The reviews are what I expected, no real bass in the lowest octave, slightly muddy, and good for music in a small room mostly.

^ yes of course. The back of the receiver has RCA low level for "Zone 2 out"

you can use that to run to the powered speakers.

That is actually the better option since for un-powered speakers you would have to give up your 2 surround back channels and use 5.1 instead of 7.1 and the receiver will convert those two channels to Zone 2 instead of sending surround back audio to it.

if you have powered speakers then you can just hook up your ipod to it directly, no need for the second zone and running all that wiring outside

if you do plan on using zone 2 for this you will need to get a RF remote cause then to adjust the volume or do anything you will have to keep going into your living room or HT room to point the remote at the receiver and/or player.

if your music library is shared then you can play it from your phone directly and forget the MBP entirely

however if you want to control the volume using Remote App, then you will have to turn the volume high on the receiver and then control it on the Remote App since the remote app can't control the receiver.

then again if you're doing all of that then what's the need for the receiver and zone 2?

Yup serious. But not speaker B either.

Zone 2 is meant to be used in another room like the kitchen or dining room or patio. You can listen to some music in your kitchen or patio while the kids watch a movie in the HT room. Zone 2 uses a different source input.

Speaker B is for Dolby Pro Logic IIz, where you can add small front speakers (left and right) high up (ideally where the ceiling meets the wall) above your main front speakers to give the front stage more height. Thus the z in IIz, as in the Z axis. Works great for special effects where things fly over your head or helicopters fly over etc.

I see speaker B is selectable so perhaps Zone 2 uses that instead of taking up 2 channels from your 7.1 as non IIz receivers usually do for a second zone. However using it for zone 2 means you will have to give up the height effect channels.

If you want the same content inside and outside you can just simply use a wireless transmitter to send the same signal to the powered speakers outside.

only have a 5.1 setup so no need for the 7.1 sound. found these in the manual:

[C] 7.1 channel surround system & Speaker B connection

•Speaker System setting: Speaker B

With these connections you can simultaneously enjoy 5.1-channel surround sound in the main zone with stereo playback of the same sound on the B speakers. The same connections also allow for 7.1-channel surround sound in the main zone when not using the B speakers.

Speaker B setup
You can listen to stereo playback in another room.

1 Connect a pair of speakers to the front height speaker terminals.

2 Select ‘Speaker B’ from the Speaker System menu.

• SP->AB – Sound is output from A-speaker terminal (up to 5 channels, depending on the source), the two speakers in B-speaker terminal, and the subwoofer. The sound from B-speaker terminal will be the same as the sound from A-speaker terminal (multichannel sources will be downmixed to 2 channels).

so this is basically saying i can set the receiver to send the same sound from the main room to another location using the speaker B setup, no?

that was my next question. is the receiver powerful enough to power the 5.1 system as well as one of those speaker boxes?

^ check this article
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/articl ... -logic-iiz

" I didn't hear the height cues I expected. Nothing in particular seemed to come from the height speakers-just occasional ambient sounds and a bit of music. In fact, it didn't add what I'd call ambience. Instead, it sounded as if I'd swapped out the little Sunfires for a hulking tower speaker system. I'd describe the sound as taller, not higher.

A few measurements showed me just how subtle the effect is. Even when the height channels are running at their peak, their output is typically about 20 decibels lower than that of the main channels.

This result held up with other action movies. The more action, the more kick-ass the soundtrack, the more exciting PLIIz made things. However, in most dramas and comedies, PLIIz does very little except during moments when the music swells. Certain scenes, like the opening of Ratatouille in which a light rain falls, really come alive in PLIIz. Most scenes don't."

And apparently it does nothing when listening to stereo content like music since PLIIz works on Pro logic for movies, not music - so you will get no difference when listening to music unless the actual audio file or disc is in surround sound.

cool story bro?

Ps. I decided to hold off on buying the Oppo BDP 103 :(

I need to see the quality difference before I spend US$500 on a bluray player when I already have a PS3.
