reader, who wishes to remain anonymous for reasons of personal safety. Two were taken by Guardian photographer Edison Boodoosingh. The T&T Guardian passed on the photos to the Port-of-Spain Criminal Investigations Department. ASP Ajith Persad promised that investigations would commence immediately.

The robbery occurred around 3.40 pm while Legacy was crossing the Savannah stage. They show a large group of young men first violently robbing two people who appear to be tourists, and then just as violently attacking one of Legacy’s security guards when he tried to intervene.

The eyewitness who recounted the incident to us said, “It was a shameful display by our security forces, who responded so slowly as to be almost guilty of being accomplices. There was absolutely no response from the Grand Stand security. The police were called multiple times by the band’s music truck, and only towards the end of the episode did three officers start sauntering toward the scene.

“If there was any type of police response, they could have easily cordoned off the Grand Stand area and easily apprehended the gang, who were in the centre of the secured area. The episode lasted at least three minutes, which was more than sufficient time for a police response.

“Some gang members were actually able to change clothing, and one went off the scene chipping with a girl, while others impersonated the average bystander, walking, jumping and enjoying the Carnival scene.

“During the robbery episode, the music trucks continued playing and masqueraders continued grinding down. “It was a truly shameful episode for our country, not to mention the trauma for the couple who was robbed, with the woman trying in vain to defend her companion while he was beaten by an entire gang of men, with his head bleeding.”

Steups, and it happen in a crowd of people and no one could have thought to help the poor guy out. I think this is the most worrying thing as persons sit back and just let the criminals do as they wish.

Steups, if we hung a good few of them things might start to get better. If they get caught, the state will just waste money to house and feed them in jail. Crime in this country is becoming ridiculous and it's high time the government did something to effectively curtail it.

thinking about this type of behaviour is vexing to the core,
seriously how can an entire sub sector of our population, think that its ok to behave like this,
if this was a country where things really really bad, where "nothing nah gyan for de yutes them", and "de dawg them hungry",
i can understand how ppl may resort to this type of behaviour,
but this is trini, things dog cheap, cost of living ridiculously low compared to other places in the Caribbean and so called first world countries, we have free education, to many social programs to name,

how do we as a society still manage to produce not just individuals but entire groups of persons with such a warped concept of entitlement, groups that display blatant disregard for the basic rights of other ppl, and show no remorse after doing so?

If anyone does checks with the various health centres and hospitals across trinidad around carnival...the number of rape cases and rape kits given out is alarming...

Also persons being treated for stab, chop and gunshot wounds especially on jouvert morning is mind blowing. Yet the police claim carnival is safe with "minor" incidents.

Now we know what minor means.

This is why the NCC is asking for somewhere remote to hold carnival celebrations, make every man jack pay to enter and watch how quick these guntas will become extinct and segregated from the law-abiding civilized society.
