@ phreak

You own a Mac mini? Asking because I'm thinking of getting one very soon but my intention would have been to run it on a 27-32" screen. Might up the RAM to 8GB or just take it stock. It's like you said, an alternative to a regular desktop.

Think there will be any issues?

Yeah, got a mini, 21.5" iMac and the 27.. If you using it as a desktop replacement you'll have no worries.. Don't even think of doing any kind of final cut stuff on it or any kind of rendering though..

phreak wrote:Realistically the Mac mini is cool for low to mid range processing, I've always found the it to be abit low on performance.. I mean it was structured to be a low to mid range desktop alternative.. Also the hardware video card makes a difference when you throw stuff at it..
As such pro to Mac mini, cost.. Con - missing hardware video card..
Pro to iMac 27, performance.. Con - cost..
My 2 cents anyways..
the current specs seem fairly capable though

the Mac Mini
2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
16GB memory
1TB hard drive1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
US$1099

add that to a 27" IPS thunderbolt Apple display for $999 and a keyboard and mouse and you are now getting the price of a Intel Core i5 iMac 27"

I think though that the i7 on the mac mini is mobile while the i5 on the iMac is desktop.

Yeah, the mini packs a mean little punch.. Correct the i5 and i7 on the iMac are desktop processors whilst the Mac mini is m and qm processors.. Additionally of course is the nvidia hardware video card starting at the 640m to the 680mx with the integrated intel 4000 on the iMac..

Minis are very decent systems non the less..

Later..

Anyone else jailbroke their devices?

^^ I was waiting to see if FaceTime & iMessage activation issue was fixed with 6.1 release before I move from 5.1

Did you have any problems?

no problems on my end it actually adds your cell phone number to your macbook / mac facetime + imessage instead of only the emails !!

no problems at all wrt activations, I never had that with my personal devices. Only weather.app is broken but they're gonna push a fix via cydia soon.

This jailbreak was by far the easiest!

So i was able to activate my iMessage and FaceTime with my apple ID. Not sure if the 6.1 update was the fix. However, trinidad wasn't in any region. Oh well once it working :-)

What do you ladies do when your MacBook pro starts to act up. Lemme tell yall what going on with mine

For one, since day one it doesn't work in rooms without air-conditioning (im not even joking) my gf has the cold and the A/C off and I attempted to use it just now and it froze on me, waited 30 mins before I long press the ON.OFF switch and started it back.

2- When it did in fact start back, the sound was off, had to restart again

3- When I started it again, for the first 45 mins of it being up again it was moving dead slow, safari was randomly closing and the beachball kept poping up

4- Facetime STILL not working and apparently it never will unless I downgrade.

5- Force Quit doesn't want to work unless all the apps are working fine which kind of defeats the purpose of Force Quit anyway, which is why I had to hard restart because I was unable to force quit the apps that made it freeze in the first place.

I can only write this now because I turn on the A/C ... if I turn it back off this machine would overheat again and freeze again.

That sounds like a motherboard issue

But I could be wrong..

Had a similar issue with an iMac about two years ago.. It was days away from end of warranty so I extended it.. After weeks of testing it turned out to be an array of sensors that was faulty.. First thing is check your warranty..

Got it for christmas in 2011, it's running Mountain Lion and yes the fan is running but it's not much help seeing that if I touch the bottom of the laptop i would get 2nd degree burns.

Before Mountain Lion my MacBook was:

-Reliable
-Never Froze
-Facetime Worked
-Never overheated
-Safari never randomly crashed
-Battery life was more than double what it is now
-The sound didn't decide when it wanted to work

Got a friend who also had the same issues (not as bad as me) and he put in his original CD and went back to what he had before Mountain Fail came along and all his problems gone. I thought I needed more ram in here but then I remembered that he has TWICE the amount of ram that I do, so that was out of the question. Thing is some of the Apps that I'm used to now, doesn't work with anything prior to Mountain Lion like Keynote and Numbers but it looks like I may have to look for alternatives soon because this entire OS is trash.

A quick google for each of my problems shows me that I'm not the only one with these issues and it seems to be isolated ONLY to OSX Mountain Lion, the most common problem is the Facetime issue, saw an apple forum with literally thousands of people with the facetime issue and getting no answers from apple, since September last year so I guessing if Apple refuse to acknowledge that Mountain Lion is flawed it's best I downgrade

Ok, read of quite a few cases where users have issues when upgraded.. I actually had some minor issues when I upgraded one of my systems, nonetheless I just did a complete wipe and reload since then that solved the minor issues..

Regarding the heating issue, I've seen this in one or five cases.. If you willing you can break down your mbp and clean and re-apply some thermal compound on the processor and gpu..

Of course if you have apple care warranty by all means make use of it..

Sorry dude..

I hear you dude, try tackling it software first, a simple backup, wipe and reload.. Then go from there..

I upgraded a MacBook Air to Mountain Lion about a month ago and having no problems - in fact I think Mountain Lion is a fantastic OS. This is my first personal Mac so the iOS similarity makes it a great experience.
